20.01.2022 Sustainability is a big, messy concept, but is fundamentally about the ability to sustain something indefinitely, in the context of finite natural resources or human settlements and wellbeing. The way I see it, the fashion revolution has 2 key goals: One is around environmental sustainability - shifting to operating within natural boundaries, consuming less resources and creating less waste and pollution.... The other goal is around human wellbeing and equity, around eliminating human exploitation across fashion supply chains, switching to a system that doesn’t rely on poverty to facilitate the production and encourage the consumption of cheap fast fashion, that values the skills and lives of all who work within it. The hard thing is, very often, these two goals appear to be in conflict. While halting all consumption would be amazing for the planet, it would destroy communities who’ve come to rely on the fashion system (thanks to trade agreements and the veritable forcing of many communities and countries to take on fashion production at the expense of traditional industries, meaning they are now beholden to the whims and desires of the West and the wealthy). There are no simple solutions to complex problems. We need to see change at industry, government and community levels, which is why shifting our own consumption patterns is just one part of the picture. Voting is another, along with writing to brands to let them know you care, and taking every opportunity you can to use your voice and your $ consciously, for good. * * * #equity #equalityforall #socialdeterminantsofhealth #ethicalfashion #ethicalclothing #ethicalstyle #sustainablelifestyles #inclusivefeminism #zerowastehome #foodwaste #organiclifestyle #quoteoftheweek #quoteoftheday #bekindalways #spreadkindness #30wearschallenege #sustainablestyle #ethicalfashionblogger #adelaide #adelaidebusiness #madeinsouthafrica #ichoosesa #fashionrevolution #fashrev #sustainablefashion #sdgs

19.01.2022 This is a very important PSA: I just received 5 pairs of the most epic shorts EVER and they're online now! My fave thing about them (apart from the fact that they're ethically made in Melbourne from GOTS certified organic cotton)? They're flared, which means they aren't fitted/tight on my voluptuous thighs. Curvy girl win! ... https://slowclothes.com.au/collections/new-arrivals

19.01.2022 Well, that escalated quickly. Happily, I'm still able to post your orders daily! Just as happily, I've scheduled some super duper excellently excellent lives to break up your days in case you're stuck at home.... Join me LIVE on Instagram Friday and Saturday midday (Adelaide time) for some (possibly surprising) goodness. Annnnd... if you have any suggestions for our lives for next week, please let me know! So far i'm planning interviews with some incredibly slow fashion designers, but I'm here to make YOU happy, so let me know your slow fashion wants and needs!

19.01.2022 Have you watched David Attenborough’s latest doco #alifeonourplanet yet? Woah - mind blasting!! (my fave phrase brought to me from my husband and his Hinglish.) A sober tale of destruction. An incredible tale of hope and power. Get on it lady!... If you’ve seen it, what stuck in your mind or heart most strongly?!

18.01.2022 Beautiful humans, It is time for a pause. For family. For nature. To celebrate and commiserate. To regain resilience and strength and find hope for a new year. To realise how lucky we are. And to redefine our role in creating a better world. Hopes and dreams over goals for me this year. A real centering and redefining of self and purpose. Beyond fires and covid, this year brought challenges that have been so public and so personal, so all-encompassing, so global and so local,... it’s been hard to process. I’m sure many of you have experienced similar this year. Hugs!!! And yet, more than ever, the last 12 months have exposed (my) privilege alongside society’s fault lines. Revolution like wildfires after a lightning storm. We have all learnt, and many have had to suffer for this learning. The empaths among us may feel things even more. It’s a hard slog. And on a fashion note, this year people have connected with global supply chains more than ever, the butterfly effects of our actions more visible than ever before. We are all human and all lives are/should be seen as equally valuable. Anyhoo, wow... that went on tangents I hadn’t planned. But I’m too pooped for editing. Have a goodie. Hug your people. Eat allllll the food. I’ll be quiet on here for a bit, solar-charging my batteries. All orders will be posted 4th Jan. Love ya big time xx

16.01.2022 Our much loved multi-ethical-brand boutique is having our last ever Adelaide pop-up, with so many incredible local and international sustainable brands on SALE. It's THIS SUNDAY at Gang on Gilbert St, and there are still some (free) tickets left - we just ask you to reserve a time for C-word reasons! https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/adelaide-ethical-fashion-1- See you there for a jolly good lot of shopping fun, coffee and gift-sorting.... Kari xx

15.01.2022 Our biggest sale ever is now live. Nearly everything reduced as we move into a new cycle for Slowclothes, focused on education and mentoring. https://slowclothes.com.au/collections

