25.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1960 - 60 years ago exactly - a girl called Aimee Mann was born in Bon Air, Virginia. After finishing high school she enrolled in Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, but dropped out before finishing and formed her first band The Young Snakes, a Boston "noise-art punk" trio with which she played bass and sang vocals. When that band split after a solitary EP Mann formed the new wave outfit Til Tuesday in 1983, and their debut album Voices Carry ...(1985) made an immediate impact, the dreamily catchy title track rising to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and helping earn the band the Best New Talent gong at the MTV Video Music Awards. Til Tuesday released two more albums but never made the same commercial impact - during this period Mann also sang vocals with Geddy Lee on the 1987 Rush single Time Stand Still - and she eventually disbanded the group in 1990 to embark on a solo career more inspired by the acoustic guitar music she had long loved, artists such as Leonard Cohen, Stephen Sondheim, Fiona Apple and Jimmy Webb. She signed with Geffen and although her first two albums - Whatever (1993) and Im With Stupid (1995) - got strong reviews they both sold poorly, and it wasnt until 1999 when she was asked to record original material for the soundtrack to the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia that she really hit her straps, that movie earning Academy Award and Grammy Award nominations for the song Save Me after which she left Geffen and started her own label SuperEgo Records. Since then Mann hasnt looked back, releasing seven more acclaimed solo albums - the last of which, 2017s Mental Illness, won her a Grammy for Best Folk Album - and worked alongside many of the biggest names in the business as she consolidated her reputation as a songwriter par excellence (in 2006 she was was named one of the worlds ten greatest living songwriters by NPR). Shes had an amazing career which is still going strong - and its worth pointing out that amongst her growing list of acting credits she appeared in 1998 cult classic The Big Lebowski as a nihilist who sacrifices one of her toes for the cause - happy 60th birthday Aimee Mann! #8september1960 #60years #bonairvirginia #aimeemann #theyoungsnakes #tiltuesday #voicescarry #soloartist #legendarysongwriter #grammywinner #nihilist #happybirthday #sonicsherpa See more

25.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 2000 - 20 years ago exactly - legendary Brisbane rockers Powderfinger released their classic fourth album Odyssey Number Five. Theyd already established themselves as one of Australias biggest bands with 1998s Internationalist but this would take the five-piece to a whole new level, having spent six weeks in the studio with producer Nick DiDia (whod also done Internationalist) to hone their songs to perfection. The album was preceded by the track The...se Days which - while never released as a single - had featured on the soundtrack to Aussie film Two Hands and got so much traction it actually finished at #1 on the Triple J Hottest 100 chart in 1999, the prefect foundation for what was to come (My Happiness would also top the Hottest 100 the following year). Four subsequent singles were released from the album - My Kind Of Scene, My Happiness, Like A Dog and the double a-side The Metre/Waiting For The Sun - and all got plenty of airplay, ensuring that Odyssey Number Five would be Powderfingers second consecutive #1 album. Critics were rather mixed on the album, with Aussie pundits largely singing its praises while overseas critics were a bit more lukewarm, such as AllMusic who called the album (perhaps unfairly) "little more than a slightly off-base perspective into the world of mid-90s American grunge". Nonetheless it was the album which saw Powderfinger get their most traction in the US, embarking on a lengthy tour (both headlining and supporting Coldplay) and getting a fair bit of traction on the radio (specifically with My Happiness), and in time it would become the bands first album to crack the American charts. Back home Odyssey Number Five swept all before it, winning gongs at the 2001 ARIA Awards for Album of the Year, Highest Selling Album, Best Rock Album, Best Cover Art and Best Group (My Happiness also won the award for Single of the Year, while Like A Dog was nominated for Highest Selling Single and Best Video), while the album was named Album of the Year by Rolling Stone Australia readers, with My Happiness taking out Song of the Year and Powderfinger receiving the Band of the Year award. In 2011 the album was also ranked at #1 in Triple Js Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time poll and it remains a beloved treasure for Powderfinger fans - and lovers of Oz rock - everywhere: happy 20th birthday Odyssey Number Five! #4september2000 #20years #powderfinger #odysseynumberfive #brisbanesfinest #ozrocklegends #brisbanerockrocks #happybirthday #sonicsherpa See more

