20.01.2022 Marine biologist & Pablo Cogollos was lucky enough to swim with Melanistic Mantas on the reefs off Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort! Check out the video and find o...ut a bit more about these mantas "Swiming with Melanistic Reef Mantas is one of the closest and coolest encounters I have had! The frequency of melanism varies across the world’s Manta populations. A study published by the Marine Megafauna Foundation last year suggested that percentages of melanism across various locations may be a result of more random evolutionary processes such as genetic drift. Even though it was theorised that their dark underbellies would make them more visible to predators, they found that a manta’s ‘darkness’ did not have a negative influence on its risk of predation. Melanistic Mantas are not a different species but are simply a different colour variation (or ‘colour morph’) within a species. " Pablo was lucky enough to swim with several of these unique mantas over at Lady Elliot Island and used the Project Manta - The manta rays of Australia database to identify the ones he swam with! This video is of a manta named Saturn!

14.01.2022 Perhaps the most beautiful shark of them all: the Leopard Shark The leopard shark is nocturnal, and will actively hunt for molluscs, crustaceans and small bon...y fish inside holes and crevices in the reef at night. During the day however, they are as sluggish as teenagers getting ready for school and are often found resting on the sea bottom. To add confusion to the name, these sharks are also referred to as Zebra Sharks due to the completely different stripe pattern they have as juveniles. According to research conducted by the IUCN, the numbers of these animals are reducing and they are at a very high risk of becoming extinct. The present conservation status for the Leopard/ Zebra shark is Endangered. #sharkweek . . . .
