25.01.2022 The children at North Fremantle SOEL have been learning The Rainbow Song in both English and Auslan. As the children have explored rainbows, they have reflected on how happy they make them feel. Rainbows have become a message of love and hope for the Kui and Clontarf children. Rainbows have been drawn on footpaths, hung in windows and even given as Mothers Day gifts.
25.01.2022 Como's 3-Year-Old Kindy Room, Poppy, has been introduced to wirework. The responsiveness of the wire allows the children to think with their hands. These thoughts can manifest in kinks and bends, or the wire can simply straighten out as the child revises their creative vision. Come take a tour at our Como SOEL centre to learn more about the SOEL Way. https://www.soel.wa.edu.au/como-child-care/

24.01.2022 The toddlers in Comos Talbot room have been exploring powder paint as a means of connection between one another. By playfully painting on each others hands, and feeling it move from finger to finger, the children learn how their actions with paint affect others. SOEL aims to provide toddlers with environments that value and support their developing skills. Want to check out Como SOELs toddler rooms? 22.01.2022 'Connecting to Nature, Land and Country' investigation is an inquiry-led play-based investigation that the children have been initiating across all our centres. The long-term research invites children, educators and families to connect to Country with all their senses and respect it. Previously we've explored how our toddlers at West Leederville SOEL have been tackling it. Now take a look at what our Kindy rooms have been up to.
21.01.2022 Through the studios exploration of narrative and literacy at West Leederville SOEL, the story of Hoot and Hoot-a-bell has emerged. Weve been exploring this story that the children have created on our Instagram page, go check it out! https://www.instagram.com/soel_perth/
21.01.2022 Como SOELs Studio has adapted beautifully to these uncertain times. They have continued the SOEL Programme while they have been covering in the childrens rooms for the past few months. The Studio has continued their skilling, specifically in watercolour, pipette use, powder paints and wire-work. It has also involved expanding on the older childrens literacy using a VAKT approach. Complimenting this is the Connections to Land investigation that the Studio has been working with the children to implement. You can read more about this year-long investigation on some of our previous Facebook posts. Would you like to learn more about SOELs approach to childcare? 18.01.2022 Como open day today until 12, come and see what makes us great!
18.01.2022 I have found that parents and caregivers often ask for advice about training their child to go to the toilet. I feel the need to write this guide to help people understand toilet learning as opposed to toilet training as a best practice model. Christopher Cross, SOEL Educator Read more about toilet learning on the blog https://www.soel.wa.edu.au/toilet-learning-guide/
17.01.2022 Learning consists of three almost simultaneous processes. One acquiring new information, two transforming knowledge to fit new tasks and three checking that the way knowledge is manipulated is suitable for the task. Keeping this in mind, our babies in Como's Baldwin Room have been exploring the reflective properties of mirrors. They have been using powder paint and man-made found items to expand on their knowledge and experiences with mirrors. Looking to learn more about Como SOEL's baby rooms? 17.01.2022 We would like to say thank you. Without you, our amazing Managers, Educators, Support Staff and Pedagogy and Training Team, we COULD NOT be who we are today. We hope that the activities organised by your Managers this week act as a small token of our gratitude for all of your hard work, day after day, especially in the mess that is 2020.... To all of you who have been here for years, Thank You. To all of you who joined us last year, Thank You. And to those who have just started their SOEL journey, welcome aboard, you've made a great choice. #lovemyece #earlychildhoodeducatorsday #soel_perth
16.01.2022 SOEL utilises the Reggio Emilia Approach in our Child Care Centres. Loris Malaguzzi collaborated with educators in Reggio preschools to develop the "Reggio Emilia Approach" to education. Malaguzzi tirelessly promoted an innovative philosophy of education that would give value to the wealth of potentials and resources of all the children, as expressed in the concept of the "hundred languages of children". This global educational project has inspired other schools all over the world. If you would like to learn more about the Reggio Emilia Approach visit our website: https://www.soel.wa.edu.au/reggio-emilia-philosophy
16.01.2022 Como SOEL Developing a sense of "place" for the children and educators in Como has been the focus since the centre opened in January. Inviting the children to become more attuned to the natural treasures and life within their gardens. The song "Wanjoo" by Noongar Artist Gina Williams has become part of their morning routine as a way of acknowledging and welcoming the "Beautiful and strong kordah (friends)" from many places.