23.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 2000 - 20 years ago exactly - US singer-songwriter Ryan Adams released his revered debut solo album Heartbreaker on Bloodshot Records. Hed spent the last seven years fronting acclaimed North Carolinian alt-country outfit Whiskeytown - whod released three strong albums with their revolving line-up before splitting when their final album Pneumonia (2001) was exiled into limbo following a label merger - and he made the genius decision to recruit rising Ameri...cana stars Gillian Welch and David Rawlings to accompany him in the studio (the great Emmylou Harris also appears on backing vocals on Oh My Sweet Carolina). Adams recorded Heartbreaker over 14 days at Woodland Studios in Nashville, Tennessee with rising star Ethan Johns in the production chair. The albums 15 devastatingly sad break-up songs are heartfelt and played with a loose, laidback conviction, Welch and Rawlings bringing a bluegrass tinge in places, the overall result immediate and compelling. Strangely despite including a cache of enduring classics no singles were lifted from the album, and even though it being ravenously-received by Adams existing fanbase it didnt immediately spread much further than that, not bothering the charts at all in the States but straggling into #183 in the UK (and #67 in Ireland). Reviews were mixed: some critics gushed the albums praises such as The A.V. Club ("Adams has recorded an intimate, largely quiet record that indisputably establishes his identity as an independent singer-songwriter") and Pitchfork ("an album of astonishing musical proficiency, complete honesty and severe beauty") while others didnt fall under its spell, such as Rolling Stone ("[Adams songs] too often fail to rise above their plain-spoken details to take on the symbolic power he yearns for") and Village Voice critic Robert Christgau ("an album that isnt worth your time or money"). Heartbreaker was nominated for the 2001 Shortlist Music Prize, but over the ensuing decades it has taken on classic status in the Americana genre - even Elton John famously declared that the album helped rejuvenate his career, and once appeared playing songs from it alongside Adams himself. Many of the albums songs have been covered and/or appeared in films and TV shows, and it was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and placed at #23 on Paste Magazines 2009 The 50 Best Albums of the Decade list. 22.01.2022 BILLY BRAGG 'SHINE A LIGHT' SALE! We recently nabbed a heap of vinyl copies of the excellent 2016 album 'Shine A Light: Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad' by legendary UK creative Billy Bragg and his good friend from across the pond Joe Henry. It's a wonderful collection of tunes inspired by - and recorded during - the pair's epic train journey across the American continent, it usually retails for around $50 but we have copies going for $35 (you can grab in th...e shop or at bit.ly/3s2YAGn). Belly interviewed the great Billy back at the time about their journey and the resulting tracks (pun intended) which you can read at bit.ly/3awjvvA and don't forget that these two also crossed paths recently on the Rewind With Steve Bell podcast discussing the fertile early years of Bragg's career, which you can check at bit.ly/37lgigf! #vinylsale #billybragg #joehenry #shinealight #fieldrecordingsfromthegreatamericanrailroad #classicalbum #epicjourney #trainstrainstrains #grababargain #whilestockslast #sonicsherpa See more

22.01.2022 CATCH O THE DAY! Erics Trip were an excellent Canadian indie rock outfit from the early-90s, and while their name was taken from a Sonic Youth song their music was predominantly more laidback and lo-fi than this may suggest. Their excellent third album Purple Blue came out in 1996 on the great Sub Pop Records label and was slightly heavier than their past fare with tinges of psych poking through the melange, and this 2018 reissue is fittingly on purple coloured vinyl making it a treat for the eyes as well as the ears! #catchotheday #ericstrip #purpleblue #subpoprecords #90sindierockclassic #limitededition #colouredvinyl #checkit #sonicsherpa

