22.01.2022 Today the Fairfield electorate welcomed Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism Jodi McKay MP and Shadow Minister for Better Public Se...rvices Sophie Cotsis MP. Together we visited several local businesses to see how our community is dealing with COVID-19 and how safety measures have been put in place by local COVID-safe registered businesses to protect both their customers and staff from potential infection. Despite a drop in trade caused by the pandemic, these local businesses have had to put in place extensive and costly measures to adhere to what the State Government mandates as an appropriate level of safety, and include: * Extra staff in order to serve customers more quickly and to monitor entry and exit points; to monitor customer details and for extra cleaning tasks * Sanitising stations * Multilingual signage for the walls and floors * Installation of acrylic barriers * Provision of hand sanitiser for customers; as well as face masks and gloves for staff members All of these measures have been costing our local businesses thousands of dollars every month, and they are doing this with less takings and with little assistance from the State Government. I am very proud of their efforts but we all know that to stay COVID-safe is not free, and if they are going to keep their doors open with the high standard of sanitation we witnessed today, they deserve some help. Together, Jodi McKay, Sophie Cotsis and I have called on the State Government to step up to the plate and to give these businesses the help they deserve to maintain a COVID-safe atmosphere for both their customers and their staff. We need more! We need clearer direction in multicultural communities such as Fairfield in their languages, and we need the State Government to increase support to local businesses so that they can meet the COVID-safe obligations that have been placed upon them at great expense. I would like to thank Jodi and Sophie for visiting us today. I would also like to thank Fairfield Chamber of Commerce President Vince Movizio; and local businesses Barone Pharmacy; Smart St Fish Market and XO Cafe' Bar Fairfield for welcoming us into their premises and for doing such a wonderful job at keeping their premises COVID-safe for staff and customers
