25.01.2022 Exercises you need to master during the lockdown pt 3/4 Lunges! Lunges are such a versatile exercise that can be varied in a range of ways to emphasise different muscles and accomodate for different skill levels. ... The great part of this exercise (similar to the other exercises I’ve posted) is that to get started, you don’t need any equipment! Now If you are a bit more experienced, lunges can still be extremely effective for building muscle! You could add weight via holding a duffel bag/backpack with books in it, add a resistance band or as Stef mentioned in her Bulgarian Split Squat post, add in paused reps, isometrics, 1/4 reps etc. Below is a simple progression/regression list from Beginner to Advanced. 1 Split Squat (shown) - When setting up, a general guideline is to set up your feet so that at the very bottom of the movement, both your legs are at a right angle. 2 Front Foot or Rear Foot Elevated Split Squat (2-8) - For this variation, chose which foot you would like to have elevated and raise them by approx 2-8 inches. 3 Reverse Lunges - This one is only harder because it requires a bit more coordination. You will step backwards into your lunge position and stand back up as usual, then alternate legs each rep. Focus on getting consistent length lunges instead doing them as quickly as possible. 4 Walking Lunges - Unlike the reverse lunge, you will now be moving forward with each step you take as you alternate legs. Same advice goes, aim for quality over getting through it. 5 Bulgarian Split Squat (see Stef’s post for a video demonstration) - Now you’ll have your rear foot elevated by approx 8-18 (mainly depending on height of the person) As you are learning the exercise I would say focus on aiming for a descent of about 3 seconds and 1 second on the way up. This will help build the coordination and control to improve at the exercise. As always, find the right variation for you, aim to do it 2-3 x per week and once you can do 4 sets x 15 reps each leg with only 60-90 seconds rest between sets, either add weight to the movement or progress to the next variation. 07.01.2022 #Repost @melbournestrengthandfitness with @get_repost #tbt when we were training in the gym With the information that our isolation restrictions are slowly starting to lift... many of us are thinking about getting back into the gym. And a lot of us are also contemplating STARTING the gym for the first time. ... With both scenarios the most frequent questions I get asked are: How can I make my gym routine stick this time around? And: How can I get long-lasting results? 1. First and foremost you need to get serious about your WHY. Why are you attending the gym in the first place. To be blunt, if your answer is to get fitter you are not being honest with yourself. So start getting REAL. Do you want to ACTUALLY look great naked!? Ok great - we can work with that! 2. You need a targeted plan. Structure is key! Work backwards from your end goal. Be realistic with what is achievable. Be willing to put in the hard work. If you don’t know what to do, hire a coach to get you there. 3. While your primary goal should be your main driver, think of the other health benefits of training to keep you motivated along the way. There are SO MANY, including: - Reducing body fat levels - This is an obvious one. While it is a HUGE and amazing motivator, it should not be our only motivator! - Improved mental health and cognitive decline - Yep! Great for all aspects of our brain. - Improved bone density and reduced chance of injury. - Reduction of disease including: diabetes, heart disease & cardio-respiratory disease - Slows down the aging process - winning!
