25.01.2022 Dear Friends, What challenging times we are facing. The Covid-19 (Coronavirus) is having a substantial impact on our every-day lives and it is unsure how the coming weeks and months will play out.... Our priority is to maintain a safe environment for our patients and team. We remain in constant communication with our governing bodies to ensure we quickly respond to advice and recommendations. We want to keep you fully informed. 1. Dental practices are one of the safest places to be. Our infection control procedures are of the highest standard and are diligently followed by all members of our team. 2. We are continuing to treat patients for their oral health, albeit with minor changes. Every patient is contacted in regards to Covid-19 (Coronavirus) and if they pose any risk, are rescheduled to a time that it is safe for them to visit the practice. 3. We will not be accepting walk-in patients. 4. We have informed all non-essential visitors to our practice, such as dental reps, to avoid face-to-face meetings until further notice. 5. We have installed hand-sanitiser in the waiting room and removed items such as magazines and toys. What can you do to help? We appreciate your help with mitigating any risk, by: * Telephone us to make your appointments. * If you have recently travelled overseas, feel unwell with a fever and cold symptoms, have been in contact with others who have travelled or feel unwell, please reschedule your appointments with us to a safer time. 23.01.2022 CAUSES OF TOOTH DECAY Everyone has the bacteria that cause tooth decay living in their mouth. When you eat, the bacteria eat too. They feed on sugars in the food and drinks you consume and produce acid, which damages the tooth surface (the enamel). The tooth surface is also being constantly repaired. Saliva contains minerals that help repair the tooth surface. Fluoride, found in toothpaste and most of Victorias drinking water, also helps to repair damage. However, if over ti...me there is more acid damage than repair, a cavity or hole forms in the tooth surface. PREVENTING TOOTH DECAY Everybody with teeth is at risk of tooth decay. You can lower your risk by: brushing teeth regularly using fluoride toothpaste limiting sugars (especially between meals) regularly having your teeth checked by a dentist or other oral health professional. 21.01.2022 Dear Patients and Friends, We have great news. Given the progress that Australia has made to ensure COVID-19 has as small an impact as possible on our communities, dental restrictions have been lifted to level 1.... This is active immediately. Level 1 means we are available to our patients for whatever treatment they require. Our practice is going to maintain two protocols to further ensure the safety of our patients and staff. Protocol 1: We ask that patients who have any symptoms of illness continue to refrain from attending our clinic. Protocol 2: We will continue with the additional infection control measures listed below... Do not bring additional people to your appointment Wait in your car in our car-park and we will come and collect you when it is time to take you through to the surgery Use the provided hand-santitiser upon entrance to the practice Environmental cleaning after each patient Our team have started contacting all patients who had to defer their treatment and are rescheduling their appointments. We will be leaving spaces in our schedule for patients experiencing an emergency. Please do not hesitate to call us to discuss your particular situation. Thank you for working with us during this challenging time. We are so appreciative of your support. Wishing you all health and happiness. Dr Pilar and Dr Gigi

20.01.2022 DENTAL RESTRICTIONS UPDATE The Victoria Branch of the ADA has delivered the wonderful news that dental practices can start providing additional services starting 28th September, with broader services available from the 26th October. We have been restricted to treating patients with an emergency only. However, the lifting of restrictions means we can progressively get back providing services that patients need in order to function effectively and have peace of mind around the...ir oral health. If you require any dental services, contact the practice and we will make the appropriate arrangements in accordance with the ADAVB advice and guidelines. This is great news and our team are so happy to be able to help our patients more with their dental health. Our best wishes to you, Dr Gigi and Dr Pilar

19.01.2022 Great news! Thank you to our Health Minister Greg Hunt! In a major win for ADA advocacy on behalf of its members, dentists (and the entire dental team), along with other frontline healthcare workers, the elderly and aged care staff, are to be included in the first COVID-19 vaccine release from March next year, according to Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt. ada.org.au/Dentists-COVID-vaccine

