24.01.2022 Hi, this is Simon Martin, counsellor and psychotherapist. This is the Facebook page for my central Sydney based private practice, SLM Counselling. I think of counselling as a collaborative process between client and counsellor, in which we are fellow travellers on a journey to overcome the aspects of your life which challenge you or hold you back. Whether it is grief, anxiety, drug or alcohol use, relationship challenges or a general feeling that you are struggling or stuck, ...counselling can help by harnessing your inner resources to clear these hurdles. For more information about me and what I do, take the link to my website. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to help you assess if you think we will gel in this very important relationship, that of client and counsellor. For you to benefit, our alliance must be strong, you must trust me and feel understood by me. Take a look at my website now, then go ahead and get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.

13.01.2022 An important part of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is developing the capacity to enter into the experience of the present moment. This is a great TED Talk in which the speaker explains the experience of the present moment in a very engaging way. His use of the juggling balls is both skilled & enlightening! In ACT, Mindfulness is worked towards without the need for a committed Meditation practice. That said, if you choose to meditate, you will certainly be more Mindful! https://www.ted.com//andy_puddicombe_all_it_takes_is_10_mi

12.01.2022 Oh well, apparently we need to cut our teenagers some slack (ALL THE WAY into their mid-20s!)....

08.01.2022 In recent weeks, I’ve found myself sharing with new clients some suggestions to help them get the most out of the process that we are embarking on together. As it happens, I wrote a blog post a couple of years ago on just this topic. So here, as a timely reminder, are: 6 Tips to Help You Make the Most of Your Counselling.. Read through to the end, because the most significant ones come last!... I’d be really happy to get a conversation going about any of them. So, please leave your comments See more

07.01.2022 BEATING ANXIETY (on SBS Insight) Have you ever experienced a rising sense of panic? Have you ever been plagued by negative thoughts that left you feeling hopeless about the future? Or...have you ever watched on as someone you love seemed to withdraw from life, but felt helpless to assist them? ANXIETY could well be at the heart of each of these experiences. The road to recovery for anyone who suffers from anxiety - and this is a surprisingly large percentage of the population... - begins with an understanding of what it is and how it comes about. Watching the recent SBS Insight program, BEATING ANXIETY, would be a great start for anyone who has suffered from anxiety, or has watched on as someone they care about suffered. In this 50-minute program, Jennie Brockie moderates a lively and informative conversation with a studio audience made up of a range of people who have suffered with and recovered from anxiety, as well as mental health professionals who have supported them. They speak from a range of experiences with the onset, progress of, and recovery from the condition. Some have used medication to kick start their recovery along with talking therapy, while others have relied on the talking therapy (counselling) alone. There is an interesting comparison of views between clients and professionals who advocate the use of traditional Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and the newer Mindfulness-based, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Both are well represented. Interestingly, in the audience is Stephen Hayes, one of the academics who founded ACT in the late 1990s. He shares the story of his own experience of anxiety. As an advocate of the benefits of ACT, I am happy to discuss its use as the basis for psychotherapeutic work with anyone interested to find out more about it. Feel free to contact me using the details on the Facebook page for my Surry Hills counselling practice, SLM Counselling. #Insight #BeatingAnxiety #SBS #ACT #CBT #CBTvACT #anxiety #panic #counselling #psychotherapy #StephenHayes #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy Check out the program here (you might need to create a login): https://www.sbs.com.au//1351060547/insight-beating-anxiety

05.01.2022 Well, it’s Monday morning and the working week has recommenced. I wonder who woke up in the night worrying about the challenges of the week ahead? I wonder who is already feeling stressed or anxious about matters that need to be addressed this week? Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) trains us in ways to change our relationship to difficult internal, personal experiences (negative thoughts, feelings, sensations, urges) so that we are not ruled by them, and we can get on ...with the things that truly matter to us. Part of this work involves the development of Mindfulness skills. We can look at Mindfulness from various angles. Part of Mindfulness is about fully entering the experience of the present moment. This can be grounding when we are inclined to be ruminating over the past or worrying about the future. Here, as a reminder about this aspect of mindfulness is a blog I wrote a couple of years back about what your dog can teach you about Mindfulness! Enjoy. https://www.slmcounselling.com.au//What-your-dog-can-teach

02.01.2022 This is a really instructive animation explaining several of the salient aspects of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), my preferred mode of work.
