25.01.2022 Fascinating educational video, which illustrates the common belief regarding bigger blues being able to see off browns ...But before reifying it, remember there are also plenty of videos around showing the inverse, and also those guys managing to share habitat! But in general when it comes to predation, size and surprise etc. matters in these contests, as they say!
24.01.2022 Wow! Remarkable adaptive hybridity!
24.01.2022 That’s no stick floating in the water feature! Well, maybe a lightning one Tania did a great job of keeping calm when she spotted a small Eastern brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis) that had likely fallen into her water feature when either trying to re-hydrate or thermo-regulate. The snake was unable to exit the pond itself and would have ultimately got exhausted and drowned had she not given us a call. So thanks for helping this brown beauty out, Tania! It had clea...rly been in there for some time and was absolutely delighted to hold on to my hook and get airlifted out. After a short rest at my place, he’s now back on dry land in a bushland residence. 23.01.2022 Spotted Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis). Thanks to Brian La Rance for confirming the ID!
23.01.2022 Releasing a scaly 'guest' who tried to check in at the Hyatt Hotel Canberra - A Park Hyatt Hotel today! Staff at the luxury hotel were absolutely wonderful and managed to keep composed and sequester the snake in a stairwell (using towels to keep it contained until I arrived). This action made my job easy, so thanks guys It now has the pick of a different style of accommodation in a nearby bushland milieu! ... #WildOz #Cbr #Canberra #bushcapital #snake #snakecatcher #ACT
23.01.2022 Another bluey disguised as a brownie. Duly returned to his rightful woodpile to get on with the good lizard life.
22.01.2022 Nice little yearling #Easternbrown snake from #Queanbeyan being released. This little lightening noodle was carefully tracked by Greg going into Water Meter sump box. Greg and colleague didn’t take their eye off the box for a second until I arrived on scene which made my job very simple: thanks guys ! This nicely coloured and detailed brownie now in a bushland habitat with plenty of cover to choose from.... #brownsnake #Wildlife #WildOz #EasternBrownSnake #pseudonajatextilis #canberralocals #nature #animallovers #snakerescue
21.01.2022 Great shot of a lovely hatchling Eastern brown snake by Gerard at Canberra Birds and Wildlife.
21.01.2022 Hang on, that ain’t no stick or root blocking the drain..... Ann and Pete got a bit of a surprise when they found this scaly visitor having a rest today in #Crace. Some video of rescue to follow tomo. #canberra #canberralocals #canberralife #bushcapital #snakecatchercanberra #canberrasnakes #Easternbrown #brownsnake #easternbrownsnake #pseudonajatextilis #ACT #CBR #snakes #conservation #nature #wildlife #ecology #herpetology #snakesinthesuburbs #wearecbr #thiscanberralife
20.01.2022 This has got to be in my top 3 list of favourite snakes.
17.01.2022 The baby Eastern brown snake call out that ‘morphed’ into being a rarely seen Burton’s Snake-lizard (Lialis burtonis)! This is actually the first of these guys I have encountered! More on this extraordinary looking, and evolutionarily crafted, creature a bit later! #Burtons #lizard #lizards #snakelizard #snakelizards #leglesslizard #Lialisburtonis #Lialis #burtonis #wildlife #nature #naturephotography #naturelovers #WildOz #queanbeyan #canberra #CBR #BushCapital #canberralife #canberralocals #canberranature #wearecbr #abcmyphoto #herpetology #conservation #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation
16.01.2022 I just wanted to post this upsetting picture taken by one of our page followers this morning This nice-sized adult Eastern brown snake was found dead at the side of the road. It should have had plenty more living to enjoy. Whether this guy was accidentally or purposefully struck, we’ll never know. But please, please keep an eye out for our wildlife during the warmer months on or near the road, so many critters lose their lives in this tragic way. It is a far too familiar s...ight for us wildlife rescuers/workers. As the poster rightly said with her picture, Sad demise for a beautiful creature. I couldn’t agree more. We need to look after - and out for - our wild creatures: the ecosystem and therefore our environment depends on them...It is all very finely balanced and we shouldn’t ever take it for granted. #Cbr #Canberra #canberralocals #ACT #wildlife #WildOz #brownsnake #easternbrown
16.01.2022 This beautiful bluey had to be rescued from a property after the retaining wall it was inhabitaing was inadvertently demolished as part of backyard renovations. I was called in to relocate the bluey to a safer habitat, which I duly did - by simply walking down the same street with it to a piece of quiet scrubland at the end of the cul de sac. This means the blue is proximate to her home range which is important for ecological reasons. What a treat getting to share our bakyar...ds with such amazing wild critters! Post your favourite bluey pics in the comments, and lets keep looking out for - and after - our lizard friends! #Canberra #CanberraWildlife #UrbanWildlife #Cbr #ACT #BushCapital #Canberralife #Canberralocals #wearecbr #Wildlife #BackyardBuddies #reptiles #reptile #Lizard #Lizards #Bluey #Skink #Easternbluetongue #bluetonguelizard #bluetongue #bluetongueskink #conservation #nature #Intothewild
16.01.2022 Such a wonderful picture illustrating the curiosity of the eastern brown snake. This is a classic 'periscoping' posture, where the snake is sussing out the surrounding environment. This beauty of a picture taken by the wonderful, Keith Kaney, who kindly shared it with us for the purposes of snake education.
