Full trip details below, see you soon

25.01.2022 What covers more than two thirds of the earth's surface area? Our oceans! The school theme for National Science Week 2020 is Deep Blue: Innovations for the Future of Our Oceans. We're excited for this year’s theme as it encourages students to discover the many efforts within Australia that are contributing to marine science, improvement of marine health, discovering new technologies and innovations. Happy Science Week! Teachers - why not get all science-y with your students on our biology camp? :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuWdM9dJddA

24.01.2022 SUSTAINABILITY TIPS FROM SMALL WORLD: If you like George Clooney (yes, we do too) then perhaps you have found yourself with a Nespresso machine...and a pile of plastic coffee pods that you don't want to put in a landfill. Good news! Terracycle will accept and recycle coffee pods of many different brands. It's FREE! https://thenewdaily.com.au//08/25/george-clooney-nespresso/ https://www.terracycle.com/e/brigades/nespresso-b2b-brigade

24.01.2022 Water Quality - such an important subject and linked to many sections of syllabus, teachers ask us how we can include activities to engage and teach your students about current projects and their outcomes. Bioreactors are strategically-positioned trenches filled with woodchips that work by converting excess dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in groundwater into nitrogen gas. Proven internationally but untested in the unique landscape conditions of the Wet Tropics, they are one of a series of treatment initiatives being trialled to reduce nutrient, sediment and pesticide loads flowing to the Reef. 23.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day. Many of us are certified in physical first aid, but what about MENTAL HEALTH first aid? Yes, there is such a certification! It helps us understand signs that people in our world are not mentally healthy, and how to help. We happen to love Thrive at Work's MHFA course (taught all over Australia, but local MH hero Mark Schmitt is Cairns' superstar!) https://www.thriveatwork.org.au//employee-mental-health-t/

20.01.2022 THANK YOU!! Lot 24 protected forever! For each school that travels to the Daintree Rainforest with us we donate on their behalf to help protect a section of rainforest . Recently a vitally biodiverse and precious property in the Cape Kimberley Wildlife Corridor became the latest piece of the protection puzzle. Without continuous donations Rainforest Rescue could not achieve all the wins for nature that they do, so to each school that has contributed simply by booking their educational trip with us - Thanks from all the rainforest creatures

19.01.2022 Why does the reef rely on mangroves? Filtration and sediment capture - corals do not like muddy water, the root systems of mangroves stabilise the coast line, as well as catch sediment coming from the rivers before it goes into the sea. The Barron and Trinity catchments both flow into the Cairns Harbour and Trinity Inlet which you can see in the video, agricultural and urban developments are the main land users in both catchments. The mangrove habitats along the inlet are vital for assisting with better water quality on the Great Barrier Reef. Ask us how we can include engaging mangrove activities and service projects for your student group trip.

18.01.2022 Today marks Schools Tree Day and sadly for the first time in 25 years there won't be any community tree planting events, however we are still celebrating and this years theme is regeneration. Tree planting is the more common term used to explain artificial regeneration, and regeneration is key to sustainable forestry. Small World students planted a total of 546 trees last year alone while participating in our educational adventures!

18.01.2022 SUSTAINABILITY TIPS FROM SMALL WORLD: Did you know that "sustainability" is all about supporting the planet AND people? Sustainable businesses are profitable and "eco-friendly" but they also support their communities. At Small World Journeys, we think one way to help the community is by showcasing and supporting our Traditional Owners and their culture. We are proud that every set trip we offer includes a talk or activity with a local Traditional Owner. And for student groups who want to learn even more, we have our Aboriginal Culture Discovery! Contact us to take this trip or we can design a custom one. https://www.smallworldjourneys.com.au/aboriginal-culture-discovery/

14.01.2022 Check out this local Queensland charity called Ocean Crusaders who are on a 'Caps Crusade' to collect bottle caps from across SE Queensland and turn them into Crab Pot Floats with the vision to replace polystyrene versions that litter waterways. This is a great example of the sort of innovative projects that Small World Journeys love to get behind, share this with anyone you know who could support the cause, could do with some crab pot floats that are not polystyrene, or who just might be interested in a story about local NFP organisations using local businesses for a fantastic initiative! Well done Ocean Crusaders!

10.01.2022 A make you smile story! Volunteers and organisations giving back to community and the environment, these positive result stories make us want to dance under our disco ball (watch this space for near future dance shenanigans). Small World can arrange for student groups to participate in service projects such as tree planting and many others, ask us how to include one in your next trip with us!

09.01.2022 Plastic Free July - Be Part of the Solution! How are you contributingwant some tips? Fruit & Veg - there are plastic free alternatives when buying, and you don’t need to put your fresh produce into plastic bags, you are going to wash them anyway before eating so no need for the bags. Takeaway drink cups - BYO cup...simple! Keep one in your bag and/or in your car, need a trendy one? We have SWJ cups and would love to get one to you if you send us a great story of your plastic free July adventure! And always remember the three R's for a better planet - Reduce Reuse Recycle Thanks Sally for modelling our SWJ reusable cup and bag

09.01.2022 3 minutes of baby goats in pyjamas (you're welcome)

08.01.2022 Just another Small World working from home update... Kelly our Admin & Operations Coordinator is supervised daily by Brian, he tells us that Kelly talks to the headless mannequin beside her desk more than she does to him and that he deserves more treats because of this. Brian also appears randomly in zoom videos and entertains us all with his antics, thanks Brian! Got an enquiry? Small World are still working and Kelly and Brian look forward to receiving your email - if the response email asks for more treats please disregard and try sending again!

07.01.2022 Are you as excited for today as we are?? #worldseaturtleday2020 #savetheseaturtles

04.01.2022 SUSTAINABILITY TIPS FROM SMALL WORLD: Small World Journeys collects our SOFT PLASTIC waste (1st photo) for recycling--and you can too! Most Coles and Woolies have a REDCYCLE collection bin (2nd photo) for soft plastics like bread bags, frozen food bags, snack wrappers, ziplocks..just about ALL "squishy" plastics. The collected plastic is returned to RED Group’s facility for initial processing, then delivered to Victorian manufacturer Replas where it undergoes a transformation. Replas uses the material as the resource to produce a huge range of recycled-plastic products, from fitness circuits to sturdy outdoor furniture, bollards, signage and other cool stuff. If we all sorted/recycled our hard AND soft plastics and composted our food scraps (totally do-able!), would would be left in the bin?

04.01.2022 We love teaching young people the value and fun of community service! Last Friday we welcomed the kids of Machans Beach State School to the Small World office to make a meal for the homeless and hungry, and also make comfort packs for Queensland Health. QLD Health then distributes our packs to people who have come from remote communities to get emergency care, and sometimes they come only with the clothes on their backs. This was a fun day for all, and a great way for these kids to give back.

03.01.2022 Animals warm our hearts <3

03.01.2022 Who recognises Libby?? Not only is she Small World's Marine Biologist Guide (and friend of jellyfish), she is also this weeks Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef featured expert!! Jump over to their page and comment with your questions about her friends (yes she loves and talks to them all) on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and Libby will answer all your weird and wonderful queries via video on Saturday.
