24.01.2022 We don’t convince other people by proving them wrong. We only do it when we first find something bigger that we can all agree on. That way we can stay in a collaborative mindset, rather than setting off a naturally defensive or combative mode. And if we’re honest, what makes us think that proving someone else wrong is for their benefit? Maybe we’re trying to prove something to ourselves? This is true in relationships, in politics, and at work.... I really like this quote, and this idea. It’s talking about humanity, not business, so I know I’m possibly reducing its grandeur here, but I think the principle is so fundamental that we can still apply it to more everyday things - that is, if you can’t find common ground with someone on the specific issue at hand, expand your circle . Ask yourself, What’s the bigger picture that we can both fit into? If we can at least establish that, *then* maybe we can sort out any smaller differences. Without it, there’s very little chance of moving forward. In a business context, this is at the heart of how a great analyst facilitates workshops, navigates stakeholder relationships and draws groups from different parts of a business together to pursue a common goal. Business analysis is a fundamentally human activity. The technology and the frameworks are just tools. Learn. Adapt. 22.01.2022 Do you ever get stuck when trying to find the right words to define a business requirement? It can be much harder than it seems at first. I’ve found there are simple and reliable ways to unblock the process. One of my favourites is borrowed from a simple productivity hack - writing a Don’t do list instead of a To do list. The principle is simple - by working on eliminating tasks that aren’t essential, you make more time and headspace to work on the things that really ar...e a priority. The same principle applies when writing requirements. Use your definition of done, or acceptance criteria to write down all the things this requirement is NOT. You’ll quickly find the requirement definition and the things it must do become simpler and clearer, and easier to define. . . . . . . #businessanalysis #businessrequirements #softwaredevelopment #softwiredau #businessowner #informationtechnology #projectmanagement