21.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 2000 - 20 years ago exactly - US rocker Huey Lewis and actress Gwyneth Paltrow released their cover of Smokey Robinsons 1979 classic Cruisin, from the soundtrack to the movie Duets in which they both played starring roles. The film was centred around the cutthroat world of competitive karaoke, and while the movie itself proved forgettable the soundtrack was a smash hit in Australia - compared to the rest of the world at any rate - and while the Cruisin... single failed to breach the actual singles chart in America (it did top the Adult Contemporary chart) it spent two weeks at #1 Down Under, as well as five weeks at #1 in New Zealand. Its basically inexplicable why Cruisin was such a massive hit in Australia and New Zealand and did nothing anywhere else on the planet - apart from going to #4 in Iceland and reaching the Top 40 in Poland - but its success meant that Paltrows cover of Bette Davis Eyes from the same film was also released as a single in Australia only and it went to #3 on our singles charts (eventually going double platinum), so maybe as a nation we need to take a long hard look in the room of mirrors... #11september2000 #20years #hueylewis #gwynethpaltrow #cruisin #duetssoundtrack #smokeyrobinsoncover #australiannumberonehit #whywhywhy #havealookatyourselfaustralia #terribledownunderhits #sonicsherpa See more

21.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1970 - 50 years ago exactly - UK metal legends Black Sabbath released their seminal second album Paranoid. The bands pioneering self-titled debut album had only dropped the previous February but theyd rushed back into the studio to capitalise on that early traction, holing up in Londons Island Studios with producer Roger Bain and going to work to work. The albums working title had been War Pigs after the eventual opening track, but when the sessions wer...e nearly over they whipped up one final track in the studio in 20 minutes - all the other songs had been spawned from improvisational jams during live sets - and called the song Paranoid, the label convinced them it had hit potential and it became the album title as well. The label proved prescient as the ensuing single Paranoid went to #4 on the UK charts - their only ever Top 10 single - but this eventually turned Sabbath off trying to be commercial, guitarist Tommy Iommi remembering later, "That single attracted screaming kids. We saw people dancing when we played it and we decided that we shouldnt do singles for a long while after that to stay true to the fans whod liked us before wed become popular." Nonetheless the single was a huge boost to the albums popularity and it raced to #1 on the UK album charts (it would peak at #12 in America when released there in 1971, despite virtually no airplay). Paranoid the album has since gone on to be widely recognised as a classic of the metal genre, with AllMusic citing it as "one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal albums of all time", which "defined the sound and style of heavy metal more than any other record in rock history", while Blender said it was "the greatest metal album of all time" and Rolling Stone offered that "Sabbath ruled for bummed-out kids in the Seventies" and "nearly every heavy-metal and extreme rock band of the last three decades", including Metallica, Nirvana and Slipknot, "owes a debt of worship" to Iommis "crushing" guitar riffs, Ward and Butlers "Visigoth rhythm section" and Osbournes "agonized bray" on tracks such as Paranoid, Iron Man and War Pigs. Paranoid was ranked at #131 on Rolling Stone magazines list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - that magazine calling it the "greatest metal album ever" in a 2017 poll - and it was also ranked #6 on Guitar World magazines list of The Greatest 100 Guitar Albums of All Time. As well as it being arguably the most influential album in the history of metal Paranoid remains Black Sabbaths best-selling album, having now shifted well in excess of four million units in the States alone. #18september1970 #50years #blacksabbath #paranoid #notodifficultsecond #metalclassic #heavyicon #ozzyrules #happybirthday #sonicsherpa See more

