25.01.2022 If you have symptoms, even if mild, get tested immediately. Stay home while you wait for your results. Wash/sanitise your hands regularly. Keep 1.5m distance from others wherever possible. Clean frequently touched surfaces.

21.01.2022 It’s time for the weekend Our tip: Don’t ditch the alarm! We know, it feels oh so good to ditch the alarm clock and sleep until 10am. But researchers have found that social jet lag the discrepancy that occurs between our body’s biological clock and the sleeping schedule we keep on weekends due to social activities ends up making you more tired, and inevitably, in a worse mood than if you maintained a consistent sleep schedule all seven days.... Plus, they found that it can have some more serious health consequences. With every one hour that sleep is shifted, you increase your risk of heart disease by 11 percent. Each one-hour shift was also linked with a 28 percent higher likelihood of people reporting their health as poor or fair compared to excellent. Waking up at a consistent time is earlier said than done your bed is very appealing on a lazy Sunday morning. So, make getting up a little less painful by scheduling something you can look forward to earlier in the day whether that’s a manicure, a sporting event or a coffee date with a friend!

19.01.2022 Meatless Monday?.... That slab of steak could be stinking up your sweat, according to research published in the journal Chemical Senses. Though diet is not the only factor that affects natural body odor, the study found that consuming meat can have a huge effect on the "attractiveness" of your body odor. Participants who refrained from eating red meat were generally perceived as smelling more pleasant, less intense, and more attractive overall.... Meat intake can build up in the body and slow things down, causing you to feel tired and undernourished. Going plant-based ensures that your body at least gets the nutritional baseline it requires to thrive on a day-to-day basis!

18.01.2022 It's National Stroke Week Strokes are Australia's second single greatest killer and there are four key ways to identify if someone you know or someone around you is suffering from a stroke. The FAST Test which is recognised in Australia by the Stroke Foundation as a way to identify stroke is important to understand as it is a critical time for the individual to get the help they need. Attending to an individual with a stroke as quickly as possible can help the individual with their recovery process.

17.01.2022 It’s time for the weekend Our tip: Keep on moving! Reports have found found that workouts peak on Monday. No surprise -they decline throughout the week, bottoming out on the weekend. Which makes sense: When you’re on a specific schedule during the work week it’s easier to keep exercise on the calendar. But once you hit Friday afternoon, you’re easily convinced to trade the sneakers for a pitcher of sangria. But the lack of movement is partly to blame for the weight gain th...at happens, so it’s important to schedule it in on weekends too. We don’t blame you for dreading the gym on Saturday afternoon so mix things up and take your workouts outdoors, especially with the current forecast. Being outside has some added health benefits, like improved focus, a boost in happiness and lower levels of anxiety. And let's be honest, we’re much more likely to stick to our weekend plans of kayaking or the park than slaving away on the treadmill!

14.01.2022 Healthy Bones Action Week More than a million Australians have Osteoporosis and this number is expected to grow as our population ages. Osteoporosis occurs when our bones lose calcium and other minerals causing them to become fragile and likely to fracture. ... Maintaining health bones is important and to reduce the risk of developing Osteoporosis, doctors recommend we eat plenty of calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, exercise regularly and practice safe sun exposure for adequate vitamin D production. Cheese is a good source of calcium, which we need for bones and teeth as well as regulating muscle and heart functions. Of course for maximum health outcomes we would say stick to the advice to eat two to three serves of dairy (mainly low fat) per day... but it’s all we needed for the green light to get stuck into a cheese platter this weekend!

12.01.2022 Have you had your flu shot yet? Last year, Australia experienced its worst flu season on record. 2019 saw the highest number of influenza cases across the country.... Current vaccines only last three to six months and given the currently circulating virus strains, early immunisation would also mean they may not last through the peak months. The peak period of circulating influenza disease is typically June to September in Australia, however out of season cases do occur as disease can circulate all year round. It’s never too late to vaccinate!

11.01.2022 SPDNMC is wishing you all a happy long weekend! We are OPEN tomorrow from 9am - 5pm Book online or call 7089 6400

With over 86 billion neurons, 2.5 million gigabytes of storage, and over 50,000 thoughts per day, the human brain truly is astonishing.... Here are some human brain facts that will make you think twice!

06.01.2022 Iron deficiency, could you be in the 1 out of 8 of the population affected? Iron is a hardworking little mineral, and it’s so important to include iron-rich food in your diet. Iron’s real superpower is the ability to help red blood cells form oxygen, and it also plays an important role in maintaining good muscle function. If you don’t get enough iron, you can soon start to feel tired and rundown. Interestingly, meat sources of iron are more easily absorbed than plant-based irons. Good sources of iron include; red meat, liver, kidney, chicken, fish, dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, eggs, dried fruits, nuts and seeds and tofu.

04.01.2022 Its that time again the weekend! In light of everyone’s probable ‘silly season’ events - here’s some alcohol myths you should ignore. 1. You can sweat off a hangover - A tiny bit of alcohol may be sweated out of your body over time, but it won’t sober you up or cure the hangover.... 2. Booze warms you up - It actually dehydrates you, lowers your body temperature, and increases your chance of hypothermia. 3. Drinking a glass of water between drinks will keep me from getting drunk - Alternating drinks with water can help stave off dehydration but it will not keep you from getting intoxicated. Again, it really comes down to how much you are drinking. 4. Eating a large meal before drinking alcohol will help reduce the risk of getting drunk - Eating a meal before you go out will only delay the rate of alcohol absorption. If you go on to drink heavily, you will still get drunk. Have a great weekend everyone!

01.01.2022 Happy (almost) Halloween from SPDNMC An SA Health spokesperson admitted this Halloween "might be a little bit different than usual". There are no limits on outdoor gatherings in the state, and private residences may host up to 50 people. SA Health reminded those celebrating to maintain a 1.5m distance from those in different groups, while urging anyone with even the mildest symptoms to stay at home.... "Remember to wear your scariest costume, but please do not go out if you are unwell," the spokesperson said. "Trick or treating can be COVID-safe while still being lots of fun." Happy Haunting!
