23.01.2022 This morning we were at Man-O-War steps in Sydney Harbour with Police Minister David Elliot and the Senior Officers from other Emergency Services, urging them public to get Ready for Summer and to exercise caution when recreating by the water. Already, this season has been extremely busy, and we’d like to remind people to be aware of their limitations, always follow the directions of lifesavers and lifeguards, and most importantly, always swim between the Red and Yellow flag...s. 22.01.2022 Seasons Greetings & Thank You from SLSS Director of Lifesaving and Education Matt Spooner Team Lifesaving, I'd like to extend to you best wishes for the upcoming Festive Season. 2020 has been a year like no other, and I am pleased to say that our team, through each of you, has risen to challenge after challenge, and delivered beyond expectation for our membership and the public who visit our coastline. From Bushfire deployments at the start of the year, to a very different ...patrolling season at the hand of COVID, each challenge our team has faced has been met with professionalism, resilience and determination. Please take this time to recharge the batteries and spend time with your loved ones. My sincere thanks goes to all of our lifesavers who will be on patrol over this period, especially those who are involved in our summer operation, and on patrol over our busy holiday season. Best wishes, and see you all in 2021!

22.01.2022 #slsaaoe Shout out to Doug Hawkins Coogee SLSC who is a finalist for the SLSA Awards of Excellence this coming weekend. All the best to you Doug. In addition, Doug delivered six community education sessions to over 200 people/students on beach safety. Putting his training expertise towards the development of the Garie Vanguard Project, enabled Garie to increase its active membership by 30%. Doug’s holistic approach is to teach and encourage people to become Surf Lifesavers, this results in skilled patrolling members making the beach a safer place.

22.01.2022 This week in our celebration of #40YearsOfWomen we would like to recognise and share the journey of Karon Lekeu from Clovelly Surf Lifesaving Club. For Many of our members joining the movement is a family affair - such can be said for Karon who joined Clovelly with her husband and two daughters. It didn’t take long for Karon to take on key roles within the club from Age managers roles to Patrol captain and club management. ... Most notably, Karon led Clovelly SLSC as its President between 2016-2019. It is a pleasure to be able to recognise Karon’s commitment to her club and local community. #40YearsOfWomen Read more about Karon and her achievements http://surflifesavingsydney.com.au//Karon-Lekeu-Profile.pdf

21.01.2022 #ROM Congratulations to Wanda Surf Life Saving Club member Lachlan Crawford who has been recognised as the Branch monthly winner Rescue of the Month for December. Lachlan successfuly rescued 2 near drowning swimmers off track 15 at Wanda Beach on 27 December 2020 at approximately 3.43 pm. Lachlan was not on patrol at the time but was going for a body surf when he spotted the 2 POIs in trouble. Lachlans' efforts to respond immediately to rescue these people certainly prove...d a positive outcome. Assistance was also aided by members of Elouera SLSC roving patrol, RWC operator Kane Hughes and Cameron Pyett and Jon Hayman Sutherand Shire Lifeguards. A great effort by all involved. A nomination for this month was also recieved from North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club for 9 year old Maxwell Hawkins who performed a rescue at 1.30 pm on this same day north of North Cronulla whilst he was out paddling his board. 18.01.2022 #SLSAAOE Congratulations Bronte Surf Life Saving Club on your recognition of Meritorious Award with Bronze insert. Group Certificate of Merit with Bronze Insert... Bronte SLSC At 7:30 pm on Saturday 1st February 2020, Bronte Club Captain James McLennan and his wife Kirsty, a fellow lifesaver, spotted a group of distressed swimmers being swept out to sea in the Bronte Express, a notorious rip at the South end of the beach. James immediately called for backup through the Clubs What’s App group and arranged for police and ambulance to attend. James and Kirsty grabbed rescue boards and paddled out to the distressed group. Conditions were very difficult with a strong north easterly wind blowing and very choppy conditions making paddling difficult. James brough 5 patients to his board while other Club members who had arrived on scene attended to other swimmers. The initial objective was to get the swimmers away from the rip and reef so that an orderly rescue of all the swimmers could be carried out. It was necessary to triage the rescue as one of the swimmers had swallowed a lot of water and presented in a semi-conscious state with pink foam coming from his mouth. This patient’s mouth was cleared and James paddled the now unresponsive person back to the beach where he was attended to by paramedics. All swimmers were successfully brought back to the beach.

