25.01.2022 CASE: This poor boy was diagnosed with right sided heart failure, seen ultrasonographically as severe pericardial and abdominal effusion. The pericardial effusion was great enough to cause cardiac tamponade.Cardiac tamponade is a clinical syndrome caused by the excess accumulation of fluid in the pericardial space, resulting in reduced ventricular filling and subsequent haemodynamic compromise. Radiographically it presents as a globoid cardiac silhouette however can o...nly be definitively diagnosed ultrasonographically. Once diagnosed on echocardiogram an emergency ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis is required to relieve the fluid and pressure. . So what causes cardiac tamponade? Possible differentials include: cardiac tumours (primary or metastatic), congenital diseases such as percardial cyst and peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia(PPDH), right sided heart failure, left atrial rupture, trauma, pericarditis, coagulopathy or idiopathic. Most of these require an echocardiogram to definitively identify. . If you see radiographic changes to the cardiac silhouette, book an appointment (www.sonovetaus.com) with us so we can help you rule in/out causes which will then guide you to better manage your cases! . 24.01.2022 What is an abdominal ultrasound? To know when to request for an abdominal ultrasound, one must understand the capabilities of it. Abdominal ultrasound is an imaging modality which is invaluable and non-invasive used to visualise all the internal organs within the abdominal cavity. Unlike other diagnostic imaging modalities it does not use radiation, instead sound wavesof varying frequencies is used to create an image of the internal organs.... It works synergisticallywith abdominal radiographs and other diagnostics teststo allow us to examine individual organs, pinpointing lesions (large or subtle) which will then directa clinicians next stepin work up or treatment. When an abdominal ultrasound is performed it is vital to examine all organs completely. In veterinary medicineclinical signs are not often specific to one organ, thus at SonoVet single organ examinations are notperformed as they do not provide a global viewof the whole abdomen. . Should you have anyquestions regarding the ultrasound service please feel free to contact us via email [email protected] or via whatsapp +61(0)480 232 003 . . . #sonovetadelaide #mobileveterinaryultrasound #ultrasound #abdominalultrasound #echocardiogram #veterinary #veterinaryultrasound See more

20.01.2022 : We recently diagnosed a great dane with () . From our cardiac 2D, M Mode, Doppler (colour, CW, PW), and various measurements we were able to conclude thatthe poor boy had dilatation of its left and right heart chambers with normal wall thickness which resulted in severe mitral valve regurgitation, mild tricuspid regurgitation, diastolic dysfunction, and increased left atrial pressures. During the scan there was also evidence ofpericar...dial effusion, pleural effusion and abdominal effusion which indicated to us that he was in heart failure. The ultrasound ECG detected an irregularly irregular arrhythmia with occasional VPCs and atrial fibrillation. . This cardiac disease is unfortunately not uncommon in our giant breed canines, .. 2012 reports that the 35.6% ; although little is known about the underlyinggenetic mutations that lead to the disease and progression from sub-clinical to clinical stages. . 19.01.2022 What cases should you be considering? As veterinary medicine is progressing globally, we now have greater understanding from ongoing research and development of technology on how to better diagnose and manage clinical cases. What does this mean? It means that of having a stab in the dark with a "trial and error" approach, we now have greater ability to work up cases before instigating the appropriatemedical orsurgical therapy that is required to treat our ...patients. There are a whole range of cases that would warrant an abdominal ultrasound. Here are a few examples: Elevated hepatobiliary parameters Acute/chronic gastrointestinal cases Palpable abdominal mass/organ enlargement Suspected FB obstruction Acute and chronic renal/urogenital cases Radiographic evidence of organomegaly, organ displacement or radiographic lesions all of which require further diagnostic imaging work up. . 14.01.2022 CASE: An abdominal ultrasound was requested for this geriatric DLH. Immediately on placement of the ultrasound probe a severe abdominal effusionwas noted. A therapeutic abdominocentesis procedurewas performed and 1.5L of chylous fluid was drained. In the above clipyou will see the abdominal effusion as the black spacesbetween the abdominal organs, the needleplaced within the abdomen during the procedure, and the dramatic difference the cenetesis made for the pati...ent. . 12.01.2022 How does an abdominal ultrasound with SonoVet benefit your clinic and patients? As mentioned in our previous post, comprehensive organ to organ examination is important. But what else is there to abdominal ultrasounding that makes SonoVets service unique and valuable to your clinic? Lesions can have subtle sonographic changes which can only be detected if entire organs are examined with an ultrasound machine that has the high end capabilities required to accurately a...ssess organs. Having a good quality machine isnt the bees knees of any diagnostic imaging work up. To know how to systematically scan is vital, but is to be able to interpret the ultrasound images and determine its clinical significance and the pathophysiology of the disease process in the patient. There are many lesions detected that can be clinically insignificant and knowing which ones are the underlying reason for the presenting clinical signs is crucial. Not all large lesions are neoplastic and not all small lesions are benign or clinically insignificant. . 11.01.2022 This cute little flash back of bloodthrough the pulmonary valve is called a "pulmonary insufficiency". Trivial to mild pulmonary regurgitations are commonly found in normal animals and bears no clinical significance. . When there are other echocardiogram findings plus a pulmonary regurgitation with high diastolic pulmonary pressures, it can be of clinical concern. . 02.01.2022 Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration technique is being shown in this short clip of the left caudal liver lobe with a small round hyperechoic homogeneous nodule. The needle is the echogenic line which is seen entering the liver parenchyma into the small nodule. This liver had numerous of these nodules throughout its parenchyma. The collected samples confirmed benign nodular hyperplasia. The term "fine needle aspiration" is the process of obtaining cells primarily th...rough a fenestration action, where a fine needle is passed multiple times through the region of interest. This procedure requires good careful technique to ensure the needle is visualised through its length within the sound beam, knowledge in the type of organ being sampled, interpretation of the nodule/mass prior to considering FNA, and knowing how to appropriately prepare the collected cell sample for a pathologists interpretation. . At SonoVet we will discuss with your clinicians when it is appropriate and safe to perform ultrasound guided FNAs for your patients. .
