25.01.2022 Movement, and in particular lower limb weight bearing exercises, have a vital role in brain and nervous system function. Weight bearing leg exercises sends signals to the brain that are crucial for the production of healthy neural cells. "It is no accident that we are meant to be active: to walk, run, crouch to sit, and use our leg muscles to lift things...Neurological health is not a one-way street with the brain telling the muscles lift, walk, and so on." #movement #exercise #brainfunction #nervoussystem #health #cardiovascularimpacts #neurologicaldisorders #podiatrist #sportspodiatrist

23.01.2022 With the current whirlwind of changes to our lives, there has certainly been a shift in focus onto those side projects often left on the backburner. Im excited to welcome my partner in crime and student Exercise Physiologist Leesa Pech on board. Its one of many exciting changes coming to the page and business! Leesa has a background in psychology working in team leadership and mentoring, human resources, and operations and customer service management. 23.01.2022 If you’re expecting either yourself or your client to move well, execute exercise, perform, and avoid or even heal from injury. Without addressing underlying health and wellbeing factors such as sleep, nutrition, stress, rest, women’s health etc...good luck! It's like driving a car with a punctured wheel expecting it to hold up and move, without attending to the issue. It will eventually crash and burn, and come to a halt! #health #wellbeing #lifestylefactors #women #menstrualcycle #sportperformance #movement #exercise #sport #recovery #strengthtraining #sportsmedicine #performance

19.01.2022 Pain can be a horrible experience and at times debilitating. Mindfulness can be a tool that can be used to create a better relationship with the sensation it self. The action of awareness without judgment can reduce the perception of our pain. Meditation does not need to be done for hours (unless it is something you wish to explore). However, in order to gain the long term benefits and for it to be effective it does need to be done consistently. Even a regular 10min meditatio...n is powerful. The time can be increased in future sessions by adding a few more minutes. You can start by simply focusing on the breath moving in and out of your nostrils. When your thoughts, sensations or even pain arise, bring back your attention to the activity of focusing on your breath. Every time you notice you get distracted by thoughts, sounds, sensations etc. (dont feel defeated ) continue to bring your awareness back to your breath its the repetition of continuously bringing back the mind to the breath observation activity that will grant you success and the benefits Note the temperature, the rate of your breath as it travels in and out of the nostrils or any other quality of the breath. This will improve your awareness and concentration. With practice this will become easier to do. TIP: just make sure you choose a comfortable upright sitting position, on a cushion or chair so you are less likely to fall asleep and it will be better for your posture in the long run. There is no such thing as a good or bad meditation. Because we may feel pain, discomfort or even sadness our brain has a tendency to label it as bad and vice versa. is observing the breath and what ever is arising at the time without labelling it as good or bad. Pain is a complex phenomenon, mainly due to it being a multi-dimensional and subjective experience that consists of sensory, affective, and cognitive elements. Meaning, when we first experience a sensation of pain, we begin to judge it as bad and as something we want to immediately eradicate. Then, we start to conspire ways to escape the pain, to find any solution we can come up with, all the while continuing to judge our pain as negative. The subjective judgement we add inflates the pain, making the experience of it far more noxious than the sensory experience alone." #meditation #pain #perception

18.01.2022 Eat those fruit and veggies guys!!! To feel calmer, happier and more energetic you may need to look at your nutrition.... Eating fruits and vegetables may increase our emotional well-being and positively effect our mood for the days that follow. 17.01.2022 The Athletes Footwear Master Class A fantastic workshop and a one of a kind course on the history and evolution of athletic footwear. 14.01.2022 It's so sad that this subject is still treated as taboo. Trainers, coaches, clinicians, etc. fear of asking these important questions or warn that it's just too private. Being a woman and in my own years of competitive sport and training KNOW how much your menstrual cycle affects every facet of your life and performance, and continues throughout your entire life! I know I'm not alone in saying this, as women in sport in the last 20-30 years (still happening), we pretended to ...not have periods (we just didn't talk about them). It was perceived (still is) as a weakness IMAGINE that!!! It is far from a weakness...far from it! In our periods, in knowing our MENSTRUAL CYCLES and working with them from the way we approach nutrition, recovery, training, etc. ...lies our PERFORMANCE POWER. Oh, how I wish I had this knowledge that is coming out now back in my teens/20s when I was competing. Now I can continue to learn and use it in my 40s to see me through my years for my own performance training goals. We as trainers, coaches, clinicians have that incredible opportunity to truly support and raise the performance bar for younger women and for all women at all phases in the fields of any sports discipline or any women that have fitness or performance goals. WOMEN HAVE PERIODS...LETS GET OVER IT!!! AND START SUPPORTING WOMEN's PERFORMANCE!!! #menstrualcycle #perimenopause #menopause #sport #athletics #performance #womenshealth #fitness #exercise #women

13.01.2022 Being a fitness and gym junkie like many, I also miss lifting weights at my local gym. Luckily due to muscle memory, we can bounce back quicker! However, lockdown does not mean being in complete inertia. Sustaining our fitness and being active will be conducive to a stronger healthier body and mind.... There are many exercises, to sustain all three elements of fitness: strength, flexibility & mobility, and cardiovascular fitness. These are but not limited to: Bodyweights exercises for our strength. Pilates, yoga, and stretch exercises to maintain flexibility and mobility. Walking, running, swimming, cycling for cardiovascular fitness The key is to keep things simple and not to over complicate it OR over do it! You may be a novice lost and confused about how to start, design, and plan your fitness and strength program. Or you may be taking time out of your sport and not know how to maintain your fitness and strength during these times. I work with many levels of experience in fitness, sports, and athletes. Id be happy to have a chat about your goals. This is what Im passionate about: helping people stay strong, fit, and active...and most of all...injury free!!! Happy training guys! #stayingactive #fitness #strength #flexibility #mobility #cardiovascularfitness #strengthandconditioning #sports

11.01.2022 Were told to keep a minimum of 1.5 metres apart from others to avoid the spread of COVID-19 via contact with virus-contaminated droplets. So when news emerged last week of a study showing the potential for droplets to spread beyond 1.5m if a person is walking, jogging or cycling, it raised concerns. But the study was published before it was peer-reviewed by experts to double-check the findings.... Always be sure to check your sources!