16.01.2022 This storm front affords an ideal opportunity to post this release video from a while back! A Red-bellied black snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) being re-circulated into a watery and frog-laden landscape. This is perhaps a better habitat than the South.Point Tuggeranong shopping centre in #Tuggeranong where it was picked up?! What an iconic part of the Australian herpetofauna, the favourite snake/reptile of many. 14.01.2022 Another beauty by the Canberra Snake Whisperer, Keith Kaney!
12.01.2022 Incidentally, I had to replace my last set of tubes with new ones recently, cos they’d had so much use. Anyway, here’s hoping snakes get it easier in years to come. That’s why educating little people about their evolutionary development, and ecological role and behaviours is so important. It is through this, that they can come to be more familiar and appreciative of the different forms and functions of our local wildlife: and live with and look after it better. Well done for raising awareness, ACT Wildlife!
11.01.2022 Hows about this for a photograph this cloudy Thursday? The magic - and expressiveness - of Eastern Browns captured by Keith Kaney. This species of snake never ceases to astound me with their various sensory and biomechanical capacities, and uncanny knack of seemingly disappearing into thin air...! ;)
11.01.2022 Nice piece by Michael Weaver in The RiotACT.
10.01.2022 Every season I get several what might be called sneaky, or in less diplomatic terms, fecking slippery as all heck, snakes... These are the uber-cautious ones that might be inhabiting a cavity under a concrete slab, and only appear irregularly for a short time - while never straying more than a few feet from safety - before reentering their burrows. Of course, they choose shelter sites with excellent lines of sight to detect approaching threats, like a big scottish geezer.... This approx 2ft #easternbrown frae #Monash was one such creature. It was seen on multiple occasions by the concerned homeowners only to disappear each time either minutes or moments before I arrived. I’m honestly sure it sensed me coming Moreover, these guys are always tricky to handle as there is little margin for error: with the bitey end never far from my hand. And as you all know, they have the potency of and can move like proverbial ! Anyway, patience(!) and perseverance paid off in the end and here’s the little lady heading off into bushland to continue her journey. Of course, my camera ran out of memory as she exited the bag (how poetical), so had to delete a few files to get some footage of her disappearing (again!). What a wonderful and tenacious wee snake, you had me beat girly! Now stay safe and avoid all the other threats out there, it’s a bloody high-risk landscape for you...
10.01.2022 Some of you might find the content of this video infotaining! Thanks to Christina Towns for giving us the heads up https://www.facebook.com/abchobart/videos/377770986876882/
08.01.2022 Working with wildlife is a bit of a rollercoaster ride, with plenty of ups and downs. In this case, it’s the latter, with me having to take a beautiful 1.5m Eastern brown snake to the fabulous Dr Ben Goddard at Greencross Vets after it had been in an altercation with a dog that it was trying to flee from. As you’ll see in the x-ray images, this poor brownie had multiple bites and a complete spinal rupture. There is no way back from this. Mercifully, the dog is doing fine ...now, as these interactions often end wretchedly for both animals. Thanks for doing all you did, Dr Goddard, some good karma to you for releasing my friend humanely from its suffering.
08.01.2022 Red-bellied black snakes (Pseudechis porphyriacus) are capable of quite remarkable things. Although we ordinarily encounter them in terrestrial contexts, here on show is their incredible aquatic capacity. The video illustrates a red-belly hunting a two-spined blackfish in reasonably shallow water, a key prey item for this species. Look at the effortless movement on display, as it almost glides through the water in ways comparable to a marine creature. These guys are able to h...old their breath underwater for a significant amount of time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH4K5TGyTps&t=3s Many thanks to Ryan Hill for giving us permission to share this 'breathtaking' video!
