25.01.2022 I went on another workshop yesterday (run by the wonderful & fantastic duo, Remington and Emmett) and, amongst many delightful goodies, finally mastered the art of making bath bombs. They're so pretty and smell devine. I can't wait to try them at home

25.01.2022 I had a fantastic time at a Wild Weeds workshop today, run by Herbalist Pat Collins, Pat Collins Herbalist & Natural Therapies T.H.E Centre Muswellbrook (hosted by Remington and Emmett) learning how to make all sorts of diy healing lotions & potions from common wild herbs & plants. Here we all are infusing plants in oil. Such an interesting day. Hosted by my original soap making teachers Nicki & Cheryl

25.01.2022 I'm very excited as I have been invited by The Barket to participate in their second bar market at the Angel Restuarant in Queenscliff next Sunday, 17th May. I will be one of 10 artisan craft stalls taking part and as well as this there will also be food, drinks and live music. For more info see The Barket's facebook page. Hope to see you there :-)

24.01.2022 How cool is this? Huge slabs of soap for sale (not mine I hasten to add) :-) Visiting a friend in Wollombi yesterday & took the opportunity to pop in to Bare Nature's Kin in nearby Laguna for some natural salt crystal deodorant. She has the most amazing stock of naturally coloured and scented soap (all palm free of course) and, as well as bars, sells entire slabs like these pictured here. Many of them contain locally sourced clays & botanicals. So beautiful & inspiring I had to share x

23.01.2022 Spring is definitely here. The Bush was ablaze with colour this morning when I went for a walk. Boronia, lesser flannel flowers, pink spider flowers, crowea, and various wattles to name a few. Such a beautiful sight!

23.01.2022 This afternoon I'm at The Barket, a social market held at the Angel Restaurant in Queenscliff. I'm one of 10 stalls and it's such a great little bar I didn't know existed before. Will have to come back for a meal & drink sometime

23.01.2022 Hmm, it would appear putting them in the oven to speed up the drying process was the wrong thing to do. Now they look just like last time!

22.01.2022 I've had some Noosa Ruby Sunset Ale in the fridge for a while now, given to me by the wonderful Daryle at Kuluin's Sunshine Brewery, patiently waiting for me to turn it into soap. Well... today's the day. 22.01.2022 After a lot of research I've finally got round to making my first ever batch of liquid soap. Despite the general rule that clarity is the most important quality, I opted for a 5% superfat to provide extra moisturising properties and a much simpler method. Is my soap super clear? No. Is it good for your skin with no unnecessary additives and a lot less complicated than all the books would have you believe? Yes! I'm pretty pleased with the result & would like to say a big thank you to Humblebee & Me for her blog post on how to make liquid soap the easy way and my soapy teachers, Remington and Emmett Handmade Soaps and Body Products Classes, for letting me in on all their trials and tribulations

21.01.2022 Experimenting with fizzy bath melts. These christmas stars are mainly cocoa butter with a smidgen of alkanet infused olive oil for natural colour, though I was after a more purple tone to go with the lavender essential oil I added for scent. There is a sprinkle of epsom salts in them too for magnesium goodness . . . .... . #soapoftheearth #fizzybathmelts #bathmelts #cocoabutterbathmelts #naturalcolor #naturalcolour #naturalcolourants #alkanetroot #handmadewithlove #handmadeinaustralia #handcrafted #relaxinthebath #treatyourskin #timeforabath See more

21.01.2022 Three varieties of my soap are now available for purchase at The Urban Farmacy in Marrickville. Such an awesome shop specialising in farm fresh chemical and pesticide free veggies plus lots of other locally sourced goodies. The owners, Happi & Cath, are super friendly too so be sure to check it out if you're in the area

21.01.2022 Apparently my coffee cinnamon scrub soap has been selling really well at The Urban Farmacy and they don't have much left so here's a fresh batch made today. I'm thinking a dehumidifier might speed up the curing process, especially with the damp weather we've been having in Sydney lately.