11.01.2022 It is with the deepest sadness that Energize Physiotherapy Parramatta Westfield will be closing its doors 31 March. We were impacted by the corona epidemic in January. My physiotherapist colleague (owner) had been quarantined in China Wuhan, and still no definite date of her return. Also half of our patients were Chinese who traveled back for the Chinese New Year and were being quarantined and others doing self-isolation here. I took the opportunity to take the role as princ...ipal Podiatrist 5 years ago. My colleague and I were the pioneers, we built the clinic from the ground up, marketing, networking and doing whatever was necessary...hard work definitely! It grew to an impressive multidisciplinary clinic with exercise physiologist, more physiotherapists, psychologists and dietician. I took part in induction and training new staff and receptionists and learning new systems. When we knew of the corona impact and of our colleague being quarantined, we took all the necessary measures in increasing sanitation and infection control measures. Posters and educating patients, masks and screening patients. I will miss my patients the most I have offered them alternatives, mobile podiatry or other clinics. Doing everything possible in the next coming days/weeks communicating with doctors. My advice to other clinicians and other Podiatrists is to stay strong, what is coming wont be easy, as the corona just starts the early phases here in Australia hit by China in January...BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING. And lets come out of this wiser and stronger Take all the necessary precautions! I have learned so much from this opportunity at Energize Physiotherapy wisdom, skills, knowledge and experience that I will take with me. Thank you to all my colleagues that I have worked with physiotherapists (current and past), exercise physiologists, psychologists, and dieticians. Thank you to all the doctors and referrers PS A pic of me 5 years ago when I started...in my skinner days

11.01.2022 We are just at the start of the pandemic journey, with more challenges to come. So much has changed in such little time in our worlds. We have to keep reminding ourselves not to get too overwhelmed by what is happening and implement self care strategies. It doesnt need to be complex, just simply looking at the sky, being in nature, walking barefoot on the grass, looking at a garden. Simplicity is key right now in this chaotic world!... Love this video by Doctors Without Borders. The importance of self care is so essential right now! SELF CARE & STAY SAFE #COVID-19 #selfcare #staysafe

11.01.2022 Valuable advice from Prof. JB Morin. Something that may be overlooked in the return to your training and sports! Going from not wearing football boots for a prolonged time to wearing them daily can predispose the player to various soft tissue injuries of the foot and calf. Modern football boots and various other sporting footwear eg track and field spikes, basketball and cycling have very stiff soles also. ... During a long break from wearing them the soft tissues of the foot and lower leg have lost its adaptation. Key things: Transition from soft running shoes to stiff football boots in a progressive manner. For example doing drills and fitness sessions with both runners and alternating with the stiff football boots every two days. If there are other periods of restrictions in the future remember to train with your football boots. #sportinjuries #footjnjuries #calfinjuries #footballboots #shoes #trackandfield #basketball #cycling #sports #performance

10.01.2022 Sometimes exercise can be as effective at improving pain and mobility as surgery. Surgery or not, a factor determining the outcome is good muscle strength and good muscle function. And, importantly, exercise and being more physically active will help improve your general health; it is not only beneficial for the knee.

10.01.2022 Im a firm believer of inter-disciplinary learning. It broadens clinical knowledge and understanding of how to treat with a multidisciplinary approach. 05.01.2022 I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen or assessed ill fitted shoes in clinic and the foot pathologies and foot pain complaints linked to them. A recent systematic review looking at incorrectly fitted footwear, foot pain and foot disorders (Buldt & Menz, 2018), showed that as much as 63-72% of participants were wearing shoes that did not provide appropriate dimensions for either width or length. In addition, studies showed that incorrect shoe wear fitting w...ere associated with foot pain and foot disorders. The conclusion of this systematic review shows the increased prevalence of ill-fitting footwear in the population and therefore highlights the importance of footwear education. Here are some guidelines for footwear fitting: Purchase new shoes at the end of the day, when your foot is most swollen. Select shoes by fit NOT by size. The size of your foot changes as you get older. Shoes need to feel comfortable upon fitting, removing the idea that they need to be stretched in or broken in. Shoe length fitting is checked on standing and we should have one thumbs width from the longest toe to the end of the shoe. Shoe width fitting is checked making sure the ball of your foot fits comfortable in the widest part of the shoe and definitely NOT bulging. A thick cushion sole will be more comfortable for your feet when walking on hard surfaces. The upper of the shoe should be a soft, flexible material ideally with laces or an upper strap to hold your foot into place. Your heel should sit comfortably within the shoe, with minimal slipping. Check inside the shoe for seams or other materials that may cause irritation. Take your time to walk in the shoes to check they are comfortable. If youre having issues with footwear or foot pain visit a podiatrist. Buldt & Menz (2018). Journal of Foot and Ankle Research #foot #pain #shoes #footwear #podiatrist #clinician See more