21.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1990 - 30 years ago exactly - lauded Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young released his 18th solo album Ragged Glory (also the sixth album with his backing band Crazy Horse). The album sessions took place in April 1990 at Youngs Broken Arrow ranch, using a unique method whereby they ran through a set of pre-selected songs a couple of times a day over the course of more than two weeks - never playing them in the same order - and then at the end they combed th...rough and selected what they considered the best takes of each track, which Young later said, "took analysis out of the game during the sessions, allowing the Horse to not think". The result was a loose but hard-rocking album - terrain hed covered before with Crazy Horse on albums such as Zuma (1975) - featuring some extended guitar jams which pushed a couple of tracks beyond the 10-minute mark. Critics were for the most part extremely positive: Rolling Stone called Ragged Glory "a monument to the spirit of the garage - to the pursuit of passion over precision" while the Los Angeles Times deemed the record "garage rock" and "impressive primitivism coming from a 45-year-old rock icon", while more recently AllMusic offered, "despite the volume, the tunes were catchy, with strong melodies and good choruses, and they were given over to love, humour, and warm reminiscence". It only went as far as #31 on the US Billboard 200 album chart but was voted album of the year in The Village Voices annual Pazz & Jop critics poll, and in 2010 it was selected by Rolling Stone as the 77th best album of the 1990s and was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. #9september1990 #30years #neilyoung #raggedglory #neilyoungandcrazyhorse #garagerock #rockchameleon #classicalbum #theyoungones #sonicsherpa See more

19.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 2000 - 20 years ago exactly - the film Almost Famous opened in US cinemas, following the travails of a young music reporter going on tour with fictional 70s rock band Stillwater. Written and directed by actual music critic Cameron Crowe - a semi-autobiographical look at his own teenage beginnings at Rolling Stone magazine and his experiences touring with rock bands Poco, the Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, and Lynyrd Skynyrd - it also featured 7...0s rocker Peter Frampton serving as a technical consultant on the film. As well as being a realistic look at life behind the scenes on the road, the film also had a killer soundtrack comprising some of the many of the songs which appear in the film by an array of artists including Elton John, Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel and even Stillwater themselves (whose ranks included Mark Kozelek and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready). The soundtrack was awarded the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media and the film itself - while not breaking even at the box office - also received widespread acclaim from critics and received four Academy Awards nominations, including a win for Best Original Screenplay. It also won two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actress Motion Picture (for star Kate Hudson). In a 2016 international poll conducted by BBC, Almost Famous was ranked the 79th greatest film since 2000, while in a Hollywood Reporter 2014 list voted on by "studio chiefs, Oscar winners and TV royalty", Almost Famous was ranked the 71st greatest film of all time. As Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote at the time, "Not since A Hard Days Night has a movie caught the thrumming exuberance of going where the music takes you." #13september2000 #20years #almostfamous #ustheatricalrelease #stillwater #cameroncrowe #musiccritic #rollingstonereporter #70srock #lifeontheroad #iamagoldengod #sonicsherpa See more

17.01.2022 CATCH O’ THE DAY! Excellent Melbourne rockers The Peep Temple quietly started their hiatus a few years ago and after the rhythm section popped up as Shepparton Airplane the band’s frontman Blake Scott recently released his solo debut ‘Niscitam’ through Wing Sing/Metropolitan Groove Merchants). It’s a completely different beast to TPT but an eclectic and trippy ride, Doug Wallen gave it a great 4 star review in The Guardian and I particularly liked this bit: Sounding as exhausted by the vastness of the Australian landscape as he is by the crushing pace of modern life, Scott externalises his fears and anxieties, often distorting them in size and portent to complete the process of separation. 08.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1970 - 50 years ago exactly - the great Jimi Hendrix performed onstage for the final time ever when he jumped in with Eric Burdon (of The Animals fame) and his new outfit War at Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club in London. War were in the midst of a residency and Hendrix - whod run into Burdon a few days earlier - had been originally invited to jam the night before but had turned up too out of it to play, but on this occasion he was by all accounts in fine form. They r...an through extended versions of two songs which had been recorded for Wars debut album - Memphis Slims Mother Earth and John D. Loudermilks Tobacco Road - on which the legendary guitar player was described as "flying". Hendrix chatted briefly with an NME reporter after the jam and then disappeared into the night with his partner, tragically dying less than two days later following an accidental overdose of sleeping pills at the age of just 27. #16septemeber1970 #50years #jimihendrix #finalperformance #ronniescottsjazzclub #londonuk #ericburdonandwar #jamsession #guitarlegend #ripjimi #sonicsherpa See more

