16.01.2022 A powerful reflection by SMBC lecturer, Kirk Patston...

14.01.2022 "COVID doesn't change the imperative. "Be prepared in season and out of season", said Paul. Jesus said "Go" and he didn't delineate the circumstances, just do it, and everywhere by the way. Oh, and COVID hasn't waned his authority or reduced his capacity to accompany us on his mission." We have a weekly video series with SMBC lecturers sharing from their area of expertise and applying it to life in the COVID Era. In this week's episode, Ross Webb (Wycliffe Bible Translators Australia), 2020 Missionary in Residence, shares his thoughts on evangelism: https://buff.ly/3hWkG8D

13.01.2022 The decision to go to Bible college is an important one. Will the college be faithful to the Bible, the inspired word of God? Will they stretch and challenge me to grow deeper in knowledge and love of God? Will they help mature and prepare me for a lifetime of gospel service? If you are considering studying at Bible college, we hope the sample lectures on our website give you a taste of study at SMBC and encourage you to want more. For the full lectures visit: https://buff.ly/339q1EI Enrolments are open for 2021 and our registrars are keen to chat and answer your questions. Give them a call on 02 9747 4780 or drop them a line at https://buff.ly/3cDAT0J

13.01.2022 The church is far from perfect; whether we have in mind the early church or the church today. How did the church get started? What issues did those first Christians struggle with? How did God use his people to spread the light of the gospel from its beginnings in Judea and Jerusalem to the very heart of the Roman Empire? In our intensive unit - Early New Testament Church - we study the Acts of the Apostles, or (to put it differently) the Acts of the risen Lord Jesus. We trace... how God was at work through his imperfect but faithful people. We will also look at some of the letters of the New Testament in the setting that Acts provides, and see how they give us a window into the issues faced by the early church and how the apostles dealt with these issues on the basis of the truth of the gospel of Christ. It is an interesting glimpse into the church then, and it provides guidance as the Lord Jesus continues to work through his imperfect people today. Start Date: Sunday 7 March 2021 Lecture Week: Tuesday 6 Saturday 10 April 2021 AQF level: 5/7 Learn more at: https://buff.ly/36hwiQW

12.01.2022 When we hear news of problems and suffering in the world, and also of the huge needs for gospel workers around the world, it can be overwhelming. It can lead to compassion fatigue. But in Genesis 18-19, God reveals a better way to respond. Watch or listen to this Principal's Hour #BibleTalk on #AnAlternativeToCompasionFatigue from #Genesis 18:16-19:29 at https://buff.ly/3o5H2Zc (If you're in a church that doesn't have a preacher just for a week or a long time please feel free to download and use our Bible Talk videos)

10.01.2022 Ruth and Esther make exciting Sunday School stories, but if we scratch a bit deeper we’ll find some thorny interpretive issues. Did Ruth the Moabite truly find belonging among the people of God? To what extent was Naomi’s sense of loss mingled with feelings of shame and guilt? Despite their circumstances, did Ruth and Esther go beyond acceptable sexual boundaries? Was ethnic intermarriage acceptable in the Old Testament? Should we view Esther’s actions against her enemies as ...‘revenge’? Was it right for Esther and Mordecai to hide their identity as God’s people? Does God still act in narratives where he is barely mentioned (Ruth) or not mentioned at all (Esther)? Our intensive unit - Ruth, Esther and Pastoral Ministry - gives us the opportunity to explore issues such as these with a view to pastoral application. In this unit you will develop an ability to use suitable known and new methodologies (including historical-critical, literary, ideological, ethnic, social-scientific and biblical-theological) to research and present solutions to your selected issue. You will then apply your findings to pastoral situations. 06.01.2022 The SMBC Master of Intercultural Studies (MICS) is a unique and completely online postgraduate offering with a focus on the specialised knowledge and research skills needed for expert intercultural ministry practice. - Did you know that the individual units of the MICS are available to study (or audit) apart from doing the whole course? - ‘Transformational Development’ will be available in Semester 1, 2021. This unit explores the Bible’s teaching on the nature of poverty and ...the way that God’s people are called to love the poor. 02.01.2022 For Christians, church is a central part of life. But what, according to the Bible, is the church? What is it we are seeking to do when we gather? What is the church’s nature and essential marks? In our intensive unit - The Church and its Ministry - we’ll explore the many facets of what church ministry is: how churches differ about decision making and governance; why some baptise infants but others don’t; how churches might be diminishing the importance of the Lord’s Supper; ...and how can pastors, and others in church leadership, pray biblically and helpfully for God’s people. Such issues continue to be hotly debated. We’ll seek to discuss them in a unifying, Bible-centred, and Christ-honouring way. Whatever your denominational background, we’d love to have you join us to explore Scripture and its application to our church life.
