23.01.2022 Meet two female Tawny Frogmouths, ‘Tina Turner’ and ‘Grumpy’ rescued a few months ago by LAOKO volunteers! Tina Turner was hit by a car and sustained a broken leg, and lots of broken feathers, and the other Tawny, Grumpy was caught in a barbed wire fence on property near Bombala and also had lots of damaged feathers. They were assessed by Dr Peter Brennan, and Dr Hamish Cameron in Queanbeyan pinned Tina Turner’s broken leg. Tina Turner and Grumpy, were cared for by LAOKO c...arers Cathy and Garry, and later taken to Tawny expert, Melissa from neighbouring wildlife group Wildcare Queanbeyan, who had a larger aviary to continue their rehabilitation. Feathers take many months to grow back and Tina’s leg has healed beautifully. The good news is both Tawnys have been released on a LAOKO member’s property FAR away from roads and barbed wire fences! Tawnys are usually territorial, but they have been in care so long they have lost their territory and Tina and Grumpy have become great buddies! It has been a great team effort and we appreciate the support from Dr Peter Brennan (Monaro Vet Clinic in Cooma), Melissa from Wildcare Queanbeyan, Dr Hamish Cameron, LAOKO members Cathy, Gary and Helen who rescued Grumpy. For injured wildlife call LAOKO on the emergency number 6456 1313. Photo credit: Melissa Pearce

23.01.2022 Let’s wrap the week up with a happy reunion! These two Magpie siblings were taken into care by LAOKO, one week apart. Found at the base of the same pine tree on a property at Berridale, the nest was too high in the tree for the nestlings to be returned. Leaving them on the ground rendered them vulnerable to predatory attack and the property owner observed the parents had turned their attention to the viable chicks still in the nest. It seems these wee ones were abandoned. S...o here we have ‘Pino’ (meaning ‘pine’ in Italian) on the left (he came into care last Saturday) and ‘Pina’ on the right. Pina has a sore leg which is getting better each day. The property owners cared for her prior to contacting LAOKO for assistance today (they did a great job!). And yes, if a third sibling comes into care, it shall be named ‘Colada’! These young ones are nestlings, possibly getting ready to start some out-of-nest time and gradually strengthen their legs and wings. But for now, they seem quite happy to snuggle - plenty of nest room for everybody! If you come across young birds on the ground, please don’t remove them, particularly if you see the parents nearby. Call LAOKO on 6456 1313 for further advice and assistance. Photo credit: Lisa Petroff

19.01.2022 Hello Wombat Wednesday! We hope you're hanging with good mates and sharing the love - just like Izzy and Willis, two of our cool little wombats in care! Photo credit: Rebecca Cowan

16.01.2022 Thanks to our dedicated Mange Treatment Coordinator, Elena Guarracino, and the Adaminaby gang for tackling wombats with mange in that region of the Snowy Mountains!

16.01.2022 The Sustainable Land Expo at Dalgety Showgrounds today was a hit! Admittedly it was a chilly start (nothing a coffee and egg/bacon roll didn’t fix) but the sun came out and the lime green LAOKO tent swung into action! Wombat mange treatment was a common topic of discussion with our life-sized soft toy wombat demonstrating how a burrow flap works. We had plenty of information brochures available covering topics such as wildlife friendly fencing and fruit tree netting, wombat related topics and our own information brochure, new fridge magnets and new car bumper stickers! We met some really lovely and enthusiastic people, many who were new to the Snowy Mountains region, so it was great to chat all things wildlife with them. And it was soooo good to be out and about promoting LAOKO again in these Covid-weird times!

15.01.2022 Oh yeah baby, you know what time of day it is. It's hello Wombat Wednesday! Young 'Iris' here is just over 3kgs of wombat love - happy, chilled and loving her second chance at life. Iris and her buddies love their milk feeding time, love their day nap and LOVE making a racket at night when their humans are trying to sleep! Iris is being rehabilitated by LAOKO wombat carer Jenny. ... Photo: Lisa Petroff

15.01.2022 Self-sustainability for wildlife sector volunteers - many of us need this reminder. Two Green Threads explores this necessity in their online resource targeted at many of us who may sometimes put wildlife in our care first, forgetting we need to be in good shape ourselves to continue our commitment to rehabilitating native wildlife. Take a moment to read...you won't regret it

14.01.2022 Meet three of our magpie chick rescues who REALLY love their food! Remember ‘Eddie’ who was a nestling rescued a few weeks ago? That’s him on the left! A full grown fledgling! To the right is his mate ‘Patsy’ - she is a fledgling who is developing wing strength and has a ‘thing’ for the bird bath In the middle is one of our newest rescues, a branchling named ‘Pucci’ - he’s growing his flight feathers and is much more reserved than the other two (rarely gets a word in!). Hopefully we can bring you footage soon of Patsy and Eddie’s flight adventures together (it won’t be long now)!