08.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1996 - 25 years ago exactly - Pulp frontman Jarvis Crocker was arrested after invading the stage at the BRIT Awards during Michael Jackson's performance of 'Earth Song' and mooning the King Of Pop. Cocker waved his ass for a good couple of minutes - while waving his behind him in a "wafting gesture" - before being chased from the stage, and was subsequently arrested and rushed to a police station and kept there until 3am under allegations that he said were to d...o assaulting some kids" (before eventually being released without formal charge, apparently after David Bowie's people - who were filming the legend receive his own award on the night - provided clear footage of the incident which proved Cocker innocent of such impropriety). While most people didn't really seem to notice the protest during the actual ceremony once it was widely reported after the fact a massive controversy erupted in the press, with many conservatives dismayed by the perceived disrespect and others arguing that the singer should be lauded for his action (such as Oasis founder Noel Gallagher who stated publicly that Cocker should receive an MBE). My actions were are form of protest at the way Michael Jackson sees himself as some kind of Christ-like figure with the power of healing, Cocker related in a statement shortly afterwards. The music industry allows him to indulge his fantasies because of his wealth and power. People go along with it even though they know it’s a bit sick. I just couldn’t go along with it anymore. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision brought on by boredom and frustration". Jackson himself later offered on the incident, I'm sickened, saddened, shocked, upset, cheated and angry, but immensely proud that the cast remained professional and the show went on. Jackson was at the ceremony to collect his BRIT Award for Artist of a Generation but - while the incident has since become widely recognised as one of the defining moments of the entire Britpop movement - Cocker wasn't invited back to the BRIT Awards until 2007. 08.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 2000 - 20 years ago exactly - Rage Against The Machine bassist Tim Commerford was arrested after disrupting the MTV Video Awards in protest of Limp Bizkit being awarded the Best Rock Video gong for their single Break Stuff. Rage Against The Machine had also been nominated in the same category for their Michael Moore-directed clip for Sleep Now In The Fire and when they were beaten in the category Commerford rushed the stage as their rivals received their aw...ard and climbed the fake palm tree being used as stage decorations (with Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst taunting him to jump). The awards continued on and Commerford eventually came down of his own accord - immediately arrested by police and spending the night in jail - and its believed that the incident contributed to RATM splitting up less than a month later, with frontman Zach de la Rocha offering in a statement, "I feel that it is now necessary to leave Rage because our decision-making process has completely failed. It is no longer meeting the aspirations of all four of us collectively as a band, and from my perspective, has undermined our artistic and political ideal." #7september2000 #20years #mtvvideoawards #rageagainstthemachine #timcommerford #arrested #limpbizkit #breakstuff #stageinvasion #numetalwars #chalkitup #sonicsherpa See more

08.01.2022 ALSO ON THIS DAY in 1995 - 25 years ago exactly - former Beatle Paul McCartney and his wife Linda made their debut on The Simpsons when the series seven episode 'Lisa The Vegetarian' made its television debut. In the episode Lisa decides to become a vegetarian after bonding with a lamb at a petting zoo, and although she'd ridiculed by most of Springfield for the decision she finds support in Apu and then the McCartneys, who she meets in a secret garden on the roof of the Kwik...-E-Mart. As well as insisting as a condition of the appearance that Lisa remains a vegetarian for the duration of the show - vegetarianism being one of their pet causes - McCartney also helped squeeze some other great jokes into the episode which played on Beatles tropes, such as recording an actual recipe for "a really ripping lentil soup" and inserting it backwards into McCartney's solo track 'Maybe I'm Amazed' which played over the credits, a potpourri which also included Paul reciting the phrase, "Oh, and by the way I'm actually alive" into the hidden joke message. Strangely McCartney was the last of the living Beatles to visit Springfield, with Ringo Starr making the first appearance in 1991 and George Harrison following him in 1993. #15october1995 #25years #paulmccartney #lindamccartney #thesimpsons #lisathevegetarian #kwikiemartsecretgarden #awonderfulmagicalanimal #sonicsherpa See more

