20.01.2022 After many discussions with researchers at the Australian National University's National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health and Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute and with Jack Caldwell and family members, the African Research Fellowship was launched to continue the tradition of research into the determinants for population health in Africa. I am very pleased that the first round attracted a very strong field and has been awarded to Dr Makandwe Nyirenda from the Africa Centre for Health & Population Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. His work on the health and well-being of older people in the context of a very high HIV has many echos of Jack's interest in how family institutions are affected by diseases such as HIV/AIDS. http://nceph.anu.edu.au//announcing-first-john-c-caldwell-

19.01.2022 At the Australian National University I had the privilege of studying under Jack Caldwell, a powerhouse of a demographer with an insatiable appetite for knowledge. In late 2012 I accepted an invitation to chair a committee supporting an endowment fund in his honour. The first task was to explain his intellectual and personal legacy in the words of students and colleagues who knew him best. The result was this booklet. http://nceph.anu.edu.au//professor-john-c-jack-caldwell-re I would love to hear from other people who know Jack and would like to share their reflections.

18.01.2022 Just sent out invitations to the first batch of businesses who have apprentices and trainees through ATC Midwest. This local NGO wanted to know what their clients thought of their services. We designed a survey that we put up into Survey Monkey. The Royal Life Saving call centre who we use for all of our phone surveys will be following up on people who do not respond. And then we will get data! My fingers are already tingling.

15.01.2022 Boarding the flight to Melbourne. I had to leave Geraldton at 3am to be here but it will be worth it. I'll be attending the Australasian Evaluation conference. Expecting to meet great people and drink terrific coffee.

15.01.2022 New projects getting underway. I am especially happy to be working with Carina Calzoni from Clear Horizon. I am contributing on an important project looking at the impact of the Regional Grants Scheme on the beautiful Southwest of Western Australian. How lucky am I?!

12.01.2022 After five months, I finally took the 15 minutes needed to back up my laptop. I feel safe again. What next? Maybe updating our webpage.

07.01.2022 This week Peter and I presented on regional demography at the Mid West Development Commission. I've uploaded the slides on slideshare. Have a look. http://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/20951957

04.01.2022 I spoke on Triple J's Hack program last week about young rural women's limited opportunities. The program was named Get out or Get Knocked Up. I'll post a link if I find one.

03.01.2022 My blog is up and running again. This time I take on the age-old problem of scare-mongering about declining fertility rates in this post http://wp.me/p1H3z3-iB. Thanks to Demotrends for letting cross-post.

02.01.2022 Social Dimensions in Bunbury and the south west this week learning about their services and regional development programs. One treat has been walking into Bunbury along the river.

01.01.2022 My post on early childbearing in rural Australia has been picked up by the Sydney Morning Herald! I'm glad this issue is getting traction. So many young women have so few opportunities. http://www.socialdimensions.com.au/an-increase-in-teenaged/
