13.01.2022 TEACHER TIP TUESDAY All students are required to learn new vocabulary in the classroom. For students with language difficulties, this can be very difficult. ... Use these tips to help students store and retrieve new vocabulary topics - Link new vocabulary to student’s pre-existing knowledge, so as to increase working memory. Encourage students to enact a variety of strategies when they encounter a word that they do not understand. These strategies may include: looking for synonyms, looking the word up in the dictionary, looking for parts in the word that they already know (e.g. roots/suffixes), orally defining the word, acting out words, using the word in a sentence, and orally teaching the meaning to other students. Include peer modelling in classroom learning. For example, have students who have good answers to questions with detail and a wide range of vocabulary share their work with other students Create a list of vocabulary associated with a new topic. Check student’s understanding of these words by having HIM/HER provide definitions. Limit the amount of new vocabulary given at any one time. Frequently revise and revisit new vocabulary, providing lots of repetitions and examples to cement your student’s understanding of these words.

03.01.2022 TEACHER TIP TUESDAY Reading comprehension How many teachers have students who read fluently but comprehend very little of what they are reading? ... We meet lots of these students, and it is important to note that reading comprehension is not a single skill, but a collection of skills. Some of these skills include: oral vocabulary knowledge discouse and narrative abilities phonology syntax -semantics For many of these students, it is important to target the above skills explicitly in the context of curricular-based language and literacy.

01.01.2022 FRIDAY FUNNY Tan I have a tuptate please Tate? Code for Can I have a cupcake please Kate?... Many of you know we work with children who have lots of phonological processes present in their speech, which affects how intelligible their overall speech is to unfamiliar listeners. A common phonological process that we work on is called ‘fronting.’ Fronting is when the k sound is replaced with a t and the g sound is replaced with a d. The excellent thing about phonological delays is that they are pretty easy to fix with lots of practise in between sessions. PS, how great does Kate look in her birthday gift
