25.01.2022 Jewellery Classics - the hoop earrings Few earring designs are as ancient, as coveted, as controversial and, now, more mainstream than the hoop earring. One of the oldest hoops found in Mongolia in jade dates back 8,000 years. Hoops represented Persian and Egyptian royalty, denoted rank in militaries and, in Europe, signified a sailor or pirate who had sailed the world. Worn by African cultures for centuries, hoops made their way west on the ears of slaves brought to the... New World and the Caribbean. In the 18th century, hoops finally began their rise to becoming a jewelry wardrobe staple. Today, the simple hoop is continuously being reinvented with oxidized metals and in sculptural geometrical shapes and organic forms found in nature.

24.01.2022 Ever thought of owning a blue diamond?? What is described as an exceptional 29.6ct blue rough diamond has been found at the Cullinan mine in South Africa. Mine owner Petra Diamonds says the stone exhibits outstanding vivid blue with extraordinary saturation, tone, and clarity, and has the potential to yield a polished stone of great value and importance.... Blue diamonds are among the rarest and most highly coveted of all diamonds, and the Cullinan mine is the most important source of blues in the world, the company added. This is not the first notable blue found at Cullinan. In April 2013, a 25.5ct blue was discovered there. In 2008, a 26.6ct rough was unearthed and would become the 7ct Star of Josephine, which sold for more than U$9 million at Sotheby’s. 20.01.2022 St Valentine's Day has passed for another year. But every day should be about love, romance and being with your special person. So from time to time we will be posting tips about what you can do to add romance to your world. Take a walk together For centuries walking was at the centre of courting a person.... It still is, but without vigilant chaperones close behind. On a walk silence is permitted. On a walk difficult subjects can be broached. On a walk, hand-in-hand, two hearts can be one.

20.01.2022 I wonder if I can find a shipwreck like this in Lake Burley Griffin?? But the gold U$20 coin looks amazing - I wonder how Australia would go if we replaced our $20 notes with gold coins!!!! http://www.dispatch.com///gold-ship-salvager-approved.html

19.01.2022 We have received this stunning 1.00ct E VS1 cushion cut diamond for a very lucky person, the photo does not do justice to the scintillation and brilliance of the stone - we were all amazed at beauty and sparkle (we do not get to see many cushion cut diamonds of this size and beauty)

18.01.2022 When we hear 'ruby,''sapphire,' 'emerald' we have a particular image of a stone - but they do come a variety of forms. Bonhams will offer the largest ruby crystal ever auctioned at its Gems, Minerals, Lapidary Works of Art and Natural History sale in Los Angeles on 20 May 2014. The crystal, in zoisite, was mined in Longido, Tanzania, and weighs 45.6kg, or 228,000cts, and is estimated to bring between U$100,000 and U$150,000.

18.01.2022 Jewellery Classics - the tennis bracelet In 1987, while Chris Evert was competing in a match at the US Tennis Championships, the clasp broke on her diamond bracelet. She requested that the match be suspended until she found her bracelet, and her request was granted. Since then, the in-line diamond bracelet has been known by its sportier moniker. ... Although few women wear diamond bracelets to play tennis, jewellery designers added safety chains to back up the clasps and the tennis bracelet’s modern look was born. Now, any in-line repetitive-design bracelet is referred to as a tennis bracelet

13.01.2022 It is a colour that the fashion world has managed to breathe new life into, designing apparel so sophisticated that the baby-girl color somehow seems fresh. Chalk it up to designers like Vera Wang, who unveiled a bridal line done entirely in various shades of pink, and from powdery blush to bright fuchsia. Round pink diamonds held in 18k rose gold prongs flank the centre stone, adding just enough pink that the piece glows with colour, but it is subtle enough for continuous, forever wear. The pavé diamonds that coat the shank further add to the full-on sparkly look; imagine this beauty with the sun making all those diamonds sparkle! It is a showstopper. Perhaps not all brides will be wishing for a pink wedding dress, and that is just fine. But this ring, with its timeless silhouette and endless shine, is no trend.

11.01.2022 Jewellery Classics - the solitaire ring The notion of claiming a mate by adorning them with something pretty has been around since cavemen fashioned crude rings from blades of grass. Ancient Egyptians used the never-ending circular shape to create engagement bands. The modern tradition of the diamond solitairea French word meaning one or unityis thought to have started with Austria’s Archduke Maximilian in 1477, when he presented Mary of Burgundy a gemstone ring to s...eal their betrothal. Wealthy Europeans followed suit and a jewelry craze was born. Today, designers are playing with the solitaire using colored and sliced diamonds in sculpted settings. An earthy, hand-sculpted 18k white gold solitaire with a vinelike prong setting pushes the design envelope, as does a 2.05ct gray (think of a diamond between an I3 and black where the inclusions make a marbling pattern in the diamond) rose cut diamond engagement ring.