18.01.2022 Dear Patients and Friends of SFDC, **We can start delivering most dental treatments.** Government and Health Authorities have eased the restrictions of dental practices from Level 3 to Level 2 as of Monday 27th April. ... This means that we can return to performing most dental treatments. As usual, we will be seeing emergency patients. We can also see patients who need: - general check-up and cleaning (cleaning will be performed using a hand instrument rather than the 'ultrasonic' method.) - fillings that should not be delayed (due to the use of the high-speed handpiece, these fillings will be performed 'under rubber dam'. This means with a rubber sheet that isolates the tooth.) - general extractions - orthodontic treatment - management of jaw conditions - denture production and management Our team have started contacting all patients who had to defer their treatment and are rescheduling their appointments. We will be leaving spaces in our schedule for patients experiencing an emergency. Please do not hesitate to call us to discuss your particular situation. We are continuing with our increased infection control protocol. Do not bring additional people to your appointment Wait in your car in our car-park and we will come and collect you when it is time to take you through to the surgery If you have ANY symptoms of illness or have been overseas, tell us. We will make the necessary arrangements. Use the provided hand-santitiser upon entrance to the practice Thank you for working with us during this challenging time. We are so appreciative of your support. Wishing you health and happiness. Dr Pilar, Dr Gigi and team

17.01.2022 Proper brushing takes at least two minutes. Most adults do not come close to brushing that long. To get a feel for the time involved, try using a stopwatch. To properly brush your teeth, use short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gumline, hard-to-reach back teeth, and areas around fillings, crowns or other restoration. Concentrate on thoroughly cleaning each section as follows:... * Clean the outer surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth * Clean the inner surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth * Clean the chewing surfaces * For fresher breath, be sure to brush your tongue, too. What type of toothbrush should I use? Most dental professionals agree that a soft-bristled brush is best for removing plaque and debris from your teeth. Small-headed brushes are also preferable, since they can better reach all areas of the mouth, including hard-to-reach back teeth. For many, a powered toothbrush is a good alternative. It can do a better job of cleaning teeth, particularly for those who have difficulty brushing or who have limited manual dexterity. How important is the toothpaste I use? It is important that you use toothpaste that is right for you. Today there is a wide variety of toothpaste designed for many conditions, including cavities, gingivitis, tartar, stained teeth and sensitivity. Ask your dental professional which toothpaste is right for you. How often should I replace my toothbrush? You should replace your toothbrush when it begins to show wear, or every three months, whichever comes first. It is also very important to change toothbrushes after you have had a cold, since the bristles can collect germs that can lead to reinfection. 17.01.2022 COVID RESTRICTIONS UPDATE We hope you all stay optimistic, safe and healthy during this time. The Victoria Branch of the ADA has now instructed all dental practices in Melbourne Metro to move to Level 3 operations.... This means we are only able to see patients who are experiencing an emergency dental condition. We are also very limited in terms of the type of treatments we can perform. The treatment we will need to delay are: - scale & cleanings, - crown work, - fillings (unless an emergency repair to a broken tooth), and - complex extractions. We will be contacting all patients with appointments and make new arrangements. If you have any questions, we encourage you to call and chat with us. We can explain everything and address any concerns you may be experiencing with your oral health. In the meantime, we encourage you to keep healthy by eating well, exercising regularly and laughing out loud at every chance you get. Our best wishes to you, Dr Gigi and Dr Pilar

16.01.2022 Top 10 Reasons to Smile Every Day! 1. SMILING MAKES US ATTRACTIVE We are naturally drawn to people who smile. There is a real physical attraction factor linked to the act of smiling. Not surprisingly, more severe or negative facial expressions like frowns, scowls and grimaces actually work in the opposite manner, effectively pushing people away. Instead, use the attraction power of your smile to draw people in....Continue reading