08.01.2022 Busy day of browns!! Here’s one from #Bonner that was hiding out in a retaining wall! Still has some wall dust on his dorsal side! Now in a nice bushland reserve where it can get cover in a nice fallen log. Stay safe wee one! Cheers and have a good night!... #canberra #canberralocals #canberralife #bushcapital #snakecatchercanberra #canberrasnakes #Easternbrown #brownsnake #easternbrownsnake #pseudonajatextilis #ACT #CBR #snakes #conservation #nature #wildlife #ecology #herpetology #snakesinthesuburbs #wearecbr #thiscanberranlife
07.01.2022 As we saw recently, violence against snakes is - I suspect - still fairly prevalent in our society. Deeply entrenched attitudes that snakes are malign, fearsome and a problem has a long history, and will take much education to shift, especially through people (specifically our younger generations) becoming more snake aware and familiar so they can live more safely with these, often highly venomous, if shy, creatures. But good things are definitely happening on this front! He...re's hoping I don't see any more of the first picture for the rest of the season, especially because we - and others - exist to do the work of safely relocating any snakes causing a potential issue (see second picture, with a lovely sized brown snake that was relocated to a reserve). Or (and preferably), we can just leave them be, and admire them doing their ecological thing from a safe distance... ;) See more
05.01.2022 Although we consider these guys as being wild, they often appear in distinctly unwildor in this case, hyper-commercialisedplaces! This hefty #Redbelly was living in a wall cavity in a busy shopping centre car park next to a car wash, and was certainly making the Star Car Wash team and customers a wee bit uneasy! You can’t see in the video but the snake was just away to disappear back into its hole, so was very relieved to get hold of it! I was also told the snake had been... seen about a week before falling off the wall next to the stairwell you can see at the start of the video where the onlookers are, but fortunately no injuries were detected when I inspected it and it sure moved fine! Also, if it had stayed there, it would have likely come to harm from a car. So thankfully now in safer and, dare I say, more appropriate watery - and not concrete - habitat!!! Thanks to Mohamed and colleagues for sharing the catch video. Cheers all, Gavin #Canberra #CBR #RBBS #WildOz #pseudechisporphyriacus #strangeplaces #sneakysnake #snakerescue #canberrasnakes #snakecatchercanberra My Tuggeranong
04.01.2022 Another day, another Eastern brown snake being relocated! This guy appeared in a #Curtin premise this avo. Now free from any potential human interference in a bushland residence. Farewell mon ami, stay away from trouble!
03.01.2022 My first hatchling Eastern brown snake of the season. And a beautiful banded one at that! In my experience, it is rare for these noodles to be around so early in the season in the bush capital, as we don't ordinarily get calls for them until January! But as you all know, this has been a bloody strange year! Our wee scaly friend had made its way inside a house in #McKellar, and then behind a fecking dishwasher unit just before I arrived! So here is some of the catch and the r...elease footage of it to bring you and your friends some Monday amusement. Remember, don't be fooled by this little noodle's cuteness and calmness: it is a HIGHLY VENOMOUS critter even at this tiny size, with its venom yield constituted by potent neurotoxins which can have devastating effects on human and other mammalian bodies. As such, it is capable of delivering a fatal bite, and can spring like lightning when stressed or threatened. Hence, the thick gloves I am wearing and my holding it gently, but securely. And of course, please DO NOT copy what you see in the videos shown. We don't charge much to safely remove and relocate these guys for you, and are trained and experienced in doing just that. We just want to get these beauties back in circulation in a better environment for them and you as soon as possible. It is likely that these nice markings you see here will fade away over time as the snake grows and sloughs skins, but occasionally, we will pick up adult Eastern brown snakes that have retained their faint bands from their very early days. See ya little beauty, and stay away from trouble!
02.01.2022 But another poor snake that had to be taken to the vet after being injured by a car. Please do watch out for our wild creatures when driving, and where possible, give them a wide berth so they can live their lives and do their ecological thing. #brownsnake #easternbrown #pseudonajatextilis #canberra #bushcapital #canberralocals #canberralife #wildlife #animalrescue #snakerescue
01.01.2022 One of the most important and rewarding aspects of doing wildlife/snake work is the education opportunity it opens up. I had the considerable pleasure of visiting Tharwa Preschool early this morn to do an impromptu snake Q & A session with some wee humans. Here is what I was asked...and tried to answer(!) The reptilian future is bright, I think, judging by the excitement and wisdom (and fine art!) that was buzzing about the classroom ... Thanks for having me along for a chat and to show some of my reptile friends !