17.01.2022 Continuing to celebrate #40yearsofwomen we look towards Maroubra SLSC and to Simone Golik in particular. After attending an open day at Maroubra, where Simone was made to feel welcome and at ease, she joined the club. There was a little bit of resistance by some at the club towards women, however the club became very progressive and accepting very quickly. This is testament to Simone having the honour of becoming Maroubra’s first Patrol Captain in 1999. Simone is very proud of having performed 20 years at 100% patrol efficiency. 15.01.2022 Shout out to North Bondi SLSC who are finalists for this weekends SLSA Awards of Excellence which will be live streamed from 5.30 pm of the SLSA facebook page. Innovation of the Year Australian Defence Force (ADF) Pilot Bronze Medallion Course North Bondi, NSW... Former North Bondi President Mark Cotter became aware of the issues ADF members faced transitioning from service to civilian life. Seeking advice from Vet Sports Australia and commissioned Officers at Victoria Barracks, the ADF Pilot Bronze Course was conceived. Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators from North Bondi and Bronte collaborated to focus on identifying participants existing skill sets and emergency response techniques. The course was fast tracked as a result and participants quickly became rescue ready for the beach environment. The impact of the program has been extremely positive for each of the candidates, creating a sense of camaraderie and new networks outside of the ADF. It is envisaged this initiative will help suicide prevention within the veteran community by providing the missing link some ADF members face when leaving the service. See more

15.01.2022 Our Surf Lifesavers are currently patrolling beaches across the Sydney coastline from North Bondi to the Royal National Park. Visit www.Beachsafe.org.au for live beach information, including information on COVIDSafe related closures. Whilst our lifesavers are happy to get into the water during the peak of a heatwave, they don’t want to get in for rescues that could be prevented! Remember to always swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled locations during patrol hours. Alcohol and drugs are not compatible with swimming, boating or any recreational water activity! Here’s a shot of our lifesavers working with Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force to recover an overturned boat this morning after persons were rescued by lifesavers.

13.01.2022 It is with regret that we confirm the Tradies Wanda One Club SLSC Carnival incorporating Rd2 of the Summer of Surf Series is not proceeding this weekend. 09.01.2022 This afternoon, Rescue Water Craft SS2 came across a yacht collision near Merries Reef, just off Greenhills Beach. The 34 foot yacht was rounding a mark when it was hit by another vessel. A male was struck in the back by the bow of another vessel, and as a result sustained suspected spinal injuries, and was unable to move off the boat. 07.01.2022 Today in celebrating #40YearsOfWomen we focus our attention on Sarah Davis from North Bondi SLSC. What an amazing Brit to take on the challenge of the Australian coastline from pebbles to sand, ripples to waves, and not to mention adapting to the eclectic culture of surf life saving! Sarah gained her bronze, then went on to be a Trainer, Assistant Education Director, Club Vice Captain, Competition Director and attained her Gold Medallion. For everything Sarah has gained from Surf Life Saving she has contributed back one hundred fold, and believes The more you put in, the more you get back. 07.01.2022 #TRAINHARDWORKHARD Sunday’s Search Operation for a presumed missing kayaker had a lot of similarities to the ‘Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX)’ conducted only a month earlier at the same location with many of the same responding resources being involved yet again. The search operation ran somewhat seamlessly in unfavourable conditions thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteer teams. Fortunately, it was a good result. These SAREX’s will be part of an ongoing r...oadshow across each district within the branch throughout the season. Randwick held the innaugral exercise, so keep posted for your districts turn! These are some photos from our real search operation last Sunday.