14.01.2022 Dear Patients and Friends, Déjà vu...Victoria is locked down again. We hope you all stay optimistic, safe and well during this time.... Happily, the restrictions have not extended to the practice of dentistry. We are still operating at Level 1, which means we are here for you for your regular check-ups and cleanings and for any routine dental services you may require. We would like to reassure you that dental practices have always been an example of high standards when it comes to infection control. Over the years, we have responded swiftly and successfully to public health threats. Covid-19 is no different. Dental practices have adopted additional measures to ensure the safety of their patients and staff and these will remain in place for as long as is necessary. We are continuing with our triage protocol. Only allowing healthy people into our practice is one very effective way of staying safe. Also, while we encourage all of our patients to feel confident in scheduling needed treatment, we do ask that you come to your appointment alone. If the appointment is for a child, then one parent or guardian is welcome to accompany them. Dr Gigi and Dr Pilar are among the first to hear of any changes to the level of dentistry we can perform. You will be informed immediately should any announcements be made. In the meantime, we encourage you to keep healthy by eating well, exercising regularly and laughing out loud at every chance you get. Our best wishes to you, Dr Gigi and Dr Pilar

08.01.2022 COVID RESTRICTIONS UPDATE We hope you all stay optimistic, safe and healthy during this time. The Level 4 restrictions in Victoria had us concerned that we would need to reduce our capacity to see patients. However, wonderfully, dental services are considered an essential service and is one of the industries that are encouraged to remain open.... We have our additional processes to ensure the safety of our patients and team. That is: - if you have any symptoms of illness or have been exposed to the virus, we will delay your treatment - upon arrival, call us from the car-park and we will clear the waiting room for you - wear a face covering, unless you have an exemption - come alone to your appointment (children to be accompanied by only one other person) - we will temperature-test you upon entry to the practice - there is hand sanitiser for your application upon entry to the practice - if you reside in a suburb that is listed with higher rates of transmission, we will either delay your treatment or modify your treatment so it falls in line with Dental Level 2 services.

08.01.2022 Laughter is good for your health. Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.... Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the bodys natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain. Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. Laughter burns calories. OK, so its no replacement for going to the gym, but one study found that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn approximately 40 calorieswhich could be enough to lose three or four pounds over the course of a year. Laughter lightens angers heavy load. Nothing diffuses anger and conflict faster than a shared laugh. Looking at the funny side can put problems into perspective and enable you to move on from confrontations without holding onto bitterness or resentment. Laughter may even help you to live longer. A study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humour outlived those who dont laugh as much. The difference was particularly notable for those battling cancer. #dental #laughter #healthy #immunity #dentistsomerville

05.01.2022 Teeth grinding (bruxism) is the involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth. It generally happens during sleep, but some people experience it when they are awake. Teeth grinding can cause a range of oral health problems, which may include: - cracked tooth enamel... - excessive wear and tear on the teeth - broken teeth or restorations - strain on the joints and soft tissue of the jaw joint - enlargement of the jaw muscles (rare). SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS The signs and symptoms of teeth grinding include: - grinding sounds while the person is asleep - headache, jaw joint or ear pain - aching (or ‘dancing’) teeth particularly upon waking - aching or stiffness of the face and temples upon waking - aching or stiffness in the jaws while chewing particularly during breakfast - clenching the jaw when angry, anxious or concentrating - sensitive teeth - cracked or chipped tooth enamel - tooth indentations on the tongue - raised tissue on the cheek caused by cheek biting wobbly teeth. CAUSES Some of the factors that may trigger grinding include: - emotional stress, such as anger or anxiety - mental concentration - physical effort or stress, such as illness, nutritional deficiency or dehydration - incorrect tooth alignment - drug misuse (particularly amphetamines) - eruption of teeth (babies and children). WHAT HYOU SHOULD DO If you think you may be grinding your teeth, see your oral health professional as soon as possible. They will examine your teeth and may take x-rays to check the severity of the problem and the damage done to teeth and bone. They might also suggest some therapy to assist in removal or reduction in the habit. Source: Dental Health Services Victoria https://www.dhsv.org.au//teeth-tips-and-fac/teeth-grinding

04.01.2022 The health of your gums is easily determined by looking to see if they are pink and firm and do not bleed easily when brushing and flossing. However, the health of the bone that your teeth sit is is more difficult. You can develop advanced gum disease (periodontitis) without many obvious symptoms. This kind of condition erodes the bone away and can lead to eventual tooth loss. Checking for signs of gum disease is one of many reasons why it is advised to go along to your denti...st for regular check-ups. Call Glenn at Somerville Family Dental Care and arrange an appointment if you have any of the following: - bleeding gums - loose teeth - bad taste in your mouth - receding gums See more
