23.01.2022 Our team in Smithfield walked into the site this week to enormous photographic prints of their faces, high on the factory walls. This was to make visible to the team how much we value them and what they bring. The photos are a beautiful and authentic capture of our diverse team and their personalities. We recently worked with a photographer Tomasz Machnik from Flashpoint Labs, engaged by Westpac Foundation. As Tomasz met and got to know our Smithfield team, and learned m...ore about what we do, he proposed the idea. Tomasz then worked pro bono over the long weekend to co-ordinate the installation with Joe Rasmussen our NSW Soft Landing Manager and Dani Tuazon our Community Resources Technical Officer, and of a scale requiring forklifts to hang each print. The team made this happen so it would be a surprise for the rest of the team when they arrived at work on Tuesday morning. In coming weeks we'll be sharing a video of their reactions.
21.01.2022 Why choose Soft Landing? Because we choose recycling methods that support local industry and have the least environmental footprint. We don’t send materials overseas for disposal; we keep our by-products in Australia, support local companies, reduce transport mileage and maximise re-use of materials. We send foam to carpet-underlay manufacturers, steel to Australian scrap metal recyclers, and bed bases to local industry (where there is a market) for mulch. ... 04.01.2022 Westpac Foundation visited our site in Smithfield Sydney recently, with social impact photo agency Flashpoint Labs. The result? Beautiful shots of our people in action. Soft Landing employed 220 people across Australia in 2019-20, 77% of whom joined us when experiencing barriers to employment.... Westpac has supported Soft Landing through its Social Scale Up Grants program since 2017.
02.01.2022 For every 35 mattresses that we collect and recycle each day, we can create a job for someone who really needs one. Providing employment and supporting local communities is just as important for us as recycling mattresses. Most of our revenue - about 65% - goes to wages of people who experience barriers to employment. These are dollars spent in local communities. Support job creation by booking your mattress for recycling at https://www.softlanding.com.au/online-booking/
01.01.2022 Kylie Roberts-Frost found herself running Soft Landing’s ACT operations while working from home with two young boys during lockdown this year. Like all parents in that situation, she did what she could. "I just did my best, I’d be on a call and the kids were jumping on the bed in the background. I had quite a few calls with people in the same position." ... Kylie joined us last year when she was returning to work after having her boys. She came with a corporate mindset, having led a team of 400 people across 15 countries as Head of Sales and Marketing Asia for the United Arab Shipping Company. She also came with a social mindset. "Working with people from different backgrounds and solving this environmental problem ticked just about everything that I had put on my life re-evaluation list." Once she joined, her commitment grew. "I feel like we’ve got a broader purpose than 'how many matts did I get through this week' or even 'I offered one guy a job' because it's about what we are potentially changing for the next 80 guys." In 2019-20 Soft Landing provided 220 employment opportunities across Australia - 77% of our staff have experienced barriers to employment.
