25.01.2022 Off the loom, washed and dried....I'm happy with this one! I need to twist the fringe and then it will be done, and onto the next thing!
25.01.2022 Its nearly that time of year again, the sheep are woolly, the grass is green......looking forward to fresh fleece to spin!
25.01.2022 Blocking Sunday for me......and using up some of the wool I bought in Bendigo. Only the white shawl is from Slow Merino wool, but it is the nicest one of the three......
24.01.2022 Much to my surprise Slow Merino is approaching 300 likes!!! Time for a give-away I think.....a choice of 100g of machine processed superfine, 50g of hand-processed yearling (weaner) wool, 500g of raw fleece or one skein of spun DK weight undyed superfine.....who will it be??
24.01.2022 Slow Merino is going on a tour....France, Italy and the UK....looking for the most interesting fibre and craft, so its not likely I'll have any wool for sale from this year's shearing. I'll post any remarkable finds on my way!
21.01.2022 I've been looking through some posts about weaving tradition and heritage....Would it be impossible to start a locally-grown, locally-made 'tradition' here? We've always been an export country, making bulk commodities for the world, at the expense of locally made goods....and buying in (largely) cheap products of slave labour ($3 tee-shirts....really?). Aren't we smarter than that?
20.01.2022 Progress, using some mushroom dyed spin. This was a beautiful purple mushroom from Bessiebelle (part of the Budj Bim IPA)
20.01.2022 Here it is, off the loom, fulled and dried. It contracted to about a third of the width and length, but its not felted, just springy and the threads are still mobile. Next time I will not do the twill with such long floats (3 ends), and avoid the twinned ends as well. But, for all that, its very soft and floaty, close to what I was aiming for!
20.01.2022 Had a great day yesterday at the Cavendish red gum festival! Three lovely ladies now own Slow Merino scarves, hand crafted from super fine merino wool, I was sad to part with them but they've gone to good homes!
20.01.2022 Through the windscreen, car full of kids, moving the wethers down Casanova Rd to a fresh paddock.....Gough the dog doing quite well
18.01.2022 More woolly vistations, in Lyon and Parma. It seems that the Italian wool is kept in bags (makes it difficult to fondle), this might be the last of my wool-shop-crawl....its been quite productive, and puts us in touch with local people of the nicest kind!
17.01.2022 It's been a long time since I posted, a year in UK, bushfires and covid, and covid again, but lambs make me smile
16.01.2022 First post from France....in the shadow of Sacre Coeur cathedral there is a wool shop! All natural fibres, and all made in France, so of course now I am the owner of some yarn made from Camel, and some yarn made from Yak. They had Merino and Alpaca as well, but I couldn't justify that!
14.01.2022 Here's a video on the latest research about the therapeutic benefits of superfine wool!
14.01.2022 Getting very near the end! Managed to maintain tension reasonably well this time......can't wait to see what it turns out like!
14.01.2022 This article on the synthetic dyeing industry makes me think I should keep investigating the natural ones! https://unityoutfitters.com/toxic-colors-synthetically-dye/
14.01.2022 Its time to slow down fast fashion and think about how we recycle clothes.
12.01.2022 My aim with our wool has to be to make a fine and floaty wrap or scarf. Well, knitting such a thing takes months, so I'm trying a very open weave (with a patterned twill), and we will see how it turns out! The first bit I tried was beaten way too tightly, so I had to cut my losses (literally!) and try again....we'll see how this one goes! Two ply warp (for strength) and single weft.
10.01.2022 What a lovely evening we've had! Found a wool shop open this morning, and in conversation with the proprietor we found out there was a knit-and-natter this evening in a local Glacerie (sweets café). When we turned up they were most welcoming, and we had a delightful hour and a half knitting and nattering in Frenglish (me English, Anth French). A shot of the beautiful shop, and some of my purchases here and in Paris.
08.01.2022 New warp dressing the (New for me) 4-shaft loom....and so it starts!
08.01.2022 Good morning all, as well as some glorious super-soft fibre, I have some natural dye-kits for sale on my etsy site www.etsystudio.com/shop/SlowMerinoSuperfine/. If you want to try out natural dyeing but don't know what to use I have done all the hard work for you.......dye kits consist of ground natural dye-stuff (leaves, seeds and/or bark) and mordants, just add water and fibre, yarn or cloth...natural of course. An adventure in every kit!
07.01.2022 Wool does it naturally! Grow it, make it, wear it, then let it go.....it returns to the natural mineral cycle and fertilizes the future. Love Wool!
07.01.2022 Perry Tart, sorry its taken so long, but your raw, superfine wool is on its way to you....might take 3 weeks to USA, but I'm assured it will get there eventually! Best wishes from Slow Merino!
06.01.2022 Slow merino is approaching 400 likes!! The lucky 400th will receive a hand-spun, natural dyed ball (c. 100g) of slow merino superfine!
04.01.2022 And biodegradable....
04.01.2022 Such good advice regarding what we wear, and how impacts can be reduced!
03.01.2022 Dyeing with Ironbark bark...handspun from about 19 micron BWM tops.....dipped the skeins into the slow-cooker overnight.
03.01.2022 Fancy living in a place where colour, art and design were part of what people did every day! Aubusson, France, home of the tapestry from the 15th century. Loving the colours and varieties of yarn, the skill and creativity. The museum is amazing.
03.01.2022 I was so happy to get a warping board for Christmas....thank you dear man! I've had some hand-spun waiting for a special scarf for a while, so I got busy and used my new toy.
01.01.2022 Oh dear, got sidetracked on the way home from Numurkah doing swamp surveys..........how could I resist such inspiration?