21.01.2022 Rosemary, Mint & Lavender Soap. Wake up with a refreshing herbal zing.

20.01.2022 Went to New Directions Australia showroom in Marrickville today for the first time to pick up some soap making goodies. Wow! What an amazing place. I was like a kid in a sweetie shop. Now I know why people have been telling me I have to go there

19.01.2022 Time to make another batch of refreshing mint soap. Using a bar of this in the morning is certain to wake you up with a wonderful blast of fresh scent. Derived only from 100% pure essential oils there are no nasty synthetics here #allnaturalsoap #coldprocess #cpsoap #naturalsoap #essentialoils #claysoap #palmoilfree #palmfree #palmfreesoap #soapcolourednaturally #soapoftheearth #handmadesoap #artisansoap #sunshinecoasthandmade #handmadesunshinecoast #sunshinecoastsoap #mintsoap #greensoap #spirulinasoap #mumprenuer

19.01.2022 Back in Tasmania for a quick visit to see my cuz before christmas and couldn't resist when she suggested doing Cygnet market again on Sunday. Just unpacked and my soaps look like they made it safely

19.01.2022 Drum roll... I made soap! Not only that but it's a new one I've not made before. Scented with lemongrass & rosemary essential oil it's divinely refreshing and I coloured it with Australian yellow clay and an in the pot swirl of healthy green powder (blend of wheat grass, barley grass, spirulina & chlorella). This was Tuesday and I haven't quite finished cutting it up yet but I'm pleased with it. All going well I shall be taking them to Avalon Market Day in a few weeks time ...where I am sharing some stall space with Remington & Emmett, my soapy teachers . . . . . #soap #soapoftheearth #naturalsoap #artisansoap #handmadesoap #coldprocesssoap #handcrafted #supportlocal #northernbeachessoap #australianhandmade #lemongrasssoap #australianyellowclay #colourednaturally #naturalcolour #avalonmarketday #avalonmarketday2016 #remingtonandemmett #treatyourskin See more

19.01.2022 Here's my lemongrass & rosemary bar cut up. Not a bad photo considering I didn't have the time or patience to set up my lightbox. 19.01.2022 My first attempt at a hanger swirl using layers coloured with pink & white clay. I'm pretty pleased with the result though I do say so myself! And the floral scent of lavender, rose geranium & ylang ylang is divine. Not sure what I shall call it yet, summer bouquet, flower shower...?

18.01.2022 Freshly poured "lavender fields" soap. My first in over a year. It's difficult to get a photo of the true colour as it should look more purple than this. I used Brazilian purple clay for the first time but I think I need to source a paler olive oil as the green gives it a brown tinge. . . . .... . #soap #coldprocess #cpsoap #naturalsoap #essentialoils #claysoap #palmoilfree #palmfree #palmfreesoap #soapcolourednaturally #soapoftheearth #handmadesoap #artisansoap #sunshinecoasthandmade #handmadesunshinecoast #sunshinecoastsoap #brazilianpurpleclay #lavendersoap #soapersofinstagram See more

17.01.2022 I have since renamed this one to Rose Hip Soap. The rose hip oil it contains is high in vitamin A and essential fatty acids making it particularly suitable for the more mature skin. French pink clay is also mild and beneficial to extra-sensitive skin. It is scented with Rose Geranium essential oil.

17.01.2022 Second wholesale batch cured, labelled & ready to go to The Urban Farmacy

17.01.2022 Experimenting with photography & how best to display my soaps. This is my new lavender & patchouli soap coloured naturally with alkanet root. Not sure if the hessian backdrop works or not.

17.01.2022 Freshly poured goat milk soap (last night). After prepping all the ingredients throughout the day I jumped into making it as soon as my baby fell asleep. It's the safest time to ensure I'm not disturbed and only took an hour including cleanup! 16.01.2022 I've had bad dandruff of late & decided to use my tea tree neem oil soap on my hair. However, I've read it's necessary to rinse with something acidic after using bar soap to adjust scalp ph and also smooth the hair follicles (which get raised by an alkali). Researching dandruff showed many articles recommending apple cider vinegar so I decided to give it a go for double benefits. I've been using a 50:50 ACV to water ratio, leaving it in while I wash the rest of myself before ...rinsing. Wow! The first time I used it I couldn't believe the silky soft feeling of my hair, like it had been conditioned, instead of the squeaky clean feeling after just using soap. It also seems to do a good job of stripping the dandruff, for a few days at least. I'll keep using it to see if it cures it completely, but even if it doesn't I'm going to keep using it. My hair is very short at the moment after cutting off my dreads so I don't brush it, but if I decide to grow it longer then I think this is a great natural alternative to commercial conditioner I'd be very interested to hear about anyone else's experiences with using vinegar or other rinses instead of conditioner.

