06.05.2022 Lead Carbon - the In-Between Battery Choice when Lithium is too expensive! Lead Carbon is a technology that has been around for many years though did not make its mark on the market due to the rapid advancements of Lithium technology. Lithium however comes with a downside - "cost". Where Lead Carbon technology comes into its own is extended cycle life in comparison to the standard Flooded / AGM / Gel Battery. Traditionally these 3 battery technologies all regarded as Lead Aci...d could give you cycles of around 800 - 1000 cycles at 50% Depth of Discharge (DoD) So 800/365 (days per year) gives us just over 2 years of battery life if discharged to 50% every day. Now Lead Carbon on the other hand is basically an AGM Battery with carbon added to the Negative Plate. As you can see from the graph in the image below, Lead Carbon batteries can give you 1500 cycles at 50% DoD. This equates to almost double the life cycle of the traditional lead acid battery. So one could expect around 4 years of battery life when discharged 50% every day. The best part of Lead Carbon is the cost being almost identical to the traditional Flooded AGM / Gel Battery. This In-Between technology makes perfect sense when good quality, safe Lithium options are out of most peoples price range.

31.03.2022 An Aussie Battery for Aussie Conditions! Way back in 1992 Battery Energy formed a Partnership with the CSIRO to create a Battery for Australian Condition. The Latest SunGEL Ultra Lead Carbon Battery by Battery Energy sees life spans approaching Lithium Technologies and a 12 Year Warranty. The question "Do I buy the more expensive Lithium Batteries or stay with traditional Lead Acid Batteries"? Well now there is an in-between option. A good Quality Lead Carbon Battery offers y...ou a far greater life cycle than traditional Lead Acid (AGM, Flooded or Gel) Batteries at a substantially reduced price compared to good quality Lithium Options. Looking at the Cycle life below, it can be noted at 30% DoD (Depth of Discharge - 70% Full) the SunGEL Ultra can achieve a "theoretical" 8800 cycles at 25 Deg C. whereas most good quality traditional Lead Acid Batteries will only yield around 5000 cycles the same 30% DoD. In an Off-Grid System we calculate this on 1 cycle per day. This gives 8800 cycles / 365 days per year = 24.11 years. As we are not in a Lab and due to great depths of discharge allowing for rainy days and perhaps slightly higher temperatures in our hot Australian Summers, in reality we will yield a figure around 18 - 20 years.