11.01.2022 Hello Wombat Wednesday! When you grow up and move into the new BIG enclosure and find the previous occupants didn't Spring clean their burrow upon vacating! Volume up for the snorts of disapproval! Thanks to LAOKO wombat carer Rebecca Cowan for the footage

10.01.2022 Not busy this Saturday? LAOKO will be at the Sustainable Land Expo being held this Saturday 7th of November 2020 at the Dalgety Showground! Our stall will provide information on wildlife topics relevant to the region/expo and sell merchandise. Our market stalls always provide an excellent opportunity for members new and old to catch up over a cuppa and juicy egg & bacon roll - and it’s been a while since we’ve all done that! If you’re free for an hour or so on Saturday an...d wish to mosey on down, we’ll be setting up from 8am for a 9am start. It’s totally casual and there’s a pub across the road if you need to quench your thirst at lunch time. Dalgety Showground is located corner of Snowy River Way and Campbell St, by the bridge. Street parking is available for public. We’d love to see you there! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Sustainable Land Expo is a community event organised by the Dalgety Chamber of Commerce to assist in educating local landholders on topics such as: the responsibilities of owning rural land how to manage land in a sustainable and productive manner for now and the future Local council, Upper Snowy Landcare, South East Local Land Services (SE LLS), South East Rural and various agriculture services are holding info stalls. There’ll be presentations on land management, biosecurity and livestock matters plus live demos involving working dogs, fencing displays, weed control and not to forget pony rides for the kids! Yee-haa!'

10.01.2022 It’s not often we’re asked to assist with Flying Foxes but this little one was in desperate need. A member of the public found a dead Flying Fox on her travels. Decomposition suggested the bat had been dead for several days, however upon checking under the animal’s wings a small Flying Fox pup was discovered, very cold and dehydrated. It needed immediate attention. After sourcing a range of rescue options, and with time being critical, LAOKO was eventually contacted to... assist. Luckily we had one of our experienced, trained and vaccinated bat carers living nearby who immediately assessed the pup and began a solid regime of around the clock care to rehydrate the baby, giving him the best chance of survival. With the quick action of our bat carer, guidance and communication from our Animal Coordinator and invaluable advice from a neighbouring group’s bat expert, the little one was eventually transported to his new home, and new bat buddy, who he’ll grow up with. Excellent team effort to ensure this little one survived - happy days! Photo credit: Janelle Jenkins

08.01.2022 LAOKO would like to send a huge THANK YOU to Cooma SES who came to the rescue for a trapped juvenile magpie this morning! Called in by an eagle-eyed member of the public, the young magpie was stuck in a tree fork and couldn't release itself. LAOKO contacted our local SES team for assistance who were able to free the magpie. Sadly though, after vet assessment, it was discovered the fledgling magpie had a badly broken leg that was irreparable and was humanely euthanased.... Thank you to all involved and to Dr Peter Brennan for treating the magpie.

05.01.2022 Let’s glide into the weekend with this relaxing footage of a feathertail glider joey enjoying her feeding time. ‘Miss Bitey’ here (a name well earned apparently) currently weighs a tiny 5.2 grams - that’s lighter than a pen! She’s fed a special marsupial milk formula (Biolac) and is on 4 hourly feeds. An adult glider’s diet consists of pollen, nectar, insects and seeds. Pollen is extracted quite easily from flowers as the tongue of a feathertail glider is long and brush-li...ke. Miss Bitey is doing really well and in care with a feathertail glider expert - we look forward to her growing up, ready for release! Video: Lisa Petroff / Kelly Tunks-McMahon / Kylie Clifford

03.01.2022 Woah! What a windy day in the Snowy Mountains today! LAOKO had five call outs for ‘nestlings of various kinds’ blown out of nests today, including at the foreshore park at Lake Jindabyne, a park in Bombala and the playground at Adaminaby Public School! When hatchlings or nestlings fall from the nest, we recommend not to pick them up to take home for rearing. It’s essential (where possible) hatchlings/nestlings be placed back in the nest. If a nest is blown away, it may be... necessary to use a bit of clever know-how and rig up an artificial nest to be securely placed in the tree so the bird parents can continue caring for them (as seen in these photos). Parent birds do a far better job than humans :) At this time of year, you will often see baby birds on the ground - branchlings and fledglings. This is normal young bird behaviour and the birds generally are not abandoned - their parents will be around feeding the young one in preparation for them learning to fly. You will usually see and hear the parents who will be distressed - you are too close to their baby. We recommend you leave them be, unless in certain danger (cats, dogs, road traffic etc). If you’re unsure, please call LAOKO on 6456 1313 for further advice.