11.01.2022 The Super Bowl is the most popular sporting event in the United States almost 110 million Americans watched it in February 2013. So it is not surprising that the Super Bowl ring is a matter of serious interest. As the game has grown in popularity, the rings have become fancier: more diamonds and gemstones, more complex designs, and a lot more wow factor. Consider the first ring made in 1966 (shown below) that sported a single one-carat diamond. The Baltimore Ravens won th...e most recent Super Bowl ring in a 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Minneapolis-based Jostens designed the ring. It has 129 round brilliant cut diamonds; the Baltimore Ravens logo is outlined with 40 round brilliant cut diamonds sitting atop a custom-cut amethyst stone. An iconic Baltimore B, handcrafted in yellow gold with the beak of the Raven in white gold, is in the center. The eye of the bird is red enamel. Maybe it is time for the NRL and Rugby Union to start a similar tradition!!

08.01.2022 Jewellery classics - the pendant The pendant, derived from the Old French word pendre, meaning to hang, has come a long way since man first cut holes into rocks and shells and hung them on vines or grass. By the second century B.C., Sicilian carvers were creating opulent filigree pendants of gold and inlaying them with garnets. Pendants went on to feature everything from crocodiles and crucifixes to cameos and costumed figures.... today, some pendants could have walked off the history pages. Other designers opt for a quirky, almost cartoonish bent. I have recently seen an emoji inspired smiley face pendants feature ruby heart eyes. Fossilised materials, such as agate tusks, shark’s teeth, dinosaur bone, and walrus ivory, are used often in modern pendants, while some designers are returning to what the ancients wore shells. Pictured in a favourite Hei Matau that I have. The fish hook was an important resource for Maori, as the sea provided a rich source of food. In Maori mythology, New Zealand was fished up out of the sea by Maui. The fish hook signifies abundance and plenty, strength and determination. It is believed to bring peace, prosperity and good health. It is a device for catching good luck and energy, and is believed to provide safe journey over water. It is therefore considered a good luck charm by travellers, boaties, fishermen and surfers. Can any reader guess what it is made of (it is not referred to above)??

07.01.2022 I think I will be going to more second hand stores, flea markets and garage sales from now on....... A Midwest metal dealer who bought a gold item at an antiques mart that he intended to melt down for scrap was shocked to discover it was a rare Fabergé egg worth a reported U$33 million. The man paid $14,000 for the item.... It contained a Vacheron Constantin watch, so he figured he could sell it at slightly above the gold value. But no one was interested, fortunately. In despair, the man typed egg and Vacheron Constantin into Google and came up with a Telegraph article on surviving Fabergé eggs that quoted Kieran McCarthy, director of London antique dealer Wartski, and showed a picture of his egg. The man got on a plane to London and presented McCarthy with a picture. It was like the Holy Grail walking through the front of our gallery, he says. I was absolutely shivering with excitement. We always reserve opinions until we handle it, McCarthy adds. But he was so unlikely a character we figured it had to be true. Eventually, McCarthy traveled to the man’s home, where he saw the egg sitting in his kitchen, next to a cupcake. When he told the man what he had, he dropped to the floor, he says. He was conscious, but he dropped, McCarthy says. It has since been identified as one of the lost Imperial Easter eggs designed by Carl Fabergé. Of the 50 Imperial eggs, the whereabouts of 42 of them are known, but eight are missing. Five of them are believed to have been destroyed, but the other three escaped Russia. This was among those three. The egg’s pedestal includes colored gold garlands suspended from cabochon blue sapphires, topped with rose diamond-set bows. Inside is a lady’s watch with a white enamel dial and diamond-set gold hands by Vacheron Constantin. It is in remarkably good condition, McCarthy says, though it is missing a few gemstones. Russian emperor Alexander III gave the egg to Empress Maria Feodorovna on Easter in 1887.

07.01.2022 We all have one: a gorgeous, sentimental piece of jewellery given to us by someone special that just is not our style. Even the late Princess Diana. When the 20-year-old married Prince Charles in 1981, the Queen Mother bequeathed her a brooch featuring a duck-egg-size Sri Lankan sapphire set in a double row of diamonds. It was perfect for someone else. Diana wasn’t really a brooch person, International Herald Tribune fashion writer and author of The Royal Jewels Suzy Men...kes has said. It didn’t really go with those clothes during the 1980s. (Heavy pins and shoulder pads just don’t mix!) The new bride wore the brooch only twice before it seemed to disappear. Then a few years later, she boldly turned the jewel into the centerpiece of this breathtaking seven-strand pearl choker. Pearl chokers were a staple among the women in her family; her mother, grandmother, two sisters, and Diana herself all donned them on Charles and Di’s wedding day. The piece garnered a suitable sobriquet: the seven-strand pearl choker that stunned the world.

06.01.2022 Romance Tip Every now and then dress to the nines. Send a note of mad love.... Do a headstand. Go off the grid. Why not?

