25.01.2022 Solidarity with staff at Murdoch uni! We encourage staff to vote no this Friday in the proposed variation to the enterprise agreement. Staff shouldn't have to face pay cuts. This will do nothing to protect jobs. Instead it aims to blackmail staff into supporting the undermining of their pay and conditions.

25.01.2022 Thanks to the over 160 people who joined us for Socialism Perth 2020 this weekend. The conference attempted to grapple with the current period of overlapping po...litical, social and economic crises that the working class and oppressed are facing the brunt of. The capitalist class are willing to sacrifice workers and the oppressed to COVID, to keep profits flowing and the economy open. The climate crisis is wreaking havoc, as historic wildfires, orange skies and smoke become a part of the new normal. While healthcare workers fight COVID in underfunded hospitals, militarised police are well prepared to brutalise protesters, murder people of colour and defend the far right. These issues were introduced in our opening panel on crisis capitalism, and continued across sessions on the rise of authoritarianism, police abolition, and the COVID crisis. These conditions are producing death and destruction. But they’re also creating mass resistance, from Lebanon, Belarus, to the centre of global capitalism, the United States. We heard from radicals on the frontlines of this resistance. At the closing panel on Sunday, Khury Petersen-Smith, Boston-based, Black socialist discussed heroic resistance across the US to racist police violence. Khury celebrated the mass defiant resistance in places like Portland, New York and Minneapolis. But he also highlighted the transformative process happening in every neighborhood where people are organising resistance and discussing the police, racism and capitalism. We heard from radicals from the last major upsurge, the 60s/70s. Gumbainggir radical Gary Foley spoke on the Black Power movement in Australia which he was central to. US socialist Joel Geier spoke on the civil rights movement, student radicalisation and Black Power struggle, which he was deeply involved in. The discussions on resistance around the world and historically aimed to guide our approach to organising in Australia today. Police racism, state repression, inequality and exploitation are central to Australian capitalism and need to be opposed here. As Joel Geier concluded, Our job is to build something now to prepare for the ongoing radicalisations. You've got to decide for your whole life, what side are you on?

24.01.2022 Stonewall means fightback! Get along to the meeting next Wednesday - A History of Gay Radicalism & Rebellion

24.01.2022 194 days later and no one has been charged with the murder of Breonna Taylor. She was only 26 when Louisville police raided the house where she was sleeping..., looking for someone who did not live there, and shot her dead. Police fired at least 20 shots, 5 of which hit Taylor and the rest passed into other apartments. Taylor was a healthcare worker on the frontlines as an EMT, saving lives during this pandemic. Police raided the house without knocking and killed her, even though she was unarmed and innocent. Not only were they at the wrong home, but the person they were looking for was also already in police custody. Today, a grand jury indicted one of the police officers for wanton endangerment, the two other officers who fired shots were not charged. #SayHerName #Justice4Breonna See more

22.01.2022 Join us for the 2nd day of Socialism Conference Perth at the UWA maths bloc on NOW

21.01.2022 NO PRIDE ON A DEAD PLANET LGBTI rights have only ever been won through defiant, mass mobilisations. The LGBTI movement was started by riots, like ...those in Stonewall in 1969. Uni Students For Climate Justice think that tradition of rebellion needs to continue. Corporations have tried to sanitise this history, and used Pride Parades as PR branding to cover for underpaying workers, exploiting other countries, and destroying the planet. In Perth, Woodside now sponsors the annual Pride Parade. This is the same corporation that is massively expanding fossil fuel extraction for more profits. We are endorsing Put the Protest Back in Pride! because we think these corporations have no interest in fighting for a better world. Instead, we need more activists that can continue to organise mass resistance to fight against the system.

19.01.2022 The anti-racist rebellion which exploded across the US in response to the horrific murder of George Floyd is historic. It’s encompassed demands against economic... inequality, state repression and underfunded social services, as well as justice for George Floyd. The protesters have withstood repression, utilising radical mass tactics, in some case reminiscent of the Hong Kong uprising. Socialism conference features debates that have arisen out of the movement - with sessions on the police abolition and debates on identity politics, reductionism and Marxism. We're incredibly lucky to hear from Black US socialist Khury Petersen-Smith on the closing panel - rebellion and revolution in the era of the pandemic, where he'll discussing the US uprising from his own experiences. We'll also draw from the radical history of Black resistance. A highlight of this will be hearing from Gary Foley, a key leader in the Aboriginal Tent Embassy of 1972 and longtime Aboriginal radical who will be speaking on Black Power in Australia.

18.01.2022 On this day, 4th of December 1969, the leading Black Panther Fred Hampton was assassinated in his sleep by the FBI. Hampton was betrayed by William O’Neal, his ...bodyguard and the Panthers’ head of security, an FBI informant who drugged Hampton's coffee in preparation for the raid. After the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, the virulently anti-communist FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover feared the rise of a new Black Messiah and was determined to wipe out the Black Panthers’ leadership, of whom Hampton was the most impressive. In one of his last speeches Hampton spelled out his vision for the Black Panthers: We don’t think you fight fire with fire best; we think you fight fire with water best. We’re going to fight racism not with racism, but we’re going to fight with solidarity. We say we’re not going to fight capitalism with Black capitalism, but we’re going to fight it with socialism ... We’re going to fight their reactions with all of us people getting together and having an international proletarian revolution..
