13.01.2022 My experience with cancer started in 1982 when I lost my mother to lung cancer a few years after diagnosis and an operation to remove one of her lungs. Such a cruel disease with her eventually suffering multiple brain tumours and passing at the Calvary Hospital. I will remember the vision of her on her death bed as long as I live. She was a beautiful person who would help anyone, was the Post Mistress of Golden Grove and loved by the whole community Len Allington In the 1980s, the cancer survival rate was less than 50%. Today, almost seven in 10 Australians will survive for at least five years after a cancer diagnosis and in some cancers the survival is as high as 90%. 12.01.2022 My best friend recently had a diagnosis of Oral Cancer and had a large portion of her tongue removed at the age of 43. Whilst we are eternally grateful for the amazing work of her doctors, the procedure has left her with impeded speech, neck scarring from a tracheostomy and lymph node removal, plus skin graft and blood vessel removal from her lower arm to rebuild the tongue. Whilst she currently has the all clear, a cancer diagnosis is something that remains with you for life. My hope is that one day there will be a cure & the world can finally be cancer free.