05.01.2022 A learning curve for me - I did not realise pearls could command such a price: A pair of rare and exceptional natural pearls sold for U$3,301,000 at a Doyle New York auction, setting a world record for natural pearls at auction. The large drop-shape pearls are slightly brownish gray and are mounted in diamond and silver caps, which are set on a platinum and diamond pendant. ... A Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) report states that they are natural saltwater pearls with no indications of artificial color modification. The report puts the weights at 104 and 100 grains. An accompanying letter from the SSEF also states: Assembling a matching pair of natural pearls of this size and quality is very rare and exceptional, and thus this pair of pearls can be considered a very exceptional treasure of nature.

04.01.2022 Looking for that something special, the following are being auctioned at Sotheby's New York this week: The El Dorado Emerald, a 36.53 ct. emerald-cut Colombian emerald set in a platinum, 18k gold, and diamond ring (estimate: U$1.8 millionU$2.2 million). An exceptional platinum, sapphire, and diamond ring, designed by Oscar Heyman & Brothers, featuring a 28.18 ct. square emerald-cut Kashmir sapphire set in a tapered baguette diamond mounting. Sotheby’s calls the center st...one one of the finest Kashmir sapphires ever to appear at auction (estimate: U$4 million$5 million). A magnificent fancy intense orangy-pink diamond ring with a 15.23 ct. cushion-cut diamond (estimate: U$6 millionU$7 million).

03.01.2022 What did you think of Cate Blanchett's gown? It was embellished enough, but she dared to wear giant opal drops set in white gold from Chopard gorgeous. Naomi Watts paired her winter-white Calvin Klein gown with a spiderweb-like diamond Bulgari necklace. Jennifer Lawrence's Neil Lane necklace weighed in at 100 carats and cost U$2 million and let's not forget her 10ct diamond studs and diamond-and-platinum ring.

02.01.2022 Thinking about a birthday present for someone in March - there are two birthstones that you may like to consider - aquamarine and bloodstone: Aquamarine The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea. This gemstone was believed to protect sailors, as well as to guarantee a safe voyage. ... The serene color of aquamarine is said to cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and levelheaded. Its pale, cool color beautifully complements spring and summer wardrobes. Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color usually is more intense in larger stones. This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique. Bloodstone The second birthstone for March is bloodstone, a dark-green jasper flecked with vivid red spots of iron oxide. This ancient stone was used by the Babylonians to make seals and amulets and was believed to have healing powers especially for blood disorders. Generally found embedded in rocks or in riverbeds as pebbles, primary sources for this stone are India, Brazil, and Australia.

02.01.2022 Yes, it is nearly that time of year again when some lucky (but others might disagree if they are paying) people were born in April - with the birthstone being diamonds!! Here are some different ways diamonds have been regarded through history in different cultures.............. Judge of Innocence and Guilt... At one time, Jewish high priests used diamonds to determine the innocence or guilt of someone accused of a crime. Their belief was that a diamond held before a guilty person would dull and darken, while a diamond held before an innocent person would glow with increased brilliance. Healing Agent The diamond, originally thought to have exceptional healing abilities, was considered by some in past millenniums to be a miracle stone. A large variety of healing properties have been attributed to the diamond, including the ability to cure stomachaches, memory loss, depression, physical tiredness, infections, mental illnesses, nightmares, skin diseases, and many other head and heart ailments. Tears of the Gods, Falling Stars and Cupid’s Arrows The ancient Romans and Greeks had many powerful beliefs about diamonds, including ideas that diamonds were the tears of the gods or possibly even splinters that had broken off of falling stars. Roman literature, which first made mention of diamonds in the first century AD, also stated that Cupid’s irresistible arrows were tipped with diamonds. Classical Greek philosopher Plato went even further to write about diamonds as living beings that embodied celestial spirits. Lightning Bolt Fragments The Hindus, who were known to use diamonds in the eyes of their statues, believed that diamonds were created when bolts of lightning struck rocks. Diamonds were also believed to attract lightning bolts. Satan’s Temptation In Persian culture, there exists a myth that God had no need for diamonds, gold, or any other precious metals or gems when he created the world. Satan, however, took notice that Eve loved the brightly coloured flowers in the Garden of Eden and so created gemstones in the same hues to tempt humans. Warfare Protection In ancient times, Kings were known to lead wars on the battlefield wearing heavy leather breastplates studded with diamonds. It was believed that diamonds possessed God-given magical qualities and superpowers far beyond the understanding of ordinary humans.

01.01.2022 Need a gift for February, consider a gift with Amethyst as part of the piece. Amethyst, the gemstone believed by ancient Greeks and Romans to ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus, also is said to keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted. Throughout history, the gemstone has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numerous cultures. English regalia were even decorated with amethysts during the Middle Ages to symbolise royalty. ... It has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numerous cultures. Amethyst is purple quartz, a beautiful blend of violet and red that can found in every corner of the earth. Historically, the finest amethyst were found in Russia and were featured in much royal European jewelry. Today, while Brazil is the primary source of this gemstone, fine material can be found elsewhere, especially in Zambia.
