25.01.2022 What an amazing achievement by The Council, the contractors and Jonathan who put hours into organising all of the plantings Looking forward to hopefully being able to help you plant to reach the target for next year!

25.01.2022 Now is the time to enjoy the Billabong Walk, after good rains and inflows from the Broken River it is looking fantastic. It reminds you of how the areas around... our rivers looked after a good rainfall season. Being an ephemeral billabong, it has been dry over the past few years, which gave the Weed Warriors an opportunity to work on it with their Breathing Life into the Bushland project. Can't wait to see what emerges after the waters recede. 24.01.2022 The Australian Bird Count is almost here!

23.01.2022 Recently planted in the Food Garden, Sclerolaena napiformis, or Turnip Copperburr is a really endangered plant, and is listed on both the Environment Protection... Biodiversity Conservation Act and the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act. The government has a species recovery plan for it, and the Turnip Copperburr plants that we just planted at the Gardens as part of our Care for the Rare collection are part of a much bigger project that has been running for many years. Seed has been collected over years from as many wild locations as possible, and our new plants are the result of all this hard work. We are so very lucky to be a part of this project and thanks to Landscape design architect Mel Stagg ( https://staggdla.com/ ) for giving her time to oversee the planting with the onsite staff from Greater Shepparton City Council. Mel has been involved with this project for a while now through her work at the Euroa Arboretum Inc and the Goulburn Broken Indigenous Seedbank mapping Turnip Copperburr populations in the Goulburn Broken region, and collecting seed from these wild populations. The staff at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria who supplied the Copperburr plants for the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton, have asked her to map out the layout for them, so the plant genetics can be tracked as part of their research. Basically, it serves to simplify recycling information to help you understand which bin parts of your packaging can go into. Check it out for yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch

14.01.2022 The announcement you have all been waiting for - Working Bees, Propagation and Weed Warriors are all recommencing, starting with our Sunday working bee this Sun...day at 9am. We have a COVID Safe plan approved by Council that we will run through at the start of each session to keep everyone safe and healthy whilst being active and productive. The major result of the COVID plan is that there will be no morning teas (i.e. shared foods) so please bring your own water bottles and if you wish to have a cuppa after bring your own cup coffee tea etc. There will still be a chance to catch up on what has been happening and results of interaction with Council staff as well as our own exchanges re what we have been doing. The other item is shared equipment. If you could bring your own gloves and maybe secateurs and the larger items i.e. shovels rakes etc. we will wipe with disinfectant wipes. Don't worry if you do not have any we can dunk our tools which are to be used in a bucket of water and disinfectant. As these activities are all outside spacing allowance is not a problem we just need to remember 1.5metres and masks. Propagation will start back on the 4th Wednesday and dates for Weed Warriors will be advised as soon as they have been confirmed. Look forward to seeing everyone again. 13.01.2022 Im stoked to be a Chief Counter for BirdLife Australia and you can be a counter too. The Aussie Backyard Bird Count 2020 is just around the corner. Its the best... way any of us can get involved with some citizen science and help add valuable data nationwide about our amazing birds and their distribution. The whole family can be involved and all it takes is 20 mins sometime between the 19th -25th October. You can join me by registering here ; https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/?Costa You can do your count in your backyard, at the local park, at nan and pops place, wherever you like. If you dont have the app you can always fill out the forms on the website but the main ingredient you need is 20 minutes to sit or stand and observe what birds are around that location. There is a live launch of the event of Monday 19th and Ill let you now about that on the day. Heres links to the Birdlife Australia Website and Aussie Backyard BirdCount Website, also the Facebook Instagram and Twitter pages for all the info you need to know and lots of great facts. Ill be doing a few counts over the week and will go live on one of them and we can talk about our bird counting experiences. Let the family know, the grand kids, nieces, nephews, neighbours and have some fun supporting our birdlife and recording our biodiversity. After the year that has been this data is even more valuable to see just how our birdlife has faired given the bushfires and ongoing drought. 07.01.2022 It’s National Wombat Day and here are plenty of reasons to celebrate these amazing marsupials! Do you know that Wombats have backward facing pouches? This is... to make sure mum doesn’t accidentally get her joey covered in dirt while she’s digging her burrows! Wombats are the only species known to have square shaped poo - there are a few reasons as to why scientists believe this is the case. The Australian marsupial can pass up to 100 deposits of poo a night and they use the piles to mark their territory. The shape helps to stop it from rolling away! Despite having round anuses like other mammals, wombats do not produce round pellets, tubular coils or messy piles. Researchers have found that the varied elasticity of the intestines help to sculpt the poop into cubes! There are three species of wombats found only in Australia. All three are regrettably either close to threatened or critically endangered - the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat is one of the world's most endangered animals. Our Park is home to two species of these "bulldozers of the bush". There’s Sniff our Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat enjoying a good itch in this video plus Maggie and Noddy our Bare-nosed Wombats. Happy Wombat Day!
