25.01.2022 We are very pleased and excited to announce that the 2021 student design competition ‘small home BIG LIFE’ is now open for registrations. The competition aims to promote the small house trend and is open to all full and part time students studying Building Design, Architecture and Interior Design at Victorian TAFEs and Universities. 25.01.2022 BREAKING VERY EXCITING NEWS!!!! An important change to the planning rules in Victoria to allow permanent secondary dwellings in backyards via a fast tract VicSmart planning process. It will be rolled out as a pilot scheme in the first instance - if you are the Local Government Areas of Murrindindi, Moreland, Greater Bendigo and Kingston you may now be able to build a small (60m2 or less) permanent home in your backyard and the occupants will not necessarily have to be dependa...nts - you can rent it out, live in it yourself or put a family member in it. This is sensible planning change that I have been lobbying hard for for many years. All those people who I have spoken to over the years who would like to build a Small Change home in their backyard and who happen to be in those areas please make contact. 25.01.2022 Another benefit to building small is that construction moves quickly on site when your building a 70m2 home! The Warburton project in collaboration with @greenstruct_pl is a customised Quark Small which has a 45 degree pitch roof, stick built. Even at frame stage the sense of volume relative to the footprint is unmistakable. Our trademark vaulted ceilings are 5 metres high at the ridge so your small home feels so much bigger than it is. 24.01.2022 Everyone knows we love a gable roof line with a high pitch and vaulted ceilings, so were seeing a soul mate in @davey.mceathron.architecture work on this gorgeous Accessory Dwelling Unit (we call them granny flats or secondary dwellings) in Austin, Texas. Apart from the very satisfying + comforting housey shape of a gable, the potential volume available if the ceiling follows the roof line transforms what could be an ordinary + small space into something really quite special. 24.01.2022 Another writers studio is inspiring us today. This little beauty is just 37m2 and has a gorgeous combo of earthy materials including a timber floor made from reclaimed whiskey barrels! 21.01.2022 RUNNER UP - of the XXS Home category for the 2020 Small home BIG LIFE design competition goes to Jefry Tanjaya, an architecture student from Monash University Art Design & Architecture Judges agreed that the design showcased many innovative ideas for storage in a small space, including changes in floor levels. It also made clever use of roof space for outdoor living. The renders were also very impressive and amazingly high quality. Congratulations to Jefry for all your effort in your design. 21.01.2022 Another fabulous book by @catherine_foster for those looking for inspiration on the way to a small home. The 20 small homes featured in this book are beautifully photographed with detailed descriptions, fact files and floor plans. Sizes range from 34m2 up to 100m2 . While the book showcases New Zealand, (just to fuel our ongoing kiwi envy) it’s not difficult to imagine all of these small abodes in an Australian context. Happy dreaming!

15.01.2022 For those of us still dealing with covid restrictions, it’s nice to daydream about getting far, far away from all things covid and politics. Whilst we won’t be travelling to Joshua Tree National Park in the California desert, USA, anytime soon, we can admire wistfully this gorgeous pair of Corten/weathered steel clad off grid structures, known as Folly, set up for glamping in serious style. Designed + built by @cohesion.studio, the larger structure contains kitchen, dining and bathroom while the smaller pavilion is storage with an outdoor deck and sleeping area above for perfect night sky stargazing. We love everything about Folly @follycollection and congratulate @alqadi.malek and @hillary_f for providing such great inspiration for small home fans who are stuck at home! 15.01.2022 A chilly Friday inspiration via @dwellmagazine This gorgeous holiday home by @_naturehumaine architects is a great example of a stylish + compact family holiday home. Its not small by our Small Change standards but at 116 sqm it shows how clever and thoughtful design that is beautifully detailed can work in a space about half the size of a typical Australian family home. We think the clever use of simple materials, the white-on- white colour palette and dramatic soaring ceilings make this little home a very special space for a winter escape! @raphael_thibodeau

14.01.2022 WINNER - of the Small Family Home category from the Small home BIG LIFE design competition goes to Steve Pettitt, from Swinburne University. The judges agreed that Steves design included a very well considered plan, a good connection to landscape, excellent orientation and the reverse brick veneer worked well for the passive solar design. 13.01.2022 A successful collaboration with @LG buildersaust Read below what a happy client has to say about their small change home! Repost from @josiefrancesryder ... House update: We're in. A few years ago, I told Brendon of my dream of a little house in the country. Somewhere with space to grow veggies. I longed so deeply to be more in touch with the seasons, to swap the sound of morning traffic for birdsong, to step out at night and see a full starry sky. I said with house prices what they were, I didn't believe we would ever own a home. Brendon being Brendon, he set out to prove me wrong. He found @smallchangedesign who specialised in small, efficient, affordable builds, and soon we were out looking for land. It was not an easy dream to chase. We both worked stressful jobs that made us sad so we could save our deposit, which meant long days and a lot less time together. We cried on our honeymoon when the bank pulled out at the last minute, saying they didn't want to fund our off-grid "hippy house". Brendon spent several tense months calling what felt like every lender in the country to find someone who would give us a chance. Then when the build was about mid-way, COVID hit and I lost my job. We had to make a rushed move in with my parents so we could continue to cover the mortgage. But we made it, and it's better than I ever could have imagined. We could not have done this alone. Thanks so much to my parents for taking us in these last months and providing endless support and encouragement. Thanks to our friends who put up with our stress and told us to hang in there. Cant wait til we can see you all again. Thanks to Sally @smallchangedesign for the incredible design, it is just so stunning. Thanks to Sally @vision.sydney who helped us get the loan. Thanks to @lgbuildersaust for building us a beautiful, quality house in the middle of a pandemic. Our house stands on the land of the Dja Dja Wurrung people. 10.01.2022 Love this peaceful meditation cottage. This 14sqm off grid, pre-fab retreat is known as kynttilä, meaning candle in Finnish. The extraordinary volume created by the steep gable roof provides an almost temple like atmosphere in which to admire the surrounding forest in eastern Finland.
