25.01.2022 Refined carbohydrates are linked to increased risks of diseases including obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Refined carbs are also known as simple carbs or processed carbs and they come in the form of sugars and refined grains that has been processed and stripped of almost all fiber, vitamins and minerals. Examples of refined carbs: white flour, white bread, white rice, pastries, sodas, snacks, pasta, sweets, breakfast cereals and added sugars. Refined carbs are add...ed to processed food and in many countries are the main source of dietary carbs consumed. As these carbs are digested quickly by the body, they cause rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels following consumption. For an hour or two after eating meals high in refined carbs, your body begins to promote hunger and stimulate parts of the brain associated with reward and craving. This leads to overeating. For more information, head to: https://www.healthline.com/nutri/why-refined-carbs-are-bad Want to know more? get informed and see our dietitian now! 25.01.2022 R U OK? Day 2020 A conversation could change a life. Before looking out for others, look out for yourself. If you're not in the right headspace or you don't think you are the right person to start the conversation, try to think of someone else in their support network who could talk to them. Ask yourself:... 1. Am I ready? 2. Am I prepared? 3. Picked my moment? More information available via https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask Information sourced from: https://www.ruok.org.au/

24.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day! We thought now would be the perfect time to talk about how exercise can help you feel "better". Physical exercise is increasingly being advocated as a means to maintain and enhance good mental health. Research findings indicate that exercise is associated with improvements in mental health including mood state and self-esteem. Research on acute exercise indicates that 20 to 40 minutes of aerobic activity results in improvements in state anxie...ty and mood that persist for several hours. Exercise may function as a means of treatment. However it is important to note that exercise may result in detrimental changes in mental health, as some individuals can become overly dependant on physical activity and exercise to an excessive degree. This abuse of exercise can result in disturbances in mood and worsen physical health. The mental health benefits of exercise are: Exercise releases endorphins and serotonin that improve mood Help reduce any feelings of loneliness and isolation Reduce stress Improves sleep Increases blood flow to the brain Increases the connections between the nerve cells in the brain Increases the size of hippocampus improve memory Combing exercise and a healthy balanced nutritious diet will boost energy and moral. For a plan to help you start your exercise journey contact Solutions for Wellbeing for more information. If you have any other mental health concerns please speak with your health care professional or call lifeline on 13 11 14. A walk most days, regular resistance exercise and balance exercises can help prevent falls and the associated risks. If you have noticed your balance deteriorating or have had a recent fall, book an appointment with one of our Physiotherapists or Exercise Physiologists t...oday! 16.01.2022 FUN FACT FRIDAY Adults have 206 bones in their body, however, did you know that babies are born with about 300 bones? Almost a third of these eventually fuse together to form the 206-bone skeleton of an adult. Some of these bones in a baby's body are not really bone at all, but instead cartilage, a soft and flexible material that eventually grows into a bone.... The prevalence of diabetes is increasing at a frightening rate, with 280 Australians developing diabetes every day. That’s one person every five minutes. 8590 per cent of these cases are type 2. Diabetes puts a strain on the healthcare system, with 1 million hospitalisations and 16,400 deaths associated with diabetes in 2015.
