21.04.2022 What makes us choose good health? It’s because we VALUE it. Our actions always represent our values. Community’s help reinforce values, which is why it’s so important to be part of a group that promotes activity and good health. What are you doing to promote health and well-being to loved ones around you?

01.04.2022 Kipchoge's ground-breaking marathon time of one hour, 59 minutes and 40.2 seconds captivated the world! He was wearing the Nike Vaporfly Next%, a specially designed pair of shoes, which features a "spring-like mechanism" that aids performance. The shoe also includes a carbon fibre plate in the midsole and it's claimed they improve running performance, just how much is a popular discussion point! This doesn't appear to be just marketing hype and a serious look into the technology and properties of the shoe are well worth investigating!

05.03.2022 RUNNING SHOE FITTING TIPS Shoe fit is one of the most important yet undervalued aspects in the selection of a running shoe. The running shoe market has intensified over the last 20 years with shoe brands constantly touting the latest in footwear technology in the hopes of improved comfort, performance and injury prevention. Footwear is the main interface between the foot and the environment. It alters input signals, altering forces from the ground to the foot and further up t...he kinetic chain. Correctly fitted and prescribed shoes suitable for the demands placed on your body specific to the activity is vital. OUR 6 FITTING TIPS; Your foot size can still change as you go through adulthood so occasionally re-assessing your true size is beneficial. Generally a thumb nail space gap between the end of shoe and your foot is a good starting point whilst making sure the shoe accommodates your whole foot without too much overall tightness. In most cases one foot will be longer than the other and it is important to fit to the longest foot. Go by what fits, not what size the shoe is. The correct size shoe for you is the one that fits and that is not always going to be the same size every time. The way the shoe is constructed will ultimately determine how the shoe fits and it is important to consider what brands and styles of shoe that have worked well in the past. It is important to try a few different sizes, brands and models for comparison. What works for one person may not work for you. If you currently have foot, ankle, leg, knee pain or injury don’t overlook footwear as an important factor to why it may be occurring.

19.02.2022 One of our patients; 85 year old male who had a 3 cm leg length discrepancy after a hip surgery 20 years ago. He has been accommodating it with this sponge on his shorter side and hasn’t looked back I thought about giving him a few heel lifts but decided that what he was doing was working for him and to keep using it. A large percentage of people will have some sort of discrepancy from left to right leg. Usually it’s less than 1 cm and not something we generally look to intervene with.

24.01.2022 Breaking News! There is now a foot emoji! This is really life changing stuff here folks. We will be taking the day off to celebrate.

23.01.2022 ORTHOSES DESIGN Here we have two quite different left and right orthotics BUT for the same person. You can see that the geometry or shape is quite different!... This is a custom device which after a full assessment we have carefully written a prescription to change biomechanical function of the foot and lower limb. This patient has some quite significant biomechanical challenges on the left that we have had to consider in the prescription. #clinicaltalk What do we consider with custom orthoses therapy; Step 1) Assess / Biomechanical Assessment; consider a patient-specific treatment plan aimed at addressing the identified causes; This may include orthotic therapy but generally always other strategies; rehab, strength work, physio input etc. Step 2) Capture a 3D Foot Scan of the foot shape and structure Step 3) Prescribe; After spending time understanding your function, pain, activity and footwear we prescribe completely tailored solution with a science based approach. Step 4) Orthoses Fitting; an essential step to ensure the orthotics are achieving what they are supposed to do and a discussion about how these are implemented into your treatment plan and daily shoe wear.

21.01.2022 Achilles, a hero of ancient Greek mythology, his mother dipped him into the river Styx, and this water made his body invincible But she held on to his heel which left that area vulnerable and ultimately Achilles died after an arrow punctured his heel and so the name Achilles Tendon was born. As strong and durable as they are, they are like any part of the body and still can be prone to injury. Click goo.gl/EKiCWT for more

19.01.2022 The foot is complex. Loads of joints and muscles which are there for a reason. 17.01.2022 RUNNING & ACHILLES PAIN Great to be working with PT and Muay Thai Fighter Adam from Evidence Based Training in Robina. He has been suffering from a niggling achilles overuse problem for some time now. An Achilles injury is an all too common complaint for athletes and runners alike. ... Adams pain started occurring a few months after he ramped up his running load, and started pumping out 10KM runs daily after quite a few years off any real running. This excessive running volume straight from nothing combined with barefoot Muay Thai fighting was way too much for his poor Achilles to handle.... over some weeks slowly but surely his pain started progressing till running was totally off the cards and he has not returned since!!! One of the most important things we spent time assessing is where he is at in his present injury! He is really only getting pain in the morning, he has minimal symptoms with a lot of functional testing! He is still doing Muay Thai, and training clients all day long in the gym. We will be working with Adam over the next few weeks. Our plan for ADAM: Discussion and education around his diagnosis and prognosis. What is his pain telling us? pain vs damage. We are confident a total resolution of his problem can be acheived with the right education and management plan. 3 x sessions of shock wave therapy to kick start his rehab journey given the length of his symptoms. Gait analysis & footwear check; Identify any risk factors that may be worth modifiying given Adams presenting complaint. An exercise rehabilitation program focusing on building significant strength in his achilles tendon to reduce pain and build his ability to tolerate load. A progression from this to more lower leg strength exercises to prep him for a return to running program. Watch this space.