15.01.2022 I adored this quote when I first heard it on @davidattenborough new film. And I love its essence. Especially in the slow fashion space, we are inherently partnering with and drawing from nature. But then I read this incredible post (and I’m sorry I can’t remember or credit the source) about Indigenous Australian vs non-Indigenous perspectives on environmental protection - that Indigenous communities see nature as part of themselves, themselves it, and so to help or restore or... protect one is to help or protect or restore the other. In contrast, Western perspectives see nature as something separate from ourselves that we can dominate, can be ‘at one with’, or ‘restore’ as an entity separate from our own being. And from that perspective, nature isn’t an ally. It is us. It is me and you. We are nature. And I realised, this is what I too believe. What I was raised to believe. And that is why I don’t see work in the sustainability space as ‘doing good’. I’m not a good person (well, at least not solely because of the work I do). It’s just doing what feels and is right and natural and soul quenching. What is your relationship with nature? What does it mean to you?

13.01.2022 Our last pop-up is THIS SUNDAY. Have you reserved your time? I've been preparing all the beautiful pieces and I can tell you, we have the most gorgeous collection of styles and labels for you from so many incredible brands. Just touching all the fabrics is making me so happy! I've also secured one last delivery from Seaside Tones, so some of your favourite styles will be restocked!... The 10am spot is full but we have spaces available in later sessions - you must reserve a time though (C-word, you know...). Also, it is with sadness I have to let you know we aren't able to run our wreath workshop anymore. But in GOOD NEWS, Mrs Sippy will be there, at least for the first half of the day, making delicious coffee. So that's a BIG WIN! See you Sunday my loves xx Free tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/adelaide-ethical-fashion-1-

13.01.2022 It’s Sunday. Some (free) tickets left! Much amazing slow fashion to be had at epic prices. ... See you there?! Link in (insta) bio xx

09.01.2022 How many times have you tried to tell someone about the significant harms caused by the fashion industry, only to be met with, oh I’m not into fashion...?! I can tell you, it’s happened to me A LOT. And this has become my standard response.... The fashion industry employs approximately 1 in 8 of all employed humans in the world (say what?!). It’s a serious polluter, employer and user of resources. It reflects and perpetuates our values and norms. This IS NOT a frivolous outfit conversation. My latest blog post on nudism and why EVERYONE is responsible for their part in the global fashion industry is up now xx

07.01.2022 Happy Diwali! Best thing about being in a mixed culture family (apart from all the other best things) is definitely getting to celebrate sooo many festivals! #happydiwali

07.01.2022 My loves, I have some news. ... how to start... I’m not from a biz family. I’m from a family of environmentalists and actors and teachers. Getting into this startup world has been sooo unfamiliar and such a learning experience.... It has also been one of the most fulfilling and community building experiences of my life. The connections and true friendships built have blown my mind and filled my cup. Early this year, I hit the GST threshold. This was a massive achievement for me - it meant my turnover was higher than I’d dreamed for my little biz. My accountant, despite us still being in debt for the biz, said I was doing amazingly. It felt great. Even so, post fires I was pretty flat. Because, you know... fires and the planet and all that. And then Covid. What you haven’t seen much of this year were my intense battles with anxiety, after my day-job work/ PhD went viral, and the intense efforts required to manage all that. Anyhoo, fast forward (with lots of details missing) and it’s come time for our family to make the call to close the retail aspect of Slowclothes. And I’m actually feeling good about it. My primary aim is to support independent ethical makers, to educate and spread awareness. And I want to keep doing that without the logistics of managing a stockroom and all the logistics stuff that takes up so much time. So... Slowclothes isn’t ending, but our retail side will be winding up. This will be a gradual process over the next few months, but to begin the transition, I’ll be hosting one last event in real life for my Adelaide gals on Dec 6th. Pop it in your diaries! I have so much more to say, but the first massive thank yous (of many)... To the designers who have trusted me to share their art - it’s been beyond an honour. I’m not just saying that. I feel so privileged. And I will be working with you all to work out how I can support you moving forward. Everyone who has come on this journey - every single order has quite honestly meant so so so much! I’ve been honoured you’ve believed in the mission enough to spend your $ with me. More to come .... xx * * *

04.01.2022 { m a k i n g w i t h n a t u r e } As part of our upcoming (in just 2 weeks!) final in-person sale event, the incredible Phoebe Hunter will be running a wreath making workshop. Dried flowers last years and create beautiful sculptures and intricate movement. They lift a space and hold a wonderful calming presence.... The event is child friendly.