16.01.2022 The first cut of my Noosa Ruby sunset ale soap. The aroma profile for this ale is chocolate cola, berry and stone fruits. However, there are no essential oils of stone fruits or berry so I've gone with the other description of grandma's christmas cake instead. Blending cinnamon, the vanilla notes of benzoin and sweet orange has turned out quite well I think. . . . .... . #soap #coldprocess #cpsoap #naturalsoap #essentialoils #allnaturalsoap #claysoap #palmoilfree #palmfree #palmfreesoap #soapcolourednaturally #soapoftheearth #handmadesoap #artisansoap #sunshinecoasthandmade #handmadesunshinecoast #sunshinecoastsoap #sunshinebrewery #beersoap #noosarubysunsetale #sunshinebrewerysoap See more

16.01.2022 I tried my hand at dipping my own beeswax candle today at the North Shore Beekeepers Association monthly field day. I found the process very therapeutic but it does take patience. The end result is a beautiful honey scented and coloured taper candle made the old fashioned way

15.01.2022 I'm so happy, I got my very first Etsy order last week and have just received my first review. It's lovely and I'm so pleased my first customer is happy with their purchase. I'm sure this feeling will be very familiar with those of you out there that also sell your own handcrafted items. I still haven't got round to setting up my website yet and decided to open up my Etsy shop a while back in the mean time. However, I never marketed it or advertised it in any way because I on...ly had a few of my soaps that I'd managed to take decent photographs of. 13.01.2022 I've had a busy week with friends visiting which has been lovely. It means, however, I've only just got round to photographing the cut mint soap. 13.01.2022 I have been very quiet here recently as far as posts & soapmaking goes & here is the reason. My daughter Hazel, since her birth in July, has completely & rightly so consumed my time However, I feel the 4th trimester has now come to an end and I am ready to start incorporating other things into our day. Hazel is starting to spend more time in self-directed play as she is beginning to roll, clutch & explore toys so I feel a new soap batch is possible. Watch this space... This beautiful photo is one of many, taken at 9 weeks by the amazing & talented Courtney, of @courtneygoldphotography

13.01.2022 Extinction really is not an option. I just pledged $100 from my Avalon Market Day takings to @devil_ark via their new crowd funding project: https://pozible.com/project/help-save-the-tasmanian-devil They need our help to raise $375,000 to enable them to undertake Stage 1 of their 2020 goal to double the size of the Ark. These little dudes have found a special place in my heart since my first visit to Tasmania. 13.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago I flew to Tasmania to visit my cousin. She makes delicious jams and chutneys and sells them at local markets so I took my soap with me and we did Cygnet market together. This was my first market stall and I enjoyed it so much. I hope to do more around Sydney in the new year :-)

12.01.2022 Wrapping up some soaps to send to friends. I hope they like my selection

11.01.2022 After having some issues with my beer soap going lumpy (or ricing as I discovered it's called after a spot of googling) I had another go with some Elsie The Milk Stout from Batch Brewing Company yesterday. Combining the oils & lye at a higher temperature seemed to do the trick so I can't wait to cut this later and find out.

11.01.2022 I finally managed to get down to the Sunshine Brewery at Kuluin last weekend to drop off the soap I made using their Noosa Ruby Sunset ale. It's now for sale there, all be it in very limited supply at the moment. What a great excuse to go and sample some of their amazing craft beers . . . .... . #soap #coldprocess #cpsoap #naturalsoap #essentialoils #claysoap #palmoilfree #palmfree #palmfreesoap #soapoftheearth #handmadesoap #artisansoap #sunshinecoasthandmade #handmadesunshinecoast #sunshinecoastsoap #claysoap #sunshinebrewery #beersoap #noosarubysunsetale #sunshinebrewerysoap See more

11.01.2022 I made a new soap; mint, lavender & rosemary with mint tea to add a green tinge. The colour wasn't quite what I was expecting but will be interesting to see what it looks like after 6 weeks of curing!

10.01.2022 I was going to spend Australia day making more soap but, after picking up a load of juicy plums from a by-the-side-of-the-road farmers shop on the way to Wisemans Ferry yesterday, I decided to try my hand at plum jam. I've never made jam before and with the help of my mother-in-law @JoyceBrown though I say so myself, it's blooming delicious!