14.01.2022 SINGLE LEG SQUAT PROGRESSION I have been working with Josh, 14 year old, football athlete who was recently part of an Aussie rep team that went to the U.K to compete against some junior EPL academy teams. For the last 6 months we have been working with Josh, he originally came in injured but responded quickly to treatment. We then focused on injury prevention and performance through various exercise therapy prescriptions and he has improved remarkably over a number of differe...nt domains. He is a hard worker and is set for big things. We have reached a ceiling point now so for Josh to keep progressing he will need further expertise via a strength and performance coach in an equipped gym! Utilising a seat for single leg squats can help with improving optimal movement patterns and squat depth acting a safety net for patients. I also like the substantial glut recruitment that you can get from propelling fast off the seat! On a side note; I hope everyone has had a great Christmas and New Years break! I have been MIA for some weeks on the social media front for good reason! We are back on board on the Gold Coast for a limited time and limited locations. There are some new and exciting endeavours I will be able to share in due course. Please call our admin team on (07) 5568 7010 if you wish to make an appointment.

13.01.2022 WHAT THE HEEL We took an X-RAY recently of one of our patients and discovered a pretty significant heel spur. A heel spur is a bony growth usually coming from underneath the heel bone, (calcaneus bone). ... On first sight, you must be thinking OUCH BUT this women has never had any heel pain in her life This X-RAY was taken for a completely different problem A heel spur is often identified by a traditional XRAY and a lot of the time your doctor may tell you that you have a heel spur and there is nothing that you can do. BUT is the heel spur actually the source of the pain you feel underneath your heel? If you do indeed have pain originating there. Is it a sign of future problems to arise? Very hard to say. Is it a sign of traction and stress on the heel? Yes, but that can be completely normal. X-ray evidence suggests that approx 10% of the population have heels spurs but do not have any associated pain Painful heel spurs are often uncommon and tend to only cause pain when they are very large. Typically, treatment of pain underneath the heel is first addressed by finding the source of your pain. If it is a nerve entrapment, plantar fasciitis, or bone stress? Referred pain from your back? Your Achilles? Your heel fat pad? A lot of potential problems occur around the heel! Once we know the WHAT, then we need to find the WHY. Each of these needing a specific and individualised plan of action best assisted by a podiatrist. Private message our team if you would like to know more

11.01.2022 Big News! I have officially taken over Claremont Podiatry, in Hobart, Tasmania established for over 20 years in the Northern Suburbs of Hobart. I am sure there will be many challenges along the way but I feel immensely prepared for everything that this next adventure throws at me from the many great people that I have come into contact with over the last 10 years of my career! You know who you are! I am looking forward to helping the community and continuing to uphold the strong reputation of the clinic after Bernadette Nicholls, who retired after 30 years of practicing in Hobart. A big thank you to my family, my partner and everyone close to me that has helped me along the way. I hope I can soon be more active on this page and bring a really innovative sport & exercise podiatry practice to Hobart CBD sometime soon!

09.01.2022 "FAKE NEWS" SAYS TRUMP As usual, there is a lot of misinformation circulating regarding health and well-being, and the true answer as always is, it depends. While some exercises may be inappropriate for some individuals at some point in time, to say that arguably the top 4 strength building exercises are bad for people over the age 50, those who probably should be doing strength training the most, is simply NOT TRUE.... There are many experts out there to assist you with resistance training! USE THEM, Get the right education and advice tailored to you. Adam @ Evidence Based Training in ROBINA. 07.01.2022 The foot of a young adult male is shown walking in shoes with custom foot orthoses using high-speed stereo radiography at 100 frames/second. When compared to the previous video of this man walking barefoot, note the decrease in flattening of the medial longitudinal arch and decrease in motions at the midtarsal and midfoot joints especially during the midstance phase of gait. This subject was part of a scientific study on foot kinematics by Mannen et al that was published in 2018 (Mannen EM, Currie SJ, Bachman EC, Otmane A, Davidson BS, Shelburne KB, McPoil TG. 05.01.2022 Calcaneal apophysitis! Also known as Sever's disease... although we really dislike this outdated terminology, it sounds so scary doesn't it! Calcaneal apophysitis occurs at the back of the heel bone due to inflammation of the heel growth plate. It occurs in children around the age group of 8 to 14. The growth plate is exposed during this time which is prone to inflammation in very active kids. After the age of around 14 the growth plate has completely formed to rigid bone w...hich can absorb impact and disperse stresses more optimally. Unfortunately vulnerable stages of adolescent growth, the heel can become inflamed due to repetitive stress. Many activities like walking, running and jumping that are included in sport inflame the growth plate this creating discomfort and pain. There a number of conservative strategies that can really assist this type of problem. Prevention is the best treatment! We spend a considerable amount of time speaking about how to manage this type of condition so that kids do not spend considerable time away from the sports they love.
