22.01.2022 Fathers Day is about 10 days away and whats not a better time to reflect on our relationships with our children and our own dads. Perhaps we enter parenthood thinking we'd be "the teacher", but often find ourselves as "the student", learning from how we see ourselves reflected in their eyes, and striving to be better than we were before. We're sharing some photos and stories from dads in our network over the next week or so, kicking of with Sonny from @the_na_guys pictured he...re with his gorgeous family cheers mate! "Being a dad is one of the reasons I gave the drink away. My last drink was in November (2019) and I had to take the kids to sport the following day. I was dry wretching in the car park before we entered. It was embarrassing and I was ashamed. I made a vow there and then I didn’t want to feel like that again. Staying off the drink has meant I’m way more present in everything they do. 21.01.2022 [Sobah's GM Lozen reflects on Father's Day]... I've enjoyed sharing the Dad stories from some of the awesome men in our network this past fortnight. I'm immensely proud of all the dads who make the natural sacrifices needed to be the best dad to their kids that they can be, whatever that means to them. I think ultimately we all want Bluey's dad Bandit as our Dad, a dad who will do anything to keep his kids safe and to make them happy, even if that means fairy dancing around a... mailbox in front of the neighbourhood. Pictured is myself as a 4 year old with my little sister and our dad taken sometime in the year before "the accident"... while I dont remember this photo being taken, I was old enough to have a wonderful sense of who my Dad was and that he loved me. He was fun, cuddly, taught me to ride bikes and horses, introduced me to music and bought me my first cassette Madonna's Material Girl, he made me feel special. But I was young enough not to know about his drinking problem and the risks he was taking. Like many country men, he was a heavy drinker and prone to getting behind the wheel drunk. On Xmas eve 1985 he had a near fatal crash and subsequently acquired brain damage that impaired him for the rest of his life. He was not the same Dad I knew and I struggled with not having a "normal" Dad for most of my life. I had an epiphany in my late teens, this is as good as it was going to get so I should appreciate the different relationship I have with my Dad. As time went on, it got better. When I became a mother I recognised that, while he couldn't do the things for me that a "normal" dad may have been able to do, he was still proud of me. I am grateful for the extra time we had. He passed away suddenly two days after Father's Day in 2013... My Dad was 34 when he had the accident, ironically the same age my husband Clinton was when he quit drinking for good. I wonder if my Dad would have changed if he'd had another chance, if he'd have smartened up and bettered himself, if not for his own sake but for ours.

20.01.2022 Oh, the amount of times we were told we'd go broke if we launched a non-alcoholic beer in Australia... but with about 25% of Australians being non-drinkers, we knew there had to be others like us who wanted a great tasting beer without the booze. While the UK and USA markets were growing in NA offerings, there was a gapping hole in the market for a decent adult tasting non-alcoholic beverage. Back in 2016, we sprung upon the idea to make our own and hoped to make a differenc...e in what choices punters had both across the bar and at home. The past few months has seen our category grow and the industry take us more seriously. Becoming a dad is one of the most amazing, rewarding and challenging experiences of a lifetime. It has made me slow down and appreciate the simpler things, like taking a casual stroll along the river, sitting in the park and watching the world go by or chasing garbage trucks down the street for e...ntertainment. Ever since Freddie joined our family, he’s had nothing but a positive influence on my life! In wanting to be a better role model and healthier person, I have made some drastic life changes, including, ditching the booze, changing my diet and getting more psychically active. Nothing makes me happier than taking our boards/bikes out to the local park and zooming around for hours. Clinton Schultz, is an Aboriginal psychologist and founder of the alcohol-free brand, Sobah Beer. Clinton’s work sits at the intersection of sobriety, social justice, and psychology, and he and his wife Lozen created Sobah in part to raise cultural awareness and promote the Aboriginal arts, language and history.... As well as his own journey to sobriety which was sparked by his young son asking him if he would please stop drinking silly drink we discuss why binge drinking and alcoholism are so prevalent in nations with a colonialist past, and how booze is often used to medicate unhealed intergenerational trauma.