07.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1970 - 50 years ago - founding member, guitarist and songwriter for revered US boogie-rock outfit Canned Heat, Allan "Blind Owl" Wilson, died in mysterious circumstances at the age of just 27 (in the process becoming one of the earliest members of the famed 27 Club). Canned Heat were on a high - having just come off a successful set at Woodstock which had exponentially lifted the young bands profile, plus theyd just finished cutting an album with one of the...ir idols John Lee Hooker - but Wilson was a massive introvert whod been battling serious depression, even trying to take his life earlier that year by driving his car off an LA highway. One of his other quirks was that he was an avid nature lover and often preferred to sleep rough outside than in a bed, which is what was happening on his fateful final night when he slept on a hillside behind bandmate Bob Hites Topanga Canyon home. When his lifeless body was found the next morning his hands were crossed over his chest and there was a bottle of the barbiturate Seconal by his side, and while the coroner eventually gave the official cause of death as an accidental overdose of barbiturates, his bands founding drummer Fito de la Parra - who leads Canned Heat to this day - has often said he believes Wilson committed suicide. Wilson - who at that stage had written and sung lead on the bands two biggest singles, On The Road Again and Going Up The Country - was followed into the 27 Club shortly after when Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, thus setting the sad institution in motion. 07.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1990 - 30 years ago exactly - young UK shoegaze outfit RIDE released their acclaimed debut album 'Nowehere' on Alan McGee's Creation Records. The Oxford four-piece had formed in 1988 and been signed to Creation after The Jesus & Mary Chain's frontman Jim Reid passed their demo to McGee, and had already released three strong EPs in 1990 - the second two of which, 'Play' and 'Fall', cracked the UK Top 40 (a first for Creation) - before it came time to make their ...first album. They hit the London's Blackwing Studios and tracked the album live with producer Marc Waterman (although Waterman would have a breakdown at the end of the sessions, leaving Alan Moulder to mix the album). Even though it was Ride's debut the EPs had signalled a massive sense of anticipation, one that NME didn't seem to be ale to transcend, offering, "1990 has stood back and watched Ride arrive everywhere, dragging the guitar from the gutter and proving that being baggy and bloated isn't actually a requisite trait to traipse into the (s)limelight. The debut album is their trickiest proposition yet. In a sense, Ride have dug their own graves and overseen the final ceremony. They've almost been too good for their own good." 'Nowhere' would rise to #11 on the UK album charts - a sensational effort for an indie band at the time - and has taken on even greater import over the years as its legacy has grown: AllMusic has cited the album as one of the greatest albums of the shoegazing genre, it was ranked #74 on Pitchfork's list of the Top 100 Albums of the 1990s and it was also included in the 2010 book '1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die'. #15october1990 #30years #ride #nowhere #classicdebut #shoegazeclassic #sonicsherpa See more

