14.01.2022 Smith's Alternative - Coronavirus Update #1 In accordance with ACT Govt. policy, as per the Health Minister's announcement yesterday, Smith's Alternative will b...e operating as usual (with extra attention to hygiene) until further notice. Unfortunately we have had two touring acts cancel due to festival closures etc. (Keiran Kane & Raina Gellert tomorrow and COIG on Tuesday). But the rest of the schedule seems to be holding firm. We've heard many very sad tales from artists watching their income evaporate before their eyes and think that, unless you're in an at-risk category, the best thing we can all do is continue supporting artists by coming to shows. Smith's wishes one and all the best of luck as we traverse these unpredictable and troubling times. We feel very fortunate to have the mutual support and comfort afforded by being in the midst of a community that thinks beyond immediate selfish needs and panicky reactions to irresponsible news purveyors. Keep seeking out reliable information and sharing it. It's our best defence against those who would use us as pawns in their fear-mongering, divisive, profiteering plots. Stay safe. Look after each other. Love. The Smith's Alternative Family

14.01.2022 Need a laugh? Want to get out of the house? Streamed everything in the universe? Canberra's newest comedy room, FUNdamentals, has got your back.

14.01.2022 Smith’s has reopened and we are keen to once again to provide a home for Canberra’s creative community. We’re currently restricted to 24 people in the Band Room, 15 in the Bar and 20 or so outside. We’re keen to use the break as a bit of a refresh and thus are keen to canvas people’s ideas for using the various spaces, inside, out and the surrounds, at all times of the day and night. We are currently open from midday to 8pm every day, but we’re happy to extend those hours to ...allow for activities that suit. One concept we have is for a performance to be repeated during the day/night to a different audience each time. In this manner up to 72 tickets could be sold (three shows max?). Below we use the example of a band, but similar could apply to any type of show, on a case by case basis. We look forward to seeing you all and to hearing your stories of COVID times, and your ideas for excellent crazy things you’d like to do here. Example Show Band plays two/three 45-60 minute sets to two/three separate crowds of 24 people, pricing at $15+ per ticket depending on the draw of the act, with an all-night, three set ticket discounted by about 20% on the price of three tickets (ie.$20 for one set, $50 for three). We're going to continue with a 70/30 deal but add a minimum $200 production/door service fee (maximum $300). We can also have a donation ticket available for patrons who can't make it to the show but who would like to send some goodwill the artists’ way. An example of set times would be: Set One 7-8pm Set Two 8.30-9.30pm Set Three 10-11pm

10.01.2022 Our late show tonight, without a doubt one of the best, most original bands to ever play at Smith's, from Sydney, On The Stoop. The hit act at last year's Major's Creek Festival, On the Stoop segue 'from New-Orleans 2nd line to Dub Reggae, from Punk to Gypsy and a whole lot more in between, it's irresistible to get up and have a dance'.

01.01.2022 I don’t often write, but I have a terrible memory, so I thought I’d try to capture some moments. I rode in, the bike path full of riders, walkers, joggers. The weather is perfect. It seems peaceful, the calm before the storm perhaps. It’s good, I think, that we’ve had a brief respite before what may come next. At least we’ll be well rested. We’ve been closed a week due to the virus. I’m at Smith’s, paid some bills, did some admin, will do some painting. I feel slightly anxiou...s, but that’s pretty normal these days. I just went to the IGA, went the back way to avoid our residents outside, I’m not really up for a chat. Most businesses are closed, some open for takeaway. Zambreros had 2 people inside, another patiently waiting their turn outside, maintaining the required distance. Another venue was serving out the door, looking like they’re doing a dodgy transaction on the street, brown paper bag exchanged for electronic transaction. Mooseheads is literally boarded up, anticipating the marauding masses breaking their plate glass windows. A couple of places are signed, indicating their intent to reopen once their suppliers are back in action. I wonder if the two new bars will reopen once this is done. If any of us will. The bus interchange is full of the dodgy and the homeless, a bearded guy lying on the ground, arms outstretched, contemplating his hands. It’s easy to imagine complete lawlessness. Loretta is playing on the piano, not a great player but an interesting powerful voice. Singing about monsters. I wonder how many she has confronted in her life. Yesterday she told me is not scared. I just turned 49. It’s impossible to imagine what it will be like a year from now, if we’ll ride this wave softly, or if mass death will become a daily inevitability. Whether I or my loved ones will make it through. Whether I’ll see my family again. I can’t really think about that too much. That’s for later. For now we’re still looking towards a positive future, to reopen bright and shiny and clean, to welcome an audience hungry for company, hugs, entertainment, love, hope.

01.01.2022 Some people still don't know that we host life drawing every Thursday lunchtime, 12.30-1.30pm.