07.01.2022 #SLSAAOE Shout out to Noah Steiner Wanda Surf Life Saving Club finalist SLSA Youth Athlete of the Year. Good Luck Noah for this weekend. Noah Steiner Wanda SLSC, New South Wales... Noah achieved first places in a number of events including U17 Iron at both NSW State and Interbranch Championships. Noah participates in a range of coaching and water safety engagements with the Nipper program at Wanda. As a former Nipper Club Captain, State and Australian Champion, Noah understand the importance and merits of encouraging, mentoring and influencing juniors to develop a love of lifesaving and competition.

06.01.2022 Today we turn our attention to Garie Surf Life Saving Club and member Patricia Dillon especially. Pat joined the movement in the early 80's and has (although she may not have realised it) played an important role in leading the way for female members after her. Pat has been a leader at Garie SLSC through various roles such as Deputy President and other managerial positions. Most importantly she has led through her attitude of being able to "... roll up your sleeves and work... part of a team". Something that has no doubt played large part in some of the clubs most recent accolades such SLSS Club of The Year. Pat's recognition marks the coverage of our three National Park Surf Clubs as part of our #40yearsofwomen celebrations. As such we say thank you to the many members of these clubs not profiled but have no doubt played their own role in the development of women in our movement.

06.01.2022 Surf Life Saving Sydney was extremely proud to hold its first Women’s RWC Development Day, allowing these fine women to work and train together to serve their communities. Well done Nixy Krite and Andrew McKellar for running such a successful and sought after inaugural program! We really do run a world class Rescue Water Craft Operation in Sydney Branch!

05.01.2022 Congratulations once again to Bronte Surf Life Saving Club for the deserving recognition of the heroic rescues conducted 1 February 2020.

05.01.2022 This afternoon, Coogee, Bronte and Clovelly SLSC’s, Surf Rescue 30, Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter & Duty Officers attended Gordon’s Bay in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs with NSW Police & Randwick City Council Lifeguards after a Kayak washed ashore, and was reported to 000 by a member of the public, sparking a search for a possible missing person. A large and complex sea and aerial search operation commenced in the area, using IRBs, Rescue Water Craft, an Offshore Rescue Boat and Helicopter. Thankfully, Surf Life Saving Duty Officers were able to locate the kayak owner with the help of SLS members via social media. The owner was safe and well, after believing the kayak sunk earlier in the day.

04.01.2022 #SLSAAOE Congratulations to Elly Miller née Graf Elouera SLSC who has been inducted into the SLSA Hall of Fame Elly Miller, Elouera SLSC, NSW Sport... Over a period of nine years between 2006 and 2015 Elly won a total of 13 Australian Championship Gold Medals in beach events, including 10 individual Gold Medals, plus 6 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. In 2008 Elly was named the Most Outstanding Female Competitor of the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. Elly’s record at both a State and Australian level is one to be envied. What is not obvious with her record is the difficulty of maintaining a consistent level of success as both a Beach Sprinter and also a Beach Flag competitor, a feat that has not been matched by many others. Elly has had an outstanding career at the highest level of SLSA sport competition and is well-regarded by her peers for her professionalism and willingness to help others.

04.01.2022 #ROM Congratulations to Coogee SLSC who have been recognised as the Branch ROM winner for November. The Coogee IRB team were conducting IRB training while the Coogee bronze squad were also active and preparing for their final assessment. At approximately 6.50 am a member of the public approached the beach team to advise that they thought a boat might have overturned near Wedding Cake Island approximately 700 m offshore. The beach team instructed the IRB team comprising Brie ...Turner, Matt Serhon to approach the vessel and investigate. Upon arrival the Coogee IRB found a fishing vessel which had capsized with 2 males perched on its upturned hull. The IRB team safely extracted and rescued both men, one of whom had a dislocated shoulder and safetly returned them to shore. The victim with the dislocation was in severe discomfort and once returned safely to shore Coogee member Alexandra Scott administered oxygen therapy and patient care until safely handed over to Ambulance and Police on scene.
