19.01.2022 If you're off to the shack this weekend it will be tempting to get the wood heater or open fireplace going. Chimneys and flues that have not been properly main...tained can catch fire, and these types of fires have already destroyed homes in Tasmania this year. These things can help reduce the risks associated with fireplaces and wood heaters: Have your chimney/flue professionally cleaned annually. Only burn wood that has been properly seasoned/dried, so it burns hotter and produces less smoke. Place a fire screen in front of fireplaces. Put logs in lengthways so they can’t roll out. Keep anything flammable, including your woodpile, at least two metres from the fireplace. And most importantly, have smoke alarms installed in every sleeping area - that includes your shack, boat and caravan. 17.01.2022 Police are urging Tasmanians to take note of forecast weather warnings, with wet and icy conditions likely across the state overnight and tomorrow. The Bureau o...f Meteorology has issued warnings for road users and bushwalkers, and we need people to heed that advice. Wet conditions and ice and snow are on the way, which means our roads will be slippery and motorists will need to be extremely cautious. Strong and icy winds will also pose a serious risk to bushwalkers, so please reconsider if you were planning on doing a walk over the next few days. Police need Tasmanians to be sensible and to do what they can to keep themselves safe in these conditions. If you're travelling on the roads, remember: Never drive faster than the speed limit, and if conditions are wet, dark or frosty, slow down and travel at a speed that allows plenty of time to stop quickly and safely. Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front. Be aware roads can become slippery so drive accordingly. Don’t allow distractions like mobile phones to affect your judgement and reaction times. Make sure you turn your headlights on if it’s dark, or visibility is poor. To stay up to date on road closures, check our Community Alerts at https://www.police.tas.gov.au/community-alerts/

09.01.2022 Do you use a wheat bag? Hobart Fire Brigade attended an incident last night where a wheat bag caught fire in a microwave. Fortunately on this occassion the dam...age from the fire was limited to the microwave. However, there have been instances in Tasmania where wheat bags have caused house fires and a death. Tips for using wheat bags: only use in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions don't overheat in the microwave dispose of them when they get old and the contents dry out don't use them to warm bedding - use a hot water bottle instead More information is available here: http://www.fire.tas.gov.au//200053-TFS-Wheat-filled-hea-pa

08.01.2022 Winter is almost upon us. The likelihood of accidental house fires increases with people spending more time at home. Some tips to keep you and your family safe:... Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and hallway. Have a home fire escape plan that you practice with your whole family. Dust and test your smoke alarm once a month. Clean your clothes dryer filter after each use and always run it until the end of the cool down cycle. Keep everything two metres from the heater. Have your chimney and flue professionally cleaned annually. Never leave cooking unattended. Turn your electric blanket off when you get into bed. Use your wheat bag according to manufacturer’s instructions and never overheat in the microwave. Stay safe and visit www.fire.tas.gov.au for more information on how to stay fire safe.

05.01.2022 A house fire in Glenorchy last night was caused by a clothes dryer, destroying a garage, and $100,000 damage. Some tips for safe clothes dryer use: clean the ...lint filter after each use - lint is highly flammable and is the cause of many dryer-related fires. make sure your dryer is well ventilated. always run the dryer to the end of the cool down cycle - fires have been caused when the dryer has been stopped before the end of the cycle, causing the items to keep heating up and combusting while they are in a pile. 05.01.2022 We've seen an increase in call outs to people burning off on their properties and leaving the fire unattended. Make sure you give us a call to register your bu...rn. That way we can put the fire on our map and if someone calls to report the fire, we'll be able to give you a call before we respond. This way you can avoid an unnecessary visit from your local brigade and our vollies can carry on enjoying their long weekend. Fires on your property must never be left unattended, even at this time of year, and make sure it's out before you leave it. Stay safe everyone!