09.01.2022 A classic bar left unscented for simplicity. I originally made this at the request of my sister-in-law, Libby, hence the name. And I found this lovely hand crocheted cotton wash cloth at the @sunshinecoastcollectivemarkets yesterday, made by TwoCents Doily Art It makes the perfect pairing I think . . . .... . #soap #coldprocess #cpsoap #naturalsoap #palmoilfree #palmfree #palmfreesoap #soapcolourednaturally #soapoftheearth #handmadesoap #artisansoap #sunshinecoasthandmade #handmadesunshinecoast #sunshinecoastsoap #goatmilksoap #unscentedsoap #goatsmilksoap #simplynude #simplynaturalsoap See more

08.01.2022 Yesterday I tried out a recipe for whipped shealoe body butter using aloe vera from my garden. The inspiration for this came from putting lovely and natural but standard body moisturiser on my legs straight after epilating. Oww! I think it was the essential oils that stung like a b!*@h. I'm hoping shea butter, aloe vera & some calendula infused almond oil will be a lot more soothing

08.01.2022 Made another batch of lemon eucalyptus (lemon scented gum) soap yesterday but tried using saffron to colour instead of the annatto oil I used previously. Even using 75% less than my last failed batch using saffron (it was so strong the suds were bright yellow) it's still very dark: only 5g of saffron to 2050g oils! I think I'll try 2g next time.

08.01.2022 With wanting to take my soap to the next level I thought it was time to look at my branding and call in a professional. So I enlisted the help of my friend Emma from @emepic (an intuitive designer) to come up with this amazing logo for me. I think you'll agree it looks a little bit special. 08.01.2022 What's going on here then? A few weeks ago I found myself at Batch Brewing Company in Marrickville discussing beer soap (as well as having a good old sample of their fine craft beers of course) and they were kind enough to send me away with some complimentary beers to experiment with. So I'm finally getting around to preparing some Zonn White IPA. It looks a bit like sacrilege but before it gets mixed with the lye it's important to remove the gas. I will also freeze it overnight. Luckily there was exactly the right amount of beer in one bottle to make 2 half batches, to the gram! Unlucky for me there was none leftover for tasting! I have 2 more beers to use and I'm going to be experimenting with different additives: hop pellets, leftover malts and complimentary essential oils, so watch this space

07.01.2022 There's a bit of a knack to making 100% milk soap without burning it. I like to measure out my milk in advance and freeze it in one lump. This way, when I slowly start adding the sodium hydroxide, it doesn't melt too quickly and keeps the solution below 30. I didn't let mine go above 25 today as this was when I started to see the lye change colour. It will start to go a shade of lemon first, then to bright fluro yellow & finally to an intense orange if it gets really hot. The first batch I ever made went orange. I still continued to make the soap and it was usable but ended up a dark tan colour instead of nice and creamy. Today's batch of goats milk soap is my creamiest yet I think, going to show that practice can make perfect!

07.01.2022 I have been very quiet on the soap front of late & this bar I made a while ago may give you a clue as to why. It's an unscented, extra mild soap made with soothing calendula infusions and smoothly shaped especially for babies. Of course, it's also perfect for adults with sensitive skin or who simply prefer no added scent. It's my intention to create a baby range which can be prettily packaged for baby shower gifts etc. so watch this space

07.01.2022 I've made it to Avalon Market Day, sharing some stall space with my soapy teachers @remingtonemmett. I love this annual market, so many stalls and wonderful crafty people. 06.01.2022 After injuring my hand yesterday whilst stupidly trying to roll a log (far too big for me to manage safely on my own) I decided it's high time to make some comfrey balm for such things

05.01.2022 And here are the freshly cut bars.

05.01.2022 Here's a photo of the natural first aid kit we made on the weeds workshop a couple of weeks ago with Pat Collins Herbalist & Natural Therapies T.H.E Centre Muswellbrook. So many amazing herbal goodies such as healing cream, phytolacca ointment, sage capsules, calendula tincture, mullein oil. Amazing! Hosted by Remington and Emmett.

