18.01.2022 Today is Lymphoedema Awareness Day! What is lymphoedema? I here you ask. Well, if you can imagine that the fluid flowing around your body keeping your tissue hydrated and healthy is like a stream flowing with water. If that stream becomes blocked by fallen branches or rocks then this will cause the water to build up and pool in one area. This can happen in the body too, when the lymphatic channels become blocked or damaged. This can often be the result of breast canc...er treatment, which is how I developed it. At this point there is no cure but there is a lot you can do to manage it such as compression bandaging, lymphatic drainage massage and fascial release to name a few. Its incredibly important to stay on top of lymphoedema because its self-perpetuating, what I mean by this is that if the fluid is left to pool it changes the micro-circulation physiology and causes more swelling and increased risk of infection.