07.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1980 - 40 years ago exactly - rising Australian rockers INXS released their elf-titled debut album on local independent label Deluxe Records. They'd signed a five album deal with them the previous year, and having released their debut single 'Simple Simon' in May had continued their guerrilla recording for what would become their debut long-player. Given a budget of $10,000 the band continued to play their one or two shows a night around Sydney during the pub r...ock boom and then after the gigs would head to Trafalgar Studios and record until dawn with co-producer Duncan McGuire. The band were still striving to find what would become their signature sound, peddling a more ska-new wave influenced pop vibe with all songwriting credited to the entire band. They got a bit of traction with the album's sole single 'Just Keep Walking' - which peaked at #38 giving INXS their first Top 40 hit - while the album just scraped into the national Top 30 album chart. It's hard to find contemporaneous reviews, but ones written in the interim aren't exactly kind, with AllMusic offering, "Although Michael Hutchence already exuded a powerful vocal charisma, the only time 'INXS' springs to life is when the group hints at the R&B and dance roots that would form the basis of their biggest hits", while the 2004 The New Rolling Stone Album Guide states, "On 'INXS' Hutchence's Jagger-esque vocals are already very developed, but the fusion of Kirk Pengilly's saxophone and the rhythm section's big beats doesn't quite come off". Hutchence himself would later recall of their debut, "I'm not a great fan of the first album. It's naïve and kinda cute, almost. It's these young guys struggling for a sound. All I can hear is what was going to happen later and it's probably an interesting album because of that". Nonetheless back in those days bands were almost expected to take a while to develop their sound, and it wasn't long until INXS were on track to become the behemoth that took Aussie rock to the world and would go on to sell 70 million albums worldwide. #13october1980 #40years #inxs #inxs #selftitleddebut #deluxerecords #justkeepwalking #firsthit #firstofmany #ozrocklegends #sonicsherpa See more

07.01.2022 ARE TISM BACK? So there's an apparent resurgence of the great This is Serious Mum (one of Belly's fave bands ever) in which they're re-releasing their music on vinyl, with a new live album (and an album with silence on both sides) the first cabs off the rank (if you can believe anything they say). The most interesting thing about it all is that the magnificently waffling diatribe press release which accompanies the news - just like they'd do in "the olden days", sigh - is signed RHB, which is obviously the acronym for Ron Hitler-Barassi (the band's lanky co-frontman and spoken word annihilator). So if Ron's back in the fold are TISM actually back? As they used to say in the classics 'use many, buy lots'... #tism #thisisseriousmum #aretheyback #godhelpusall #rhbbackintown #itsnovel #itsunique #itsshithouse #sonicsherpa

06.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1975 - 45 years ago exactly - the epic six-minute song suite 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by UK rockers Queen went to #1 on the UK singles chart, where it would remain for nine weeks (semi-ironically knocked off top spot by ABBA's 'Mama Mia', that title also a prominent lyric in the classic Queen hit). The lead single from Queen's 1975 album 'A Night At The Opera', the innovative song had been penned by the band's frontman Freddie Mercury over the course of several year...Continue reading

06.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1980 - 40 years ago exactly - beloved UK musical chameleon David Bowie released his 14th studio album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), known usually as just Scary Monsters. It was his first release since his famed late-70s Berlin trilogy, which - while now recognised as an important period in Bowies career - had at the time been poorly received and not fared well commercially, so its fair to say his career was in somewhat of a lull. To counter this Bow...ie holed up in a New York studio with producer Tony Visconti to construct a batch of songs which were commercially viable without sacrificing the experimental edge that hed been favouring in recent times. The results were dense but accessible and the plan worked perfectly, lead single Ashes To Ashes - helped by its groundbreaking film clip - catapulting the singer back into the public consciousness, and hitting #1 in his homeland (as well as #3 in Australia and #21 in the US). Next single Fashion (also arriving with a memorable film clip) was also a hit (#5 UK, #27 Aus, #71 US), and these tracks in particular helped Scary Monsters become a smash hit as well, racing to the top of the charts in the UK and Australia as well as rising to #12 in America (a decent result for Bowie in that market at the time). Reviews were for the most part gushing, with Record Mirror giving it a rating of seven stars out of five, Melody Maker calling it "an eerily impressive stride into the 80s" and Billboard offering that it "should be the most accessible and commercially successful Bowie LP in years". Its become widely regarded by critics and fans as "the last great Bowie album" - with many of his subsequent releases held up against it - and its been acknowledged as important in other ways too, with Q magazine ranking Scary Monsters at #30 in its 2000 list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever, Pitchfork Media in 2002 placing it #93 in its Top 100 Albums of the 1980s, and Slant Magazine listing the album at #27 on its 2012 list of Best Albums of the 1980s and saying "Bowie bridles the experimentation of his Berlin trilogy and channels those synth flourishes and off-kilter guitar licks into one of the decades quirkiest pop albums." 01.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1995 - 25 years ago exactly - the first issue of quarterly American roots music magazine No Depression hit the stands. The brainchild of co-editors/co-founders Grant Alden and Peter Blackstock, the magazine took its name from the online discussion group NoDepression.AltCountry which had prompted its formation - that name itself tracing back to both the Carter Family song No Depression in Heaven the 1990 album No Depression by alt-country pioneers Uncle Tup...elo - and indeed it was the burgeoning alt-country genre which provided the magazines initial focus, with early cover stars including Son Volt, Steve Earle, Wilco, Whiskeytown, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch. It provided informed, long-form journalism and criticism for a movement with a growing fanbase - a forum which had been sorely missing at the time - and gained immediate traction in the roots world, helped by a strong early distribution deal with Tower Records: at its height No Depression had a subscriber base of 15,000 readers and printed 40,000 copies of each issue. Sadly as the internet began to affect both print media and record stores the magazine became vulnerable and printed the last issue of its first print run in 2008, transforming into a vibrant online community until 2015 when it was purchased by new owners and reverted to its former glory. Today it is once more a quarterly print publication of great scope and focus dealing lovingly with the oft-neglected Americana genre and associated roots fields - happy 25th birthday No Depression! #15september1995 #25years #nodrpesssionmagazine #uncletupelo #thecarterfamily #altcountry #americana #rootsmusic #nichepublication #excellentmagazine #longliveprint #happybirthday #sonicsherpa See more

