25.01.2022 And this is its neighbour! Both doing well in the dry

22.01.2022 Slow Food Saddleback has had a very busy and rewarding year, with monthly events and workshops, culminating in the Terra Madre lunch in early December. With the end of the year upon us it is time to think about the Slow Food principles of Good, Clean and Fair Food for all and how this can be achieved. The International organisation is working in many countries, especially where even the most basic food production is a struggle, to lead communities into healthier lifestyles.... Our local farmers are also struggling with the drought and the change that the climate is making to their production methods to keep growing our beautiful food and support their animal husbandry for our benefit. So shop at the Farmers Markets, eat locally and enjoy all the benefits we have in our local area. A very happy and safe New Year to all and Slow Food Saddleback will begin its activities with a Bring and Share picnic early in February. And of course bring on the rain!!

20.01.2022 Terra Madre Day 2019 was a wonderful celebration, with over 100 guests celebrating food that is Good, Clean and Fair. Hosting an excellent lunch for so many people takes a lot of planning, effort and coordination. Thank you to the Slow Food Saddleback members who contributed generously by growing produce, making cakes, butter and appetisers, and by constructing each course with help from Luke Basic from Silica Bar and Restaurant in Kiama and Karina Shepherd from Dandelion a...nd Mallow in Gerringong Slow Food Saddleback wants to recognise the host of wonderful local suppliers for making Terra Madre 2019 such a success, they helped us to reduce food miles in the production of our celebration meal. Thank you to: Nick Dunster, talented tuna fisherman Buena Vista Farm for a selection of specially grown vegetables, chevre and pate Schottlanders for the contribution of succulent wagyu beef Phycohealth for local seaweed which featured in our table butter Strong Organics for exceptional potatoes Camilleri Berries for wonderful carrots and capsicum Berrylicious for succulent strawberries The Valley Cheesemakers for the stunning ‘cheesecake’ creation featuring The Pines cheddars, Unicorn brie, Buena Vista chevre and local artisans chicco blue. Our guest speaker, Mahlah Grey, from The Pines in Kiama presented the Pines story and reported on her recent trip to Slow Cheese in Italy supported by the Slow Food group. Help support local producers and reduce the number of miles our food has to travel by buying within your area.

20.01.2022 Margaret Fulton was a Scottish-born Australian food and cooking writer, journalist, author and commentator. The Margaret Fulton Cookbook was published in 1968 and became an instant success. Many more successful books followed and many households grew up celebrating with birthday cakes from her renowned Children’s Birthday Cake Book. Sadly, Margaret passed away this year. Last weekend we honoured the inspiration she added to tables across Australia at our Terra Madre cele...bration, with our Ode to Margaret Fulton. Our cake reveal featured cakes made by our Slow Food members many inspired by Margaret’s recipes. Her books still inspire today with basic cooking and festive treats to try.

15.01.2022 Seaweed is one of the lesser known items of produce on the South Coast. It is harvested from the coastline and produced by PhycoHealth into a range of products, including pasta, skincare, corn chips, granola snacks and more. Full of nutritional goodness, it is an excellent addition to any meal. Last weekend we added powdered seaweed to logs of home-made butter as part of our Terra Madre celebrations.

13.01.2022 Making the family tradition of sweet ice cream to go with the traditional plum pudding yummy!

10.01.2022 Stone fruit have burst into season with glorious sweet juiciness. Keep an eye out at your local producers for imperfect fruit. Bruised stone fruit is often sweeter, softer and cheaper than perfect fruit - ideal for stewing and making into pies