05.01.2022 Alkanet infused olive oil and indigo infused lye ready to make a batch of purple lavender fields soap & a batch of blue lavender eucalyptus soap. Colouring soap naturally is satisfying but can also be very surprising as the results are not always what you would expect My last batch of indigo soap (powder added at trace) produced a very speckled soap with a blue lather so I'm hoping infusing the lye will work better!

05.01.2022 Australian black clay is rich in beneficial minerals reputed to cleanse, detoxify, tone and nourish the skin. And, being sourced right here in Australia, how could I resist using it in my soap? Scented with the licorice smelling anise and spearmint essential oils, I can't wait to cut up this batch and get it on the curing rack. . . . .... . #soapoftheearth #handmadesoap #artisansoap #botanicalsoap #naturalsoap #coldprocess #cpsoap #essentialoils #claysoap #palmoilfree #palmfree #palmfreesoap #soapcolourednaturally #sunshinecoasthandmade #handmadesunshinecoast #sunshinecoastsoap #blackclaysoap #australianblackclay #licoricesoap See more

04.01.2022 Now that they're cut up the green specks of fresh rosemary show up nicely I think :-)

04.01.2022 I've had some rendered pork lard sitting in the fridge for a while now & been wondering what to do with it. I can't remember which meal it came from (some sort of pork obviously & free range in case anyone's wondering) but it was just leftover & it seemed wasteful to throw it out. It's such a lovely white & has almost no scent so today I decided to try using it in a soap. It makes up 30% of the oils & I'm very excited to try it as it's making use of an animal part that would otherwise probably have been discarded

04.01.2022 Just made another small batch of porter soap using Silent Knight Porter from Modus Operandi Brewing Co. The first test batch I made back in Feb turned out perfectly but when I tried to make another large batch a while ago it traced so quickly it ended up with pale spots all the way through where blobs of soap had seized. It's ok to use, just doesn't look great! So this time I went back to a half batch and stirred the porter lye into the oils manually instead of using the stick blender (i can only think this is what I did the 1st time but forgot). It still reached trace quickly & I probably should have poured it into the mould earlier but fingers crossed it will be ok this time. Now time for a schooner of porter me thinks

04.01.2022 After recently developing a taste for stout I decided to make some stout soap. And what better stout to use than some Silent Knight Porter from my very local brewery, Modus Operandi Brewing Co., in Mona Vale. I purchased a 2L growler (for tasting as well as soap making of course) & the head brewer was kind enough to give me some roasted barley to decorate the top with :-)

04.01.2022 So it's now 2018 and, after 18 months of being a full time mum and moving from Sydney to QLD's Sunshine Coast back in June, I'm thinking it's time to start making soap again . . . .... . #soap #coldprocess #naturalsoap #essentialoils #claysoap #xeoliteclay #palmoilfree #palmfree #palmfreesoap #soapcolourednaturally #soapoftheearth #handmadesoap #artisansoap #sunshinecoasthandmade #handmadesunshinecoast #sunshinecoastsoap See more

04.01.2022 Summertime Lime soap. My current favourite & perfect for a late summer retreat in the bush. Essential oils of lime, lavender & a smidge of patchouli with green tea & lime peel for natural colour & texture.

03.01.2022 Cut up and now curing I'm quite pleased with my new eucalyptus & lavender soap. This was an experiment using indigo powder added directly at trace to give a natural blue colour. The instructions advised infusing the indigo powder in the oil to avoid a speckled look but I was impatient and wanted to try the quick method first! As the cutting knife passed through the soap it caused the tiny specks of undissolved powder to bleed and look a bit like stone washed denim And it smells amazing

03.01.2022 My second attempt at bath bombs and so far so good. The real trick is getting the right amount of water as too much causes the fizz reaction to keep going and they splurge all over the place (what happened the first time), losing their shape and their fizz. Not enough water and they will not hold together! These are scented with lime eo and coloured with my own home produced chlorophyll

03.01.2022 These colours remind me of neopolitan ice cream However, they're goats milk, rose clay and cinnamon coffee scrub soaps especially for The Urban Farmacy

01.01.2022 A few weeks ago I experimented with making a carrot soap using a mixture of carrot water (from steaming the carrots) & carrot puree. Carrots are purportedly great for the skin due to the beta-carotene content so I left these bars unscented, making them extra mild for babies & those with skin sensitivities. I love the colour the carrots have imparted although, after a few weeks in the open to cure, the tops have started to fade a little.