12.01.2022 We don't believe children need to have their time occupied by pointless tasks. How do we put this into practice? If you look back at our previous posts during Reconciliation Week, you can see that the children have not been doing random tasks for the sake of it. The children have been using their long-term research project 'Connecting to Nature, Land and Country' to connect to Country with all their senses and respect it. The investigation honours the Aboriginal way of knowing and being. The investigation, however, does not stop at the end of Reconciliation Week because we are not merely occupying their time. The children are strong, capable, and resilient researchers. They will continue to explore themselves and their environment using their research project as a focusing lens.

09.01.2022 The toddlers in Como's Throssell room have been exploring a curious berry plant in their garden. Using various "languages" from playdough to water, paint to mark-making the children have been able to examine the sensate-nature of these berries. The re-appropriation of found-materials has allowed the children to think more broadly about the plants in their environment; not just as incidental markers in their garden but as wondrous things, full of potential. 09.01.2022 Here at the Schools of Early Learning, we are focused on the journey, not necessarily the destination. This translates into our practice in a multitude of different ways. One element of this is our mindful paint mixing, this process occurring before we even begin painting. To read more about this and how to apply it in your own homes head over to the SOEL Blog. https://www.soel.wa.edu.au/mixing-powder-paint-art-activit/

03.01.2022 North Perth SOEL The children and educators make connections from the Land on which they stand by developing a relationship with water and clay. The book "In the Deep Red Desert' by Angie Lionetto- Civa reveals the interactions between Australian desert life, and it's vibrant red earth. As part of this investigation, the children began to role play, using their hands and found objects to enact grubs burying themselves in the dirt and echidna's scratching for ants. The Painting 'Worm Dreaming' - by Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri has been a focus to extend the children's interest in the movement of worms found during their encounters with the North Perth Community Garden.
02.01.2022 The babies in Comos Bickley Room have been exploring powder paint with man-made found items and mirrors. Natural, found and recycled materials complemented by carefully chosen educational resources enable children to develop their understandings of the world and make meaning of their observations and relationships. 01.01.2022 With this years cold and flu season fast approaching we are discussing what this means for child care centres on the SOEL blog. Read more https://www.soel.wa.edu.au/child-care-health-and-developme/ "This year we are well-placed as a community to manage Colds and Flus. This is due to increased awareness that consistent handwashing helps minimise transmissions from one person to another... From a young age, SOEL children are supported by educators to exercise their own sense of agency by washing their hands independently. Our children become proper hand washers through positive reinforcement, peer modelling and consistent repetition of all routines involved."
01.01.2022 National Reconciliation Week happened at the beginning of this month. We celebrated by sharing some photos from the children's long term investigation 'Connecting to Nature, Land and Country'. This investigation is an inquiry-led play-based investigation that the children have been initiating across all our centres. The investigation honours Aboriginal ways of knowing and being and has had the children immersed in the rhythm and colour of the Noongar seasons, Stories, music and art forms. A part of this investigation has been to integrate an acknowledgement of country into the children's daily routines. As the children have gained confidence with the acknowledgement, their understanding of the action deepens.
01.01.2022 During the beginning of the year, Como SOEL had some exciting visitors staying! They started off as eggs, and after incubating at Como SOEL, they turned into baby chickens. The inquiry allowed the children to further their development of the theory of mind as they interact not only with each other but other creatures within their environment. As the children petted and held the newly hatched chicks, educators prompted them to think about what their gestures, movements and sounds might signify. Are they scared? How do they feel? Do you ever feel like that? were a few of the questions the educators asked the children.
