18.01.2022 Fellowships open for CQ healthcare innovators Nurses and midwives will have the opportunity to become leaders of innovation in the health system, with the next round of research fellowships opening for applications today. Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said up to $430,000 is available for the fifth round of the Nursing & Midwifery Research Fellowships (NMRF). Medical research is the reason we deliver healthcare the way we do, he said. It will continue to pave the wa...y for the future of healthcare. We’re supporting the next generation of medical researchers to ensure Queensland continues as leaders in health innovation. Member for Keppel and Assistance Education Minister Mrs Brittany Lauga said the Palaszczuk Government was delivering on healthcare. Central Queensland Health treats more than 700,000 patients each year, Mrs Lauga said. We have increased the number of nurses and midwives by 137 since coming to government in 2015. We want Queenslanders to know they’re getting the very best in medical care. This program has been very successful to date, with around $1.3 million awarded to 28 recipients under the previous four rounds, resulting in significant discoveries. The NMRF program is a partnership between the Queensland Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and Queensland Health. Chair of the Queensland Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, Professor Patsy Yates encourages all Queensland nurses and midwives to consider applying for a fellowship. Research is key for improving care for our patients and is also a rewarding professional development opportunity. Up to seven fellowships are available under four categories Novice Researcher, Early-Career Researcher, Experienced Researcher and Research Implementation. Associate Professor Amanda Ullman, based at Griffith University and the Queensland Children's Hospital, was awarded a fellowship in 2015, under the Early-Career Researcher category. Thanks to the fellowship, I led a project that examined complications associated with central venous lines the tubes that are inserted into the heart for administering treatment for children with complex health conditions, such as cancer, she said. Applications are now open and are due to close 15 March 2019. Further information, including application guidelines and forms, can be found on the Queensland Health website.

02.01.2022 We are excited to share that the maximum target wave-face height of 2.4m (8ft) has been achieved! 3 x world bodyboard champ Ben Player was frothing to get insid...e this beast to give us scale (yes he made it out!). A wave-face height of 2.4m was the theoretical safe maximum for the prototype, based on initial engineering calculations and CFD modelling. To achieve this in real world testing is a huge milestone for Surf Lakes, and a credit to our talented and committed team. 01.01.2022 18 apprentices begin training at Ergon Rockhampton Mr Barry O’Rourke, Member for Rockhampton will meet eighteen apprentices who begin their training today at the Ergon Energy Training depot at Glenmore Road. Queensland’s electricity industry has its eye firmly on the future with 127 apprentices across Queensland, including 26 in the Rockhampton region, kicking off careers with the state’s publicly-owned electricity businesses.... These apprentices will become important members of teams across the state that ensure Queensland’s reliable and secure energy supply,’’ Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said. This apprenticeship can become a very rewarding long-term career,’’ Mr O’Rourke said. When natural disasters strike, it’ll be these young men and women, who the community will turn to, as part of the Ergon team, to get the power back up and running. When a cyclone or storm rips through the region, they will be the ones working around the clock to get lives back on track. The Palaszczuk Government is continuing to create jobs for Queenslanders, including these much sought-after apprenticeships.’’ A further four apprentices started at CS Energy’s Callide Power station in mid-January and another four at the Stanwell Power Station. A further 52 apprentices attended training with Ergon Energy in Townsville and Toowoomba last week and Cairns and Maryborough this week and will soon head to 32 depots across regional and rural Queensland. Stanwell has hired nine apprentices at its power stations, Stanwell, Tarong near Kingaroy and Kareeya Hydro near Tully. Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said in a traditionally male-dominated industry, it was encouraging to see 32 women among the new recruits and 11 identifying as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. The apprentices can train in a range of trades: communications technician, distribution linesperson, transmission linesperson, mechanical fitter, electrician or underground cable jointer. I hope it will be the start of a long and enjoyable career for each of them,’’ Mrs Lauga said.
