They dedicated their lives to prayer and fasting, and wondered whether their childlessness was a sign of God's displeasure with them. After a long life of prayer however, an angel appeared to St. Anna, and told her she would conceive a child saying, "The Lord has heard your prayer, and you shal...l conceive, and shall bring forth, and your seed shall be spoken of in all the world." The baby girl was named Mary, implying she was born of God's mercy, and her parents decided she would be offered to God as a consecrated Virgin for the rest of her life.
