07.01.2022 Amongst all the panic and worrying over the coronavirus and how it will affect our lives, as someone who was living in Beijing when it was impacting China the m...ost, I would like to shed light on what living in lockdown was like. I dont know if anybody will find this insightful, but I hope it will prepare you for what might happen where ever you are. When the lockdown began we were instructed to stay home and isolate. When this first happened much like what is happening in Australia now, happened in China. There was a lot of panic buying, people rushed to the shops to make sure they got enough to last weeks. This was unnecessary. While many business were closed during the lockdown and were told to work from home if possible, all business that were essential for a functioning society such as supermarkets, pharmacies and things of those nature were business as usual. Even though we were all self-isolating that didnt mean we couldnt go outside. If we needed to pop to the shops to get some milk, toilet paper, noodles, whatever you were allowed to do so. You just had to make sure you were wearing a mask and gloves. Once people figured this out the supermarkets went back to normal, no one was hoarding anything and people would just buy as they need just as they did before the outbreak. Every time you entered a building during the lockdown period your temperature would be checked, your name, phone number and travel history was also recorded. This was to help track down people if a case was reported, that way everyone who might have been in contact with that person could be located to make sure they get testing too. If you did go out upon returning home you would dispose of your gloves and masks, inverse your jacket, hang it up and go wash your hands. During this period guests were not allowed to come over to your place. In our community if you could not prove you lived in one of the apartments security wouldnt let you in. It can get incredibly boring during the lockdown period, and you might find that you catch up on all your TV shows and movies you missed much quicker than you thought. During this time maybe try and start a little project like a painting or perfecting the brownie, also try to keep in contact with friends by playing games online or even just doing a skype call. All in all, there is no need to panic. Youll be able to get toilet paper. And everything may seem scary on the surface level, but if everyone does their part society can still function smoothly. I know I just rambled a bit, but I hope reading this helps even just a little. I hope everyone stays safe! Jin
