20.01.2022 I have never liked the use of individual performance indicators tied to financial rewards as a motivation technique for employees. Carrots, if you like. Our preference has always been for team goals and rewards. Such rewards are usually combined with punishments, or sticks, to deter abberant behaviour. Before you start typing your outraged response, I offer the recent Banking Royal Commission as Exhibit A in evidence. Abberant behaviour was firmly tied to individual performan...ce indicators. In my previous life, I worked in companies where I saw supposed team members almost come to blows over cost allocations that would affect performance bonuses. Seems that it's not just me who thinks like this. In fact, studies have shown that the carrot and stick methodology of reward and punishment can actually diminish performance in teams! In Daniel Pink’s award-winning book on motivation Drive, he outlines a handful of reasons as to why rewards and punishments don’t tend to work in motivating the modern workforce.
