25.01.2022 Meet the team involved with small. so far. - Thanks to Xav Lane for his crafty videography!

24.01.2022 This puppy can accommodate 2 families. By removing all internal doors, we force the occupants to access all the rooms externally. This reduces wasted interior space while encouraging engagement with the outdoors. Specifically designed for a weekend getaway/retreat. . 23.01.2022 Our prototype at night. We were heavily influenced by Louis Kahn's Esherick house when designing our fireplace. (The chimney/ vertical strip on the right side of the building) Khan was inspired by American settler homes the same way we find inspiration from industrial buildings in Victoria. The idea behind this was to create a narrow window that travels all the way up to a sky light. So when you're sitting in the lounge room by the fireplace, your eyes can follow the smoke ou...tside, provoking a sense of camping. We'll post some more photos of this design detail once we finish styling the interior. . . . . . .. #esherickhouse #louiskhan #industrialarchitecture #australianarchitecture #smallhouse #archdaily #chimneydesign #fireplace #Hamilton #inspiration See more

23.01.2022 This cladding is cypress. Milled from trees commonly used as wind breaks on agricultural land. It would normally be pushed in a pile and burned but a local legend Josh (the Jackal) Rendell milled it up. We now have 2 ton of stored carbon hanging off the side of our building. As it greys off it will resemble a house of twigs, twisting and bowing beautifully against the copper. Heavily influenced by Peter Zumthor's studio we think its roughness suits our agricultural setting. ... . . . . #peterzumthor #cypresscladding #copper #farmerwantsawife #recycled #carbonneutralby2020 #smallhouse #archdaily #offgrid @ Port Fairy, Victoria

18.01.2022 The first 3 photos are from our bedroom. We chose to position these windows at a height that encourages movement within the space. So as you approach, the windows are situated below eye height forcing your eyes down towards the river. By framing the view, a visual relationship is established between the room and its surroundings. We can choose to position openings in a range of different ways separating landscapes, revealing unnoticed elements or heightening your appreciation... for what’s normally considered ordinary. Richard Leplastrier is an enormous influence of ours. His architecture challenges us to connect with nature in a way rarely done in Australia. If you havn’t already, check out the documentary ‘framing the view’ on ABC Iview. It changes the way you think about a house. PS the windows will be cleaned before the professional photography. https://iview.abc.net.au//richard-leplastrier-framing-the- . . . . . . . #framingtheview #Richardleplastrier #architecturedetails #domestictravel #views #archdaily #australianarchitecture #smallhouse #abciview @ Port Fairy, Victoria

17.01.2022 I was looking through some of the footage taken on our day of transport and thought I better collate it and slap some beautiful music over the top. It’s a little teaser before the professional content gets dropped by Mitchell Withers. Thanks Madeleine Peters and Xavier Lean for all the beautiful filming. A huge thanks goes to Scott Kinnealy for getting it there! Here’s his number 0407 765 377 if you wanna give him a pat on the back. Thanks to Jimbob for building the road. Mur...ray Adams for designing and building the mechanics that lifted the roof. Metalpro Engineering for getting us out of a few binds. Aaron’s dad Mick Shields for solving most of the day's technical issues and finally the Commander-in-Chief, Aaron (The Cini ball) Shields. Without him this would have been a nightmare. We’re really blessed to have so much talent in the South-West. Cheers! See more

11.01.2022 We’ve laid these bluestone beauties throughout the bathroom and kitchen. They act as a nice little thermal mass soaking up all the heat from the morning sun and slowly releasing it during the day. Bamstone have turned these ‘off-cuts’ into a useable product where they cut them all into small squares and throw them into a giant washing machine. This rounds off the edges making it easy to pile into crates. We use these because they’re a bi-product and they’re local. Too often we see shmansy homes in Toorak being littered in Italian Marble but it’s just an enormous waste of energy. Critical regionalism is important to us here at Small. because Architecture should resemble the place it’s in.

03.01.2022 Our new house. This design is formed around a young couple that have relocated to rural Victoria. They needed a dwelling that reflected their desire for quality of space rather than quantity. If their priorities change or shift in the future, so can the building. We believe traditional housing models are inadequate for this generation. So we seek to provide a viable alternative.
