22.01.2022 In this very special Inspirational Old Girl story, OGA Secretary and current Somerville House teacher Gaye Pitman (class of 1971) writes about her life long friendship with veteran teacher and author Pamela Davenport (class of 1954). "The opportunity to join Pamela on all of her Somerville House Ancient History tours was a privilege that I hold dear. Not only did I explore countries that I may not otherwise have even entertained visiting (think of Iran, Tunisia and Syria as e...xamples), but at times, I shared hotel rooms with Pamela. Apart from the fun and laughter that ensued, Pamela always had more stories to share and many was the night that we stayed up later than we should, listening to her regaling us with tales of days long past. I visited Pamela at her home recently and her face glowed as she spoke to me about her life, particularly in regards to her beloved School. I have had a very fortunate life, she said. I loved teaching and I loved the girls." 17.01.2022 Wondering if you have time to be a mentor? We understand time is a bit of a lose concept these days but we have designed the program in its inaugural year to be fully undertaken via teleconference / telephone. We have lots of support structures around our sessions, but really, the scheduling of those sessions is self-determined between the mentor and mentee. As a guide, we recommend 2 x sessions a month, running for about an hour each time. There will likely be a bit of h...omework for the mentee to do in between sessions and we also have some master classes in the works so as everyone can develop further skills and knowledge to complement them on their journey. Anyone who has undertaken a mentoring program in the past as either a mentee or mentor know how supremely rewarding it can be. Now more than ever we need these experiences and hope to see you in the program! Applications for the Somerville House OGA Mentoring Program will extend through until this Friday, 22nd May. We had a flurry of applications late last week and understand that both career and working from home situations for some people may have be a little uncertain over the last month. We hope you are all finding some clarity and inspiration now and invite you to apply to become a mentee or mentor in the program. Applications are quite simple; just a few questions so we can gauge your goals and experience and endeavour to make the best match. You can find the application forms here: https://www.somervillehouseoga.com.au/opportunities A few key dates: Applications close Friday 22nd May Mentor/mentee to be matched and confirmed by Monday 25th May Program overview and induction via Zoom Wednesday 27th May (TBC) You can start scheduling your sessions immediately after that initial induction! Completion of mentoring program end of November.

09.01.2022 Do you have a mentor? A big thanks to Old Girl, author, speaker and journalist Jillian Kingsford Smith for her work developing the OGA's new mentoring program! Here are her top 3 reasons why we all need a mentor: 1. Good mentors help you set a measurable goal. This is a must. Without setting goals, youll most likely stagnate or go backward. Developing goals that stretch a person even make them feel a little uncomfortable can create a bit of positive anxiety. Mentors can... help you find the clarity to define and then achieve your goals. Without a set strategy of changes or actions to take to achieve your goals, your goals are more wishful thinking than achievable targets. 2. Good mentors never let you settle and become complacent. Consistent goal setting is essential for achieving new life success. It challenges us to always move forward towards new heights. 3. Good mentors will share personal experiences that inspire and motivate you. These inspirational teachings, if done right, can help you use your experience and potentially prevent unnecessary mistakes. Be vulnerable and open to sharing what intimidates you or concerns you as it relates to your goals or business development challenges; vulnerability will help your mentor share success stories that will resonate with you as the mentee. Join the OGA Mentoring Program as a mentee or mentor! Applications can be downloaded from https://www.somervillehouseoga.com.au/opportunities and close on Friday 8th May. #somervilleoga #mentor #somervillehouse #connections

"Clients want to know you're there for them - even if you've temporarily closed, or are trading differently. Showcasing what you've been doing, or how the business or service will look after COVID, can really help build or maintain your core community of supporters," she said. 08.01.2022 It is with sadness that we advise of the passing of Isabel Bauer (Bloomer, class of 1955). Isabel is integral to what Somerville House is today; she was OGA's longest standing President, leading our alumni for over 20 years and serving on the Committee since the 1970s. Whether Isabel was holding a fundraising event - or a protest placard to save our school - she was a dignified and passionate advocate for female education, a strong leader and fierce supporter of her fellow So...merville sisters. Somerville House remains where it currently stands today, due to Isabels legendary protection. Her generous legacy also lives on in the many gifts and capital works projects she led the Foundation and Old Girls to fund, including the Seymour Library and Bauer Building (the new boarding house). Isabel achieved much in her life both within and outside the Somerville community, and a detailed tribute from the Old Girls will be forthcoming. Isabel's daughters Rebecca Bauer (1988), Miriam Musgrave (1990) - and granddaughters Alexandra (grade 7) and Emma (grade 4) - will hold a private service this Friday at the Somerville House Chapel, to celebrate her life. Attendance is limited to invitation only, due to current restrictions. Isabel continued to actively serve on the OGA Committee, attend meetings and contribute to robust discussions about Somerville's past, present and future - right through to the very end. Forever a 'Somerville girl', Isabel was deeply loved by our community and will be immensely missed #somervilleoga #somervillehouse #somervillesisters #vale

02.01.2022 As part of our response to COVID, the OGA teamed with the School to support our isolated and senior Old Girls. Somerville staff and OGA committee members made hundreds of wellbeing check-in calls and connected members for in-kind assistance, professional services and accommodation where needed. The current year six students also engaged in a lovely pen pal activity, writing uplifting letters to our senior Old Girls (pictured). Our thanks to the girls and their teachers for t...he beautiful hand crafted cards and drawings! We hope our Old Girl community has 'felt the love' during this time While we have been able to connect with thousands of members, there is still a number who we have not been able to reach, due to outdated contact details. Please contact us if you are aware of an Old Girl who has not heard from us, so we can reach out to see if they'd like to update their contact details wit us.
