21.01.2022 This week UK film Lady Macbeth is showing at the Somerville Auditorium. Its the 1860s and Katherine is the young wife of arrogant northern England landowner Alexander. Kept under her husbands cruel control, Katherine finally has a chance to assert herself when Alexander leaves on an extended trip. A provocative love affair with stableman Sebastian is just the start of Katherines drastic battle of wills with her oppressors, as she goes to increasing lengths to protect her new freedom. Although adapted from a Russian novella, this Lady Macbeth with its stark locations, anti-heroine and dark vengeance feels completely Shakespearean.
