22.01.2022 #TechTuesday Purifying water using sunlight Despite clean drinking water being one of lifes essentials, it is not a reality for over 2 billion people across the world. Current desalination practices have a number of drawbacks, including high energy consumption and chemical usage in membrane cleaning and dechlorination. Recently, a team of scientists from Australia and China has proposed a sustainable solution that can generate 139.5L of clean water per kilogram of MOF per d...ay. MOFs are such highly porous materials that a teaspoon of it has the surface area of an entire football field! They are therefore very efficient at absorbing and separating the salty solute found in brackish and seawater. Due to its photoreversible properties, after the filtration, the MOFs can be regenerate for reuse in just four minutes using sunlight to remove the absorbed salts. "Sunlight is the most abundant and renewable source of energy on Earth. Our development of a new adsorbent-based desalination process through the use of sunlight for regeneration provides an energy-efficient and environmentally-sustainable solution for desalination. -- Professor Huanting Wang, Monash University #solar #tech #technology #water #life #sustainable #greenfuture #future

14.01.2022 #TechTuesday Reducing avian collision with wind turbines With the world moving towards more sustainable means of harvesting energy, we can expect the number of wind turbines around the world to increase. However, a major problem with current wind turbines are the amount of bird fatalities through collision with the moving turbine rotor blades. Scientists in Norway recently published a paper which found that when one of the three blades on a wind turbine was painted black, av...ian deaths was reduced by 72%! Relative to humans, birds have a narrow frontal field of view (because their eyes are located more towards the sides), so they may not always perceive obstructions ahead. It is thought that all-white blades only causes motions smear in the birds view and they do not perceive them as moving objects. Painting one blade black is believed to have created motion patterns that a bird perceive as a moving object, and this enables them to take evasive action in due time. #windenergy #sustainability #greenfuture #green #environment #birds #sustainable

04.01.2022 #TechTuesday Generating renewable hydrogen fuel from the sea The power of the sun, wind and sea may soon combine to produce clean-burning hydrogen fuel, according to researchers. Hydrogen is a great fuel, with enormous amount of energy released through the burning of hydrogen and the only product of the reaction being water. But making hydrogen is currently not sustainable. A team of researchers are investigating the efficacy of producing hydrogen by splitting sea water using... renewable energy. In sea water electrolyser, an electric current generated by wind or solar power splits water molecules into protons and oxygen gas at the anode. The protons will then combine with electrons at the cathode to form hydrogen gas. Currently, electrolysing sea water faces a major difficulty due to the presence of chloride ions that turn into toxic chlorine gas that can degrade the equipment and seep into the environment. This new technique does not require the desalination of sea water, and can provide a cheaper and safer method for large scale renewable production of hydrogen! #solar #tech #sustainability #greenfuture #green #future #windenergy #hydrogenfuel #technology
