23.01.2022 How to reduce your risk of an ATO Audit. Gday one and all. You may, or may not, be aware that around a third of Registered Tax Agents have not paid their own tax debts, or lodged all their own returns (possibly because of all the hassles they get from the ATO, TPB, ASIC and their Institutes, all of whom seem to want them to pay more fees for yet more education!...Continue reading
23.01.2022 Will the ATO be cancelling your ABN? And, if they do, what will you do about it? Your Australian Business Number is a gateway to many processes and interactions with the various levels of Government in Australia, and is essential to being seen as a credible supplier to clients. Without it, you appear small and could well miss out on significant business opportunities. The Government is encouraging the ATO to cancel what they deem to be inactive ABNs.... How will this affect you? Many small business owners have multiple businesses and will switch between business streams as activity dictates. For example, we have one client who has three businesses (two companies, one sole-trader), and an investment in a 4th, and will focus on where the activity is, sometimes leaving one or more of the units in abeyance for years at a time until the next surge in demand in the relevant sector. If you are wondering about the implications this may have for you, then call your local office of the Smarter Advisory & Accounting network today and have an obligation free chat. Were 21st century accountants and advisors, cloud focused, and your local office could probably come to you for that chat! Contact us to discuss how we can help. 14.01.2022 New business streams added by Smarter Advisory & Accounting The market is constantly changing, and in recognition of this we have added two new business streams to our portfolio. Since commencement we have offered a pathway to establishing your own public practice accounting firm and becoming a Registered Tax Agent.... A number of existing members have indicated to us that they do not want to undertake the additional study involved to satisfy the Tax Practitioners Board, but would rather simply build a public accounting practice operating under supervision. And a significant number of enquiries have been received from candidates who can only meet the education criteria for Registered BAS Agent, not Registered Tax Agent. We have listened. Commencing 2019 we are now offering: Pathway #1 Build your business and transition to Registered Tax Agent Pathway #2 Build your business working under supervision. Pathway #3 - Build your business and transition to Registered BAS Agent Many aspects of the two new streams are similar to those of the existing stream, but there are significant differences. 13.01.2022 How the Governments of Australia could make all our lives so much easier and unleash an innovation revolution. There are times when someone with common sense states the glaringly obvious and gets fulsome praise from the ordinary man in the street but is totally ignored by the politicians in Canberra and the State & Territory capitals. This article from the Accountants Daily, about the pre-Budget submission by the Tax Institute is an excellent example. Amazing common sense t...Continue reading

06.01.2022 How will the slowdown in China affect your business? What can you do to insulate yourself? There have been many, many warnings over the past few years about the unsustainable debt carried by Chinese local authorities and industry, created by the central governments demand for infrastructure & manufacturing capacity construction. We are also seeing the beginnings of the impact of Mao Tse Tungs one-child policy on the demographics of their workforce. And now theres Preside...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Seven ways you didnt know your accountant could help you Most, if not all, business owners will need the help of an accountant. 03.01.2022 How to deal with the ATO crackdown on e-commerce. Gday one and all. Do you have clients in the e-commerce space? Given that many retailers & wholesalers are now selling on line as well as via shopfronts and warehouses, the point could be moot.... For all of you in this sector, please be aware of the extent and focus of the ATO and other statutory authorities. In the past two years the ATO has audited and interacted with enterprises in this space and collected in excess of $1bn of back taxes, and has another $580m on payment plan. Have they contacted you yet? Or are they already in contact and you and your current accountant are struggling with dealing with the situation? Contact us to discuss how we can help. Web: https://www.smarteraa.com.au/smarter-advisory-branches-loca Email: [email protected] Phone: 1300 843 354 As many entrepreneurs in this space are first generation Aussies, sometimes with language barriers, please be assured we have members who are from China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Eire and the UK as well as dinkie-dies. We can help you.

01.01.2022 The impending death of desktop bookkeeping software? Today MYOB announced they were looking to withdraw support for their much-loved and robust, but elderly, clunky, rigid and increasingly obsolete desktop product. This was the market leader for micro business software for a very long time, followed by the Reckon QuickBooks / Account Right suite and, far behind, PC Cashflow Manager. ... We first encountered MYOB products in 2000 (yes, were experienced.. I refuse to accept the word old that is ageist!). At one point 85% of our clients were on it. Now less than 10% are, so the decision is understandable. Well, sometime next year, the choice will be down to ascendant cloud or dying desktop. In the cloud space Intuit QBO, MYOB Essentials, Xero and the still-limping Reckon One will compete for new business both between themselves and from the remaining firms clinging on to their beloved desktop products. And in the desktop space, will someone come in to replace MYOB? Or is it all over as the Boomers exit and the Gen X / Y / Z / What? take over and expect blazingly fast cloud-based product that is at home as much on their smartphone or tablet as it is on the desktop or laptop. What no one has discussed is what happens when the internet goes down, or goes slow. And go slow it does. Especially, apparently, for NBN dependent clients. We are still supported by Telstra fibre-optic and run most of the time at 50 Mips until the teenagers down the road go on line to play their blasted games And even with Telstra weve had a couple of outages in the past couple of years, so down tools, make another cuppa and do some phoning, filing, system backups (yes, were paranoid and still have servers) &c. So, RIP the best low-cost job costing / inventory management desktop software. And welcome to the world where Software As A Service means that the software house has you, the client, by the short and curlies miss a payment and get cut off. Am I happy about this transition? No, more indifferent. My only concern is that the hosted version stays up for clients who need the jobs / inventory / payroll aspects of this suite. If you are faced with the decision about what to do about your software options, why not call your nearest Smarter Advisory & Accounting office for a free of charge discussion of options the only cost will be your time and a cuppa for the member providing the free advice. Look up your nearest advisor on https://www.smarteraa.com.au/locations or call me on 0438 002 839 / +61 3 9752 8729 / [email protected] for a quick chat.