01.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 1995 - 25 years ago exactly - US rapper Tupac Shakur was released from prison after Death Row Records boss Suge Knight posted a $1.4 million bond to release him. Tupac had been imprisoned at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New Yor for sexually assaulting a woman in his New York hotel room two years previously and had already served eight months of his ten month sentence when approached by label impresario Knight to join his growing stable of rappers.... Tupac - whose massive stardom had caused a lot of undue attention from other inmates during his incarceration (his third solo album 'Me Against The World' debuted at #1 while he was incarcerated), so when Death Row offered him a three-album, $3.5 million deal with one of the conditions being that they would get him out of prison he jumped at the chance. Upon release he was immediately whisked away to LA where after a brief bout of celebratory partying he dived straight into work on his next statement 'All Eyez On Me', the double album which would drop in 1996 and go to #1 in the US, but which would sadly prove his final studio album as the singer was tragically murdered in Las Vegas later that same year. #12october1995 #25years #tupacshakur #clintoncorrectionfacility #dannemoranewyork #releasedonbail #deathrowrecords #sugeknight #allayesonme #90srapwars #sonicsherpa See more

01.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in 2000 - 20 years ago exactly - former Eagle Don Henley was sued by a fan in Little Rock, Arkansas who claimed that she was hit in the head by a flying maraca during Henley's concert the previous week. Henley had been in town supporting his 'Inside Job' solo album when fan Mary Ann Haley stepped up to take a photo of the singer, who responded by hurling a maraca at her - hitting her directly in the forehead - and then gesturing wildly that there was to be no more... flash photography. The lawsuit asked for unspecified damages, claiming that the incident caused Haley to suffer "highly unpleasant mental reactions, including fright, horror, disappointment, chagrin, worry, disgrace, embarrassment, indignity, ridicule, grief, shame, humiliation, anger, and outrage." There's no record of what transpired with the claim (it was either quietly dropped or quietly settled), but it is on record that when Haley sent the lawsuit to Pulaski County Prosecutor Larry Jegley - hoping for criminal action rather than civil - he responded that he wasn't likely to pursue the case, telling the AP, "That's not the silliest thing I've heard this year, but it's definitely in the top 10." #14october2000 #20years #donhenley #assaultwithasexyweapon #flyingmaracas #takeiteasy #notchagrin #ihatethefuckingeaglesman #sonicsherpa See more
