24.01.2022 An apt reminder from @consciouslyeco to learn about what can and can't be recycled in your local council area. When in doubt, check it out! It frustrates me when people make a blanket statement about what can and can’t be recycled. Because it totally depends on who collects your waste and where they take it!!! .... That said, the following information comes from the Hunter Resource Recovery (HRR) website and is therefore only applicable to residents in the Cessnock, Singleton, Maitland & Lake Macquarie local government areas. . I’ve heard people say items need to be larger than a credit card to be recycled - this is FALSE - HRR accepts items as small as bread tags and bottle caps. . I’ve heard people say pizza boxes can’t be recycled - this is FALSE - HRR accepts pizza boxes. . I’ve heard people say you need to rinse items before putting them in the recycle bin - this is FALSE - HRR requires food items to be finished but not rinsed. . Do some research on what is accepted in your curb side collection bin. You might be surprised by what you learn. Here are the 7 items that surprised me! . 1 Baking dishes and pans (steel and aluminium) saucepans, and frying pans (not electric) . 2 Books (hard and soft cover, including dictionaries/encyclopaedias, telephone and picture books) . 3 Plastic drinking straws (not that we use these but still good to know ) . 4 Gift bags, cards, and wrapping paper - I’ve often heard that wrapping paper can not go in the recycling bin so am happy to see this in the list! . 5 Pizza boxes - these cause so much confusion! I usually tear the box in half so that I can put the clean lid in the recycle bin and the greasy bottom in the green waste bin) . 6 Plastic cutlery . 7 Tupperware See more

19.01.2022 Looking to offload furniture that you no longer want or need? If your items are still in good condition, consider selling them on sites like Gumtree, or Facebook Marketplace or social sharing groups. Charity stores, second hand furniture shops and antique stores are also great places to donate and often upcycle, recycle and reuse materials so, likewise, if you're in the market for some new furniture items check out your local thrift stores. #smallactsbigchange #itallcomesbacktoyou

16.01.2022 Do you feel like your food scraps are filling your general bin? Switch putting your daily food scraps to good use and start a compost or worm farm instead.
