23.01.2022 #SocialJusticeStatement2020 A properly functioning mental health system requires improved and prioritised services for people with serious, complex, enduring conditions.

21.01.2022 #SocialJusticeStatement2020 "National bodies representing psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors and other mental health professionals have repeatedly condemned the disastrous mental health impact of detention. We join their call for an end to prolonged inhumane detention and for the the transfer of high-risk groups including children and people with mental ill-health to care in the Australian community." 15.01.2022 Perhaps you are familiar with the iconic photograph of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam pouring soil through Vincent Lingiaris hand when leasehold title for Daguragu (known as Wattie Creek) was transferred to the Gurindji people on 16 August 1975? There is still a long way to go in the struggle for land rights. https://socialjustice.catholic.org.au//1975-re/2020-08-16/

13.01.2022 As we enter 2021 with a sense of hope and ‘rebirth’ we ask that, for the first time in post-colonial history, Australians stand together to lift one another up. Stand alongside the Traditional Custodian. Stand alongside the migrant striving for a better life. Stand alongside the grandmother that has lived through so much. We are much stronger, and much better when we are together. 2021 Australia Day Reflection, NATSICC.

13.01.2022 Today we remember the humanitarian action of Captain Arne Rinnan and the need to work towards more just and compassionate asylum policy in Australia. In August 2001 a small Indonesian fishing boat carrying asylum seekers became stranded in international waters approximately 140 kilometres from Christmas Island. The 433 asylum seekers were rescued by the Norwegian freighter MV Tampa on 26 August. When some of the asylum seekers, who were mainly Hazaras fleeing Afghanistan, threatened to commit suicide if returned to Indonesia, Captain Arne Rinnan set course for Christmas Island. https://socialjustice.catholic.org.au//2001-re/2020-08-26/

12.01.2022 #SocialJusticeStatement2020 To address the 'missing middle' in mental health care, we need coordinated person-centred care from early intervention to acute care and aftercare across clinical, community mental health and housing, social services and charities.

09.01.2022 Bishop Vincent Long, Chair of the Bishops Commission for Social Justice, Mission and Service reflects on mental health challenges in a message for Social Justice Sunday (30 August). He draws attention to the Social Justice Statement 2020-21, To Live Life to the Full: Mental health in Australia today.
09.01.2022 #SocialJusticeStatement2020 We need improved mental health services (including face-to-face) for rural and remote communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and for those who are homeless or incarcerated.
09.01.2022 #SocialJusticeStatement2020 "Mental illness is both a cause and a consequence of homelessness. The inability to negotiate rental markets or the supported accommodation systems, with a lack of other community support, puts people at high risk. And being homeless, living in poverty, with all of the uncertainties and fear of harm and violence is a cause of high levels of psychological distress." Australian Catholic Bishops Conference
09.01.2022 Bishop Terry Brady and Dr Sandie Cornish are signatories to this important statement.

08.01.2022 On Monday, are young Catholic Church worker, Rupinus Tigau, was shot dead by members of the Indonesian security forces in the village of Jalae in Intan Jaya in ...the Highlands of West PAPUA. The soldiers were conducting a sweeping operation, looking for members of the armed resistance. Rupinus was not a member of the armed resistance. He approached the soldiers peacefully and unarmed. He asked them what they were doing and urged them to act calmly. At least one of the soldiers pointed a gun at him and he responded by putting his arms up in the air in submission. He was shot dead. Another young man was shot and injured. We are told that the security forces burned down a number of homes in the village. People in the village have fled to the forest because they are very afraid. This sort of outrageous violence is not uncommon. The people of West PAPUA have been subjected to violence at the hands of Indonesian security forces for decades. As an Australian, I am deeply concerned that the Australian Government continues to allow our soldiers and police to train, support and work with Indonesian soldiers and police without making them accountable for this sort of abuse. Today I will begin 40 days of fasting and prayer for the people of West PAPUA and the Pacific. This time of fasting and prayer has been called for by the Pacific Conference of Churches. The people of West PAPUA have been subjected to violence and racism for too long. This must stop. Please join me. See more
08.01.2022 Thank you Mark Copland for this timely reflection. Whether is it Victorians or young people or some other 'other', can we give the scapegoating a rest?
07.01.2022 Today is Social Justice Sunday. This year's Social Justice Statement from the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference encourages faith communities, governments a...nd each one of us to make mental health a priority. The profound impact of COVID-19 has starkly revealed and reinforced the need for our society to do better in how we care for each other at all times. Addressing mental ill-health is a fundamental aspect of that care. Understanding its effects on individuals and our community helps us to become more aware of those who need our support and to do something about it. 05.01.2022 #SocialJusticeStatement2020 We can promote good mental health by addressing the social determinants of mental ill-health.
05.01.2022 "Social and economic disadvantage is a cause of higher levels of mental ill-health among our Indigenous sisters and brothers.Behind this disadvantage lies the history of dispossession, which is itself the cause of inter-generational trauma." #SocialJusticeStatement2020
