21.01.2022 Australian Seabird Rescue held a Training Course today in the comfort of a movie theatre. A great day was had by all...we talked Sea Turtles, Pelicans, Penguins, Seabirds and my favourite topic..Sea Snakes. Presenting a workshop on Sea Snakes was an honour for me and although it was initially a small presentation, they handed me a microphone and it lasted a little longer than I anticipated.

11.01.2022 You asked.. I answered So one question was on how to set up and maintain a reptile enclosure. The below is in the video - recapping. ... I always use :- 1. Surgical scrub- mixed with warm water, I use a non scratch scourer sponge to scrub the entire enclosure (removing sliding doors to clean separately). 2.Then rinse off with warm water using a towel 3. Cotton buds are awesome to clean out any gunk from the sliding door tracks. 4. F10 everything -High ratio 10ml/250ml water- (I even use it as a body spray when I treat pelicans with botulism ). 5. Can air dry or wipe if runs 6. I’m trying out a new substrate strategy that I came up with- I was in coles and saw laundry bags, you know the ones with zippers I though id fill them up with newspaper kitty litter. (Empty when dirty and seems easy to wash the bags to reuse). -This way our reptiles don’t ingest any substrate- and in addition..if you have a heat mat (under the enclosure only) it heats up like a warm snuggly pillow. (This could also work for all wildlife needing warmth ?) 7. Heat gradient - Hot and Cool Side always. - Hot side- I use a basking light (always inside a heat cage). It sits low enough to generate temps to 36 degrees (which is what my guys like). If your temps are not reaching high enough- buy a hotter globe -OR- bring the floor up with branches/ logs or whatever you choose. Always put a thermometer exactly on the hottest spot your snake will sit. I’ve a heat mat (under the enclosure- It ranges from 7 to 12 watts. I’ve put the kitty litter pillows on top to spread the warmth. A thermostat is great, it plugs into your basking light and heat mat. It turns off when you set the temp to what you want it to be so that your snake never overheats. (Great for summer). -Cool Side- Opposite side has no heat. This creates a heat gradient. Your (ectothermic) snake may want to bask to warm up for many hours before moving to a cooler spot for many hours. Put a thermometer on the cool side too. Water bowls go down the cool side. We don’t want to create too much humidity by putting a water bowl on the hot side. Water evaporates more with heat and your snake may end up with health issues like scale rot or respiratory issues if the humidity is too high. 8. Hides and logs- Love them ! Hot side/ cold side.. all over as they have fun with them For more information on Standards and General Practice for keeping reptiles, here is a link to the current code in place by the OEH. https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//keeping-private-reptil
09.01.2022 My absolute favourite part of rehabilitation is the release and giving them a second chance at life. Today’s turtle release was lovely, with lots of warmth and laugher along with satisfaction
07.01.2022 If you have pet reptiles...what would you like to see in a tutorial ? Comment and I’ll do a tutorial or attempt to do one for you No question is silly, and also, if you have a different method for something that works for you in any of my posts, I’d also love to hear that as I’m always learning x
