24.01.2022 Meet a Sojourner! This is Christine and here is her story: I’ve known about Jesus ever since I was in elementary school. However as a Roman Catholic it was fairly easy for me to disregard understanding faith and God. Participating in religious activities like catechism felt more like a stage of life that I would ‘graduate’ from as I pursued my own personal life endeavours like attending university and working towards a career in architecture. During that point of my life r...eligious obedience felt like it was enough for me to get me to have a moral standing before God. Despite my engagement with the catholic faith I had never picked up the habit of reading the Bible nor was I explicitly exposed to its contents. Everything started shifting during the early years of my bachelor’s degree when I was confronted with the idea of reading the Bible and exploring my faith. This sounded like a crazy idea at that time as I was living in an Islamic country. After many months of refusing the encouragement of caring friends, they began journeying with me as we digested God’s word together. I found it easier to classify sin outside of myself without really seeing how I participate in this ‘sin problem’. It was only through much conversation, conferences, and talks that I saw the biblical idea of sin not merely as an action-based moral behaviour system but as the state of my own heart before a holy God. My moral obedience could never cover the heart level rebellion I was living in every day. Growing up I heard Jesus Christ came to die for the sins of the world, but it finally reached both my heart and mind in ways that have brought much conviction but deep comfort. More than mere religious activity and just knowing about Jesus, I share a unity and relationship with God through Christ. Nothing has changed, I am still a sinner often thinking I can earn God’s favour through my good deeds. But at the same time, today, I can rest in knowing God’s grace that I am redeemed by Christ’s life, finished work, and resurrection with that, everything changes.

As a local expression of the global Church it is valuable to look up and notice God's bigger purposes throughout the world. The war creates no absolutely new situation: it simply aggravates the permanent human situation so that we can no longer ignore it. Human life has always been lived on the edge of a precipice. Human culture has always had to exist under the shadow of something infinitely more important than itself." As we journey through the book of Joel over the coming weeks, we'll view life through the prophetic imagination which understands the present calamity as no more than an unveiling of the state in which we always live: a state of disaster and a state of hope.

13.01.2022 Meet a Sojourner! This is Jill and here is her story: Life has had its hardships and I asked God Why me? I am one of 8 children. My Mum and brothers and sisters live all around the country. I love music, reading, cooking and walking, however my family are the loves of my life. God has blessed me with a gorgeous stepdaughter and her family and a beautiful daughter and her family. My grandkids are my darling cherubs. My husband Ray and I recently celebrated our 20th weddin...g anniversary! Though I have so much to be grateful for life has also had its challenges. I went through a divorce 25 years ago and battled breast cancer 4 years ago. I have known the depths of sadness too. Losing my son Greg in the Black Saturday fires 11 years ago was the darkest time of my life. My brother died in a workplace accident 7 weeks after losing Greg. I often asked God Why me? But have also resonated with Paul’s words in Philippians 4: I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. In light of these words Why not me? Without the love and support of my stunning family and Christian community my ongoing recovery would have been more complex. It has been a challenging psychological journey and resulted in physical challenges too. I have learned so much through my journey and I continue to grow everyday, leaning in and drawing closer to our Lord as I rest in Him. I know great joy and am continually encouraged by our Sojourners Church community.

Or is the Church enriched by living into the mission of God in an environment of mutual submissionby sending, giving, and investing into the Kingdom outside of ourselves? At Sojourners we believe we need to be quick to recognise the limitations of our own abilities, vision, and mission. It is easy to believe the Church’s greatest threats are external but much of Christian histo...ry has shown us that many dangers are internal. Whether its leadership becoming domineering, mission becoming introspective, or inter-church issues becoming intractable, having oversight from outside helps us to be accountable with one another. As a church we want to be a place that not only builds people up but sends people out, as we have an outward facing heart for the city and the world. See more
