20.01.2022 #SAVEhospo It's time to show support and show up as the hospitality industry struggles The hospitality industry is being hit hard as a result of the COVID-19 o...utbreak and in light of this, I want to encourage Aussies to get behind the hospitality industry by showing up and eating out. Most cafes, restaurants & pubs have applied the necessary social distancing measures to ensure they are fully compliant with the new world. Other industry heavyweights are doing the same around the world with Rene Redzepi of Noma saying "please continue to support those restaurants, cafés, bakeries and food stores that remain open. The people who work there are your friends and neighbours. We are one community." And Adam Reiner of The Restaurant Manifesto saying this: "Restaurants are ALWAYS there for you when you celebrate special occasions birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, engagements, communions, bar mitzvahs, family reunions, graduations, promotions or just friends in town. Please be there for them RIGHT NOW because they need you."It doesn't matter where you are in the world, these messages ring true for all of us. The men and women in this game are the people that are always there for us. They're there every morning to hand over a coffee, every Friday night to pour a glass of wine and for every special event and celebration we throw. These guys are there to put a smile on our faces, and now, they need our help more than ever. Let’s return serve, show support, and SHOW UP, so we can help get them through to the other side. Because if we don't, the reality is that many of the cafes, restaurants, and bars we know and love will go under. Unlike other industries that will receive significant subsidies from the government (airlines, cruises etc), or who are big enough to ride out the storm, small family-run restaurants and cafes will not receive the financial support needed to stay afloat. Unless we as a country support them, cash will dry up, landlords will expect them to continue to pay their hefty high rent and they will be forced to shut their doors. Unfortunately, our dining habits tend to mirror the state of our economy and climate, but I urge all Aussies to break that cycle and get out there to support the families and businesses that need you most at this time. Most cafes and restaurants over the past 48 hours saw their sales drop by 30-50% and sadly this is only going to get worse unless we act. This is an industry that employs over one million people - that's 4% of our country! Closures will impact not only our communities but households and families nationwide too. If businesses start to fade, it's the people in them who will suffer the most. So, here are six things we can do today to help the industry that always supports us: 1) Continue to go out and eat (most businesses are changing the way they operate to ensure they are COVID compliant with extra spacing rules, extra sanitisation and limited capacities.) 2) Think twice before you cancel your booking. Most businesses have now implemented COVID-19 changes to ensure they are compliant. It will break the owner's heart if their covers are slashed in half. 3) Tip generously, if you can. 4) Get takeaway for lunch or dinner but order it direct from the venue - not via Uber Eats or Deliveroo where the venue makes no money. Inject the cash direct to business owners. 5) Buy a gift card for future use. 6) Be nice. The industry is in crisis. The staff are feeling it, the owners are feeling it. Do your bit to lighten the load. #savehospo
