25.01.2022 Its been 5 years today since Mel passed, that is painful to say the least. She was failed by the mental health system that couldnt understand her. She didnt match the textbook. She was well groomed, she spoke well and clear, she wasnt running around scaring the other hospital patients. So she must not be that bad, she doesnt need to be here, she can go home. She silently suffered and put on a brave face, how familiar is this story lately? What the inquest taught us, whi...ch STILL hasnt been concluded, is that if you really are in trouble and are seeking help, dont assume anything. Dont assume the emergency department has read the notes from your GP who sent you there in an ambulance, or the notes from the ambulance that said you were highly suicidal. The communication failed so magnificently for Mel, it is almost unbelievable. Tell all the medical staff yourself, repeat it as many times as you have to, scream it, make as much of a fuss as possible. Then they should take you seriously. Small Things has given our family so much comfort, to know her book and art is cherished and used as a resource to help others. It has helped us move forward with our lives to know her life was meaningful and she has made more of an impact than most, during that short 31 years. Thank you to everyone who has purchased a book, helping to create her legacy. We cant thank you enough for seeing the value in her art form and supporting it.
